The State Board of Education on Thursday approved two adjustments to Boise State football coach Chris Petersen’s contract.
The changes passed 5-2 — with Don Soltman (Twin Lakes) and Paul Agidius (Moscow) voting against them.
Soltman didn’t provide a reason. Agidius expressed concern about escalating coaching salaries but appreciation for the impact Petersen has had on the university and the state.
The adjustments give Petersen an additional $50,000 bonus for the 2010 season and a $35,000 raise. Here are the details.
More importantly to Petersen, the State Board gave Boise State the go-ahead to spend up to $2.46 million for preliminary design work on the new football facility in the north end zone of Bronco Stadium and the Dona Larsen Park facility for track and high school football. That issue passed 5-0.
The football facility will address shortcomings in the Boise State training room, equipment room and locker room in addition to providing upgraded office and meeting space and a new weight room.
“It will be very, very exciting to watch that go up,” Petersen said of the football program’s new home, scheduled for completion in 2013. “I’m so excited to see a new training room, I just really am. These kids — not just football-wise, the whole athletic department — they deserve a first-class training facility.”
The State Board also approved a contract extension for Boise State women’s basketball coach Gordy Presnell through 2015, a four-year contract for new Idaho State football coach Mike Kramer ($135,012 per year) and a plan to replace the playing surface at Idaho State’s Holt Arena.

BYU and TCU...
BYU has not been good for awhile...I have a feeling their years may be starting...this could be an upset to TCU...and a needed bonus to BSU...
Two no votes on Coach Pete....Its always hard for us jelous Vandals to change....Congrats to Pete...
That is absolutely
hilarious!
Could they have been worried about getting their cars keyed by upset constituents?
(Sorry too funny to pass up)
Did anyone
tell these two that the raise and bonus are not paid out of state funds?
Silly
They're probably the exact same people
who constantly post that academic crapola on here without doing any research
So? What if they have no new students after Luna's done?

One reason
I bet Moscow doesnt want him(or his staff)to get raises. It makes it harder for there football to compete for coaches. Which will bring less income to there town if there team plays poorly....(any worse). There head coach gets paid as much as BSU's assistant coaches, imagine how hard it is to keep there assistant if they can get paid more at BSU and to be on a team that wins and could be a great stepping stone if you would like to go elsewhere. So in a wierd way, the more BSU coaches and staff get paid the less money Moscow brings in.
Their not THERE
Get a clue
Somebody didn't vote
There are eight members of the SBOE and only seven votes were cast. Somebody didn't vote.
Having the SBOE vote on it, to begin with is pointless. It is Bronco Boosters' money that pays Coach Pete. It should be left up to the BAA Board to decide how much Coach Pete can get - regardless of the fact that he is a state employee covered by PERSI and state employee health insurance.
Coach Pete is not a state employee like other state employees are. He is different. The vast majority of his pay comes from private donations and BSU football fans.
Idahoans need to start respecting that Coach Pete is who he is and not be so jealous all the time. He is special.
We need to start getting some schools, hospitals, libraries, and bridges named after him to get the word out about his significance to the State of Idaho economy and all Idahoans' quality of life.
VNDL
PS - Of the two 'no' votes, one is an Air Force Academy graduate and one is a Vandal attorney. Maybe Milford recused himself, as a former BAA Board Member and Bronco Stock incorporator, he might have sensed a conflict of interest brewing if he voted, and it became public record of his deep loyalty and association with the Bronco Football team and Coach Pete?
Abstention
Luna had left the meeting by that time and didn't vote.
The economy is bad right now
so Idahoans not necessarily connected with BSU or fans of the Bronco or CFB or any sports, are a little resentful of others making more money than they do. That is human nature.
Also, fueling the fires is the possibility of a growing public perception that Bronco Bob may be in bed, too much, these days, with the SBOE:

Fun Story To Tell
The truth is that Boise State receives 20% of its funding from the State, and the University of Idaho receives 30%. Perhaps the University of Idaho should be renamed to Idaho State University?
Why is Paul Agidius of Moscow
so concerned about rising coaching salaries? Asking the SBOE to approve a raise for Coach Petersen is like asking a neighborhood homeowners association 100 miles away from yours for permission to paint your fence. And then having 2 members of said association deny your request.
Sounds....
logical to me...
Both looked silly
The two members of the SBOE who voted against Coach Pete's raise, both appear to be very small thinkers and cast their votes for petty reasons.
I believe both are Otter appointees, which kind of mystifies me even further, as Butch is no friend of the Vandals is a Blorange Bloviate.
Just stupid not to have voted for Coach Pete's pay raise and got right on to other business.

agidius is a hometown

Just heard from a guy

Last post was censored. You can't use the words "Vandal" and "sorry" in the same sentence around here. It offends sensitivities.
Yes you can - I tried it - it works

2.6 million for design work....???
jimdrgnfly come on.... this must be U of I architects screwing BSU...
$2.46 mill for Pre-Design Work
The UI architects wanted to design a Kibbie Dome of the south. BSU officils turned them down and now their pessed.
My Lord - just let them hang free and breath
No wonder the officils are pessed - your pants are too tight.

