Heisman analyst says Boise State's Kellen Moore could be 'front-runner' after Monday night's game

Former USC assistant sports information director Chris Huston runs a Heisman-tracking website called HeismanPundit.com. It’s a terrific resource for those who cover the Heisman race.

Boise State junior quarterback Kellen Moore is No. 3 on Huston’s preseason poll of select Heisman voters going into Monday's opener against Virginia Tech.

I asked Huston his opinion of Moore as a candidate this year for a story that will appear in Monday’s newspaper. See his comments at the bottom of the blog.

But I also like one of the features on HeismanPundit.com — The 10 Heismandments, which supposedly will help determine whether a candidate can actually win.

Here’s a look at those 10 rules — and how I see Moore fitting them.

THE 10 HEISMANDMENTS

1. The winner must be a quarterback, a running back, or a multi-threat athlete.

Moore: Quarterback. Check.

2. Juniors and seniors have the overwhelming advantage in the Heisman race and, as a general rule, will win over an underclassman. But a sophomore from a traditional power who puts up extraordinary single-season numbers can’t be discounted.

Moore: Junior. Check.

3. The winner must put up good numbers in big games on TV.

Moore: He gets his first chance Monday night against Virginia Tech. Moore must put up solid numbers — 200-plus yards and a couple touchdown passes, perhaps — to have a legitimate shot to win the Heisman. He also faces Oregon State, Fresno State and Nevada on national TV. The Fresno State and Nevada games are part of three straight Friday night games on ESPN2 in November, which could be critical for Moore.

4. The winner must have some prior name recognition.

Moore: He finished seventh in Heisman voting last year and is a favorite of the national media. Check.

5. The winner must be one or more of the following three:

a. The top player on a national title contender.

Moore: If the Broncos go undefeated, check.

b. A player who puts up good numbers for a traditional power that has a good record.

Moore: Not sure Boise State counts as a “traditional power” yet.”

c. A player who puts up superlative single-season or career numbers on a good team, or numbers which are way out ahead of his Heisman competitors.

Moore: Too early to tell.

6. The winner cannot be considered an obvious product of his team’s system. Call this the Andre Ware rule. Basically, this means that voters are unimpressed by huge stats put up by an individual in offensive systems conducive for huge numbers.

Moore: While Boise State is known for offense, its quarterbacks rarely put up the kind of numbers Moore posted last year.

7. If you are a quarterback, running back or multi-purpose athlete at one of the following schools, you have a good chance to win if you have a very good statistical season, are an upperclassman and your team wins at least 9 games: Notre Dame, USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Ohio State, Michigan, Miami, Florida and Florida State.

Moore: Sorry, no.

8. There are statistical benchmarks for each position in order to be considered:

a. If you are a running back, you need to gain at least 2,000 yards if you are NOT on a traditional power or a national championship contender. This is a number that is slowly rising as more backs hit that mark. If you are on a traditional power or national title contender, you must gain at least 1,700 yards. In either case, you also must score at least 15 touchdowns.

b. If you are a passing quarterback on a traditional power or national title contender, you need to pass for at least 3,000 yards and must have at least a 2-1 touchdown to interception ratio, with at least 20 TD passes and an efficiency rating of at least 135.0.

c. If you are a running quarterback on a traditional power or a national title contender, you must reach the 1,000-yard mark rushing in spectacular fashion and also be a decent passer.

d. If you are a multi-threat athlete, you can only win if you produce spectacular plays on special teams, specifically kick and punt returns.

Moore: He blew away those quarterback numbers last year.

9. There will never be another two-time Heisman winner.

Moore: This helps him. The only player with more points in Heisman voting last year who returns is Alabama’s Mark Ingram, who won last year.

10. The winner must be likeable.

Moore: The humble small-town hero. What’s not to like?

Here’s what Huston e-mailed me about Moore’s chances:

“The key to Moore's Heisman hopes:

“1. Play well in wins over Va. Tech and Oregon State, as well as the trio of Friday games later in the season.

“2. Lead Boise to undefeated season.

“3. Produce numbers similar in scope to last year's. Doesn’t need to be 39-3, but 35 and 5 would work fine.

“4. Hope that Boise is the only undefeated team OR that no other player on an undefeated or once-defeated traditional power has a slam-dunk Heisman-type season.

“Moore's Heisman hopes mirror Boise State's national title hopes. They will probably rise or fall together and feed off each other.

“It’s all about establishing legitimacy by beating the top-level teams.

“In Moore’s favor is a 26-1 record heading into the year, decent (but not awesome) name recognition, excellent stats and the association with a program that people love to talk about, that is looking to overturn the BCS establishment. His smaller stature just plays up his underdog chances even more and might help him in the race.

“I predict that if he plays lights out and Boise beats Va. Tech, he'll vault into front-runner status.”

Turn out the lights..

The Party's Over..(Willie Nelson).Go Moore and Go BSU!

11:58.....11:59.....

11:58.....11:59.....

Hey joc

didn't you post the exact same thing last year?

Did Kellen Moore win the

Did Kellen Moore win the Heisman last year?
Did BSU win a national championship last year?

Answers......NO

And if you read the criteria listed in the article, common sense would dictate that it's RARE sophomores win it...You can't read? Comprehend? What?

As for BSU,,no Nat Title..Did Ohio State? Did Oregon? Did Texas? Did Florida? Nice company to be in, wouldn't you say? (Hint: they were all BCS Teams too)

Nope and nope

but I'm pretty sure the clock didn't quite strike 12 either (at least in the traditional sense)

Because, if it did, and it means another 14-0 season and BCS bowl win.....go right ahead and strike 12

If you haven't heard this

It's pretty cool

joc, do not listen, your head will explode!

joke doc

is a little beeawtch. if we win monday night, he will disappear until the wyoming game.

