Idaho GOP: Minnick could become the Hill's 'least powerful congressman'

Idaho Republicans are looking to make hay from a prominent pundit's forecast that the GOP will reclaim the House.

If Republicans take control of the House, 1st District Democrat Walt Minnick would become "the least powerful congressman on Capitol Hill," Idaho GOP victory director Phil Hardy said in a statement today.

Republican challenger Raul Labrador, meanwhile, would be a prominent newcomer in a GOP House, says Hardy. "He would be one of the few Republican Hispanics in Congress outside of Florida, in a party desperately seeking to attract Hispanic voters. His occupation and ethnicity makes him an ideal spokesman for the party on one of the hottest issues in America — immigration."

The Idaho GOP statement was a response to 2010 election predictions from Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia. Sabato says the GOP could pick up 47 House seats in November, enough to recapture the House.

By the way, Sabato lists the Minnick-Labrador race as a tossup.

From the Idaho GOP statement:

"(Sabato's) prediction is huge. Sabato is widely heralded as the best electoral prognosticator in the country and is usually very cautious. You can take his prediction to the bank.

What does this mean to us if Republicans take control?

If re-elected Walt Minnick will be the least powerful congressman on Capitol Hill. He would be in the minority party and majority Republicans would have no use for him. He would not be needed by Democrat leadership to make a majority. As a so-called "Blue Dog" his politics are not in the Democrat mainstream and will be an annoyance to the liberal president and the liberal Democratic leadership. He would be a fringe backbencher that no one would listen to or work with. This half of Idaho would be virtually unrepresented.

Compare that to Raul Labrador in the majority party. He would be one of the few Republican Hispanics in Congress outside of Florida, in a party desperately seeking to attract Hispanic voters. His occupation and ethnicity makes him an ideal spokesman for the party on one of the hottest issues in America — immigration. He would be a conservative in a much more conservative Republican caucus. In a large freshman class (like 1994) there will be significant opportunities for leadership and committee seats. After the 1994 sweep, freshmen were even given coveted spots on Rules and Appropriations committees. Idaho would be powerfully represented.

The fiscally conservative wing of the party would be able to make good its promises on spending. There is no reason to believe someone like Raul Labrador won’t be the same voice in D.C. that he was in Boise — no more taxes, cut spending. No compromises on principles Idahoans value.

Those interests that support Minnick merely to have a friend in the majority will cut and run in September when or if it became obvious that Republicans would take control. It's now obvious.

Ludicrous

The White House takes Minnick's calls. Walt can accomplish much more for Idaho than sending a fleet of Republicans sitting on the back benches throwing flames and accomplishing nothing.

"The White House takes Minnick's calls."

And that's a good thing?

HAHAHAHA!!!! Now that's just funny

I don't care who you are, LOL

Like the White House is going to take any advice from a "Blue Dawg" in the first place!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Minnick has no place to go, he is ineffective as a Blue Dawg and will be even more so in the minority. Surprised it's taken the GOP all this time to figure that out.