design fees of 2.4 +million
This is bordering on larceny, or ol boy U. Of Idaho collusion. With cad cam and a history of computerized stadium design... The 2.4 million is multiples above normal cost... Open bid process? not likely...only u of i architects chosen?
no wonder the idaho board voted 100 % to feather their own alumni nests... If BSU has an architecture school, wouldn't it have been priced competitively...?
Agree with most folks here.
Petty stuff.
I don't get the 'nay' the votes. Seems like one of those things that, over time, begins to wash out goodwill and clout with fellow members in the SBOE. If Pete's salary is privately funded, the BAA should have the final say.
Happy Thursday.

Just sent him an e-mail
Told him the only way he will make this happen is to buy ESPN/ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, the Big 10 network, the new Longhorn network, and all the soon-to-be conference networks.
Otherwise his little LLC is nothing but a tax write-off.
I agree that it probably won't work
But at least he's trying. Nobody else has put this much effort into changing the system. Everyone else is all talk and no action, just hoping that congress will do something about it.
rockmysocks - a couple questions for you.
Not trying to be arguementative; but, could you explain your logic as to why you are advocating doing away with the current BCS system; and, tell us what you would replace it with.
Also, could you tell us how BSU would benefit from the change?
Thank you in advance.
VNDL
Rocky
I'm not sure he's done all that much. He created an LLC (for his own benefit I might add) at the cost of $100 and added a person to his already immense staff. Kustra has probably done more to effect the system at this point. Just the fact that he has "pondered the idea of having a mid-season playoff lead to a final championship game" shows that he has not done a whole lot of research. Does anyone really believe that Texas created a TV network so they could give up half their games to a playoff system? Or that the SEC will roll over and cut it's new 15 year $3B TV contract in half? Or that the Big 10 Network will cut it's projected $2.8B revenue (including a new $6M deal for a Big 10 championship game), just so Mark can have his playoff?
Here's a couple of numbers to ponder......
March Madness gets around $786M in TV money each year to share with 345 teams
The Big 6 +ND gets around $800M in TV money each year to share with 64 teams (please note this does NOT include BCS bowl money).
Which one of these two would rather belong to?
Want a playoff? Stop watching college football before December, and when these TV contracts run out in 15 years, we will have a playoff.
I shouldn't of had that third cup of coffee..........
tfunk....
a bit biased reporting...For one thing, funding college basketball is much cheaper than funding College football...So the final 64 makes more money than the 35 game bowl system...The tv ratings are also higher...We will never see a 16-team playoff in college football...That would mean an additional 4 games for the NC....People need to quit trying....What we may see is an 8-team playoff system because that would not affect the BCS status quo as much....You would have 5 BCS divisional winners + 1 wildcard BCS team and then the two best non-AQ teams to make the 8-team playoff cut....
Again you miss the point
I'll let VNDL handle it.
Fugly - You are trying too hard . . .
. . . to understand it. Your brain is in overdrive.
Stop and slow down a little bit.
It is a simple concept. It is called HUGE MONEY guaranteed every football season to all the AQ teams, regardless if they play in any BCS Bowls or not.
This is why BSU is improving academics - to get an invite to an AQ conference - so BSU can get their fingers stickey in the BIG MONEY PIE.
It took me a while to understand this, as I was overthinking it too.
It is SO SIMPLE it becomes confusing.
Get a copy of 'Death To The BCS' and read it closely. Then after reading it, stop and think about what you have read. You will think the book is great at first and then it will sink in that all these big AQ schools cannot all be as off based as the book portends. Yes, they are somewhat corrupt, but so what - all schools are to some extent - even BSU. Their schools are making BIG MONEY by being in AQ conferences. All non-AQers are chasing a ghost.
Now throw in the fact of all the sweatheart TV deals and the new trend for AQ conferences to get their own TV lashups going - for even BIGGER MONEY.
And you will come to the conclusion - if you look at it from a business viewpoint - that the current BCS system is the 'cat's meow' for AQ schools to make BIG MONEY. They are gonna fight toth and nail to keep the current BCS system.
Who cares about the non-AQ schools and conferences. They don't really factor into anything. They get thrown a bone once in a while to hush them up a bit. And that is okay - as it is considered an 'Expense Of Doing Business' (kinda like overhead expenses, such as heat and electricity for a hamburger stand).
I fought the good fight in my mind, long and hard, but it was tfunky that took me through it the other night and it finally hit me between the eyes (I can be a hardheaded Vandal sometimes).
A 16 team playoff concept would be the end of the BIG MONEY dreams of BSU someday getting into an AQ conference and sharing the annual Bonanza.
VNDL
PS - Mark's playoff goals aren't going anywhere. The BCS mountain of gold is too big and high to climb.
Well said VNDL
Maybe, once more people understand that the BCS bowl money is only the diversion to the card trick and not the actual real trick, somethings can change........
VNDL...