How true...

We will never shake these a clowns. The Broncos finish 14-0 and only the second team to do so ever, and jocdoc still talks garbage. Let me put it straight for all the losers. The clock has already struck midnight for the Broncos. That was the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. They are beyond midnight. Losing a game against Virginia Tech in their backyard will not ruin the Broncos or Bronco Nation. Perspective haters. The surface of this program and its fans has only scratched the surface. The Broncos have reached Big Time College Football. Cripe and Murphy may try to protect their image by catering to the haters by not listing the Broncos among the "elite" but we have arrived. News media and coverage has never been higher. Respect has been earned and no matter the outcome tomorrow the Broncos future is very bright.

Bronco Nation Bloggers

The best thing to do is to ignore the trolls that feed on the Idaho Stateman comment boards. Keep the posts directly pertaining to the articles and don't get baited into posting about other posters. That just clutters the board and destroys the real value of the comments sections.

Kellen is clearly a legitimate candidate for the Heisman Trophy this season. Good luck to him and the rest of the team. You've really done amazing things with the program and the Broncos are getting the recognition they deserve from years of hard work. Go Blue!!!

badams is wise

badams sez, en parte: "The best thing to do is to ignore . . . the Idaho Stateman comment boards . . . the posts directly pertaining to the articles . . . just clutters the board and destroys the real value of the comments sections . . ."

Probably, very sound advice.

Thanx

VNDL

Agreed VNDL....

It's been off/preseason entertainment...But the season has started and it's time to talk some football!

Now...where's that lil quitter sissy Bronco Kid??

Where was it ...

... that Kid announced his exit? Do you remember?

Razor...

Click on Murphs...and view recent comments

Found it ...

... and read through that long series of exchanges. Interesting, to say the least. You don't normally see people exit (or threaten to exit) in such a manner. Then again, when a person usually takes contrarian or argumentative stances, he should expect confrontation. It's not that everybody needs to be harmonious. However, if one is viewed as disrespectful and looking for fights, one or more will be found.

Are you suggesting that Kid sign on as a fan of New Mexico? They're still nearing the California border on their walk home.

Can I Play Fullback??

I'd rather run over him than fly past......just sayin...

I think ...

... you did run over him.

Wis: You asked me a question last week about what I thought about the Vandal O-Line - and - I said I would have to hold an opinion until after they played their first game, and get back with you. I have seen their first game, now.

The Vandal O-Line did not live up to their preseason billing, in my opinion. They played poorly in the first half, giving up 4 sacks in the first two quarters- TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.

Pass protection sucked. They were not firing off the line with dominance. Too many bonehead benalties from holding. They looked very fast and athletic, but their blocking assignments were not carried out. They were not holding their blocks and finishing them. It was almost like they were confused as to who they were supposed to block.

Apparently, Coach Akey ripped their collective butts at halftime, cuz the second half they played very well - living up to the preseason hype. A tale of two different halves.

The Vandal O-line cannot have a repeat of that desultory first half performance at Nebraska, or it will be over before the start of the second quarter.

In addition, the Vandal RBs were not effectively blocking in the backfield, giving Enderle time in the pocket - there wasn't much of a pocket in the first half, really. It's was not like they weren't trying - more like there was mass confusion regarding blocking assignments and who was supposed to do what. It got fixed by second half, though.

I would give the Vandal O-line an F grade for the first half and a C+ for the second half. They are capable of an A+, in my opinion - athletic ability, quick feet, good lateral movement skills, huge size, looked to be in great shape aerobicallly. They would be scary good if they could get it together. I am not 100% convinced they can before Nebraska.

They are gonna need to improve real fast before Nebraska, or it will get real ugly real fast.

The Vandal D was outstanding, though.

Go Vandals

VNDL

I didn't get to see it...

although a gametrax led me to those conclusions. It seems the O-Lines are always, IMO, the last segment of a team to come around. Yes, fixin er in a week might be tough..Next you'll see missed assignments as they will be eager to more decisive..it's typical. If the skills are there, the disciplines will come...it's frustrating, tho, as to when.

Thanks for the report VNDL...I'd recommend Joe V make a locker room appearance in Lincoln for a pep talk!!

Headed up tp Bogus for "burger day"....walk the dog, run the dog, preview an area we have an upcoming work day in a couple weeks, and get my pre ski season fix!

Man

I love when fall comes and you know that you are going to ski real soon. started with a jump rope the other day just getting the legs ready.

Kid was funny, did he really just take a summers worth of beatings only to exit before the first game of the year.....
Hundreds of days where all we talk about is NOTHING and now football is here and kid takes his ball and goes home?
Kinda like going through all the hazing and then quitting the team. wierd, but typical kid remember he is a lone wolf, a man fighting THE man, he is not a yes man but an unconventional pioneer.

Fun to Talk About, but

It's always fun to talk about, speculate about and generally BS about sports in the pre-season.
Unfortunately, the games must still be played.
Better to wait until about game eight to book your trip to New York for the Heisman ceremony or to the BCS championship game.
The sports world will be more interested after Monday's game.

A pretty good read

BSU should have Keiser lead them out of the tunnel sometime this year.

Yeah tfunk...

the U/I game. What an interesting read. Thanks...Looks like the Vandies got real butt hurt over his proposal. Good ole boy club in it's finest hour...

An excellent story

Agree in having Keiser, with sledgehammer in hand, lead the team onto the field.