Well lets use College as an example then...what you are saying is that the fratenities of the AQs will not let, or invite, the dormies of the non-AQs to their fraternity's party...If the frat invites a dormie, then the dormie must enter thru the back door so that all of the fraternities do not see this as a weakness enpart of the fratenity system...
If you are a dormie and you want to come to the frat party, then you must abide by frat rules and the frat system....or else...adios....
Fugly - Kinda
As a frat rat, I would never actually invite a dormie (GDI) to my house for a party, unless he had something to offer me in return - equal to or greater than my status on campus and/or ego enhancement. The GDI must be cool, be popular, wear current trendy clothes, drive a nice car, his family have money (large endowement), and be smart and get good grades (good academic program). I would kinda interview him first and, if he fit my criterion, then I would invite him for a house visit.
Once I have decided to invite a GDI to my house, he comse in through the front dooor and all my brothers would be very gracious to him, as he would then be welcome. After a few visits, if he has anything to offer that can benefit us, in the long run, we would have a secret vote to offer him membership or not. The vote must be unanimous. One black ball and he's gone, back to GDI Land.
Of course the GDI would have to abide by our rules and our system or else, adios.
VNDL
PS - The only ones that have to come in through the back door, would be the Buffarillas we picked up somewhere, right before closing, in dire times of need, when our GFs were out of town.
VNDl answered it...
The AQ v non-AQ system is much like a frat v dormie...The frat sets the rules and the rules are abided by the frat system...No wonder us dormies are rooting for BSU....they are one of us!
Fugly
Yes, the dormies are rooting for BSU. Cuz they can't see the Big Picture. They just focus on the small stuff - like going to BCS bowls and competing for a NC. They are not focussing on the future academic growth of BSU or understanding how to get there.
What the dormies don't realize is that Bronco Bob, Gene BlahBlah, and Coach Pete are Frat Boys from other schools and want BSU to get into the frat world and move the hel! out of the dorms.
It is going over the heads of most of the members of Bronco Nation like a 747 cruising at 40,000 feet. All that is visible is a contrail high in the sky. The maroon Broncos look at it and wonder what the heck it is; as Coach Pete sits at the controls of the airplane and Bronco Bob acts as the stewardess.
VNDL
Classic Analogy...
of Pete as Pilot and Bronco Bob as stewardess....Coach Pete may be the next Pterno if BSU can be another Penn State in academics....
In the famous words of B.H. Obama, "I do believe.......
uh, at uh, some point, you have uh, made enough money." Perhaps Coach Pete should "spread the wealth around." Oh wait - he does. Thanks for your wisdom Mr. Adidius - nice to know our children's educational needs are in such good hands.
If True Blue Broncos really understood, they would . . .
. . . certainly not want a 16 team playoff to replace the current BCS system.
A 16 team playoff would be the death of the Bronco Football Program as we know it. It would also, spell the end for any legitimate reason to improve the academics at BSU as a method to gain an invite to an AQ conference, as AQ/non-AQ conferences would go away, so no BIG MONEY advantage for BSU to improve academics.
Only maroons and shallow thinkers favor doing away with the current BCS system and replacing it with a 16 team playoff.
Any thoughts from you True Blue Bronco maroons and/or shallow thinkers?
VNDL
PS - This post is intended to stir up good sound debate and controversy regarding the merits; PRO and CON, of whether or not a 16 team playoff concept would benefit BSU more than the current BCS system.
No debate VNDL....
A 16 team playoff system will never happen and it won't work anyway...it would be too many games for the NC....
BSU has done their strategy correctly...By moving to MWC and playing 2-3 BCS teams, it put them in position, if go undefeated, as the top non-AQ team and in top 12 and in a BCS bowl....possibly someday a nactional championship game....
If BSU goes to BCS conference, it will be a big mistake...their hand of poker is best played by being the best non-AQ going into the BCS bowl system...
Utah has made a very big mistake...before, that had decent bowl appearances...now in Pac-12, they will be lucky to average 7-5 records and have onlymediocre bowl games if lucky....BSU does not want to go that route....being the underdogged non-AQ fits them perfectly...
Fugly - No / Tfunky
You were doing a great job until you said, "If BSU goes to BCS conference, it will be a big mistake...their hand of poker is best played by being the best non-AQ going into the BCS bowl system..."
It is simply, NOT about BSU going to BCS games and vying for a NC shot.
This is what is tripping up many many many people. I know it did me. And, yes it is incongruous to what a typical maroon and unwashed Bronco Fan would want for their beloved Broncos.
What it is really about is BSU getting into an AQ conference and sharing in the guaranteed seasonal Bonanza of Big Bucks that AQ teams share in.
It is not about going to BCS bowl games.
BSU has to improve academics to get into an AQ conference.
Membership in an AQ conference is BSU's ticket to Big Money FROM the regular season slice of the pie - not the post season BCS bowl games.
That is what tfunky is alluding to. I finally got it the other night.
VNDL
PS - Tfunky - did I get it right this time?
You've done it
Holmes!
