(UPDATE, noon Thursday. KBOI reports receiving 956 votes, and the percentages have changed: 48 percent say Obama is a foreign-born Muslim; 2 percent say he's a foreign-born Christian; 7 percent call him an American-born Muslim; 23 percent says he's an American-born Christian; and 19 percent say he's a president with big ears.)
Original post from Tuesday afternoon:
Sixty percent of listeners who responded to an online survey by the Boise radio station say President Barack Obama is a Muslim, more than twice the figure in a recent national poll.
Fifty-five percent of respondents to the non-scientific poll said Obama is a foreign-born Muslim and 5 percent said he is a native-born Muslim. Another 5 percent said Obama was Christian, but foreign born.
KBOI host Nate Shelman said Tuesday afternoon that 716 respondents replied to the online poll Monday afternoon and night and before 1 p.m. Tuesday. During Monday's show, Shelman discussed a Newsweek poll that found 24 percent of respondents said Obama was a Muslim/Follower of Islam.
Obama has repeatedly said he is a Christian.
Newsweek's Aug. 25-26 poll did not ask what voters thought about Obama's birthplace. State records and contemporaneous newspaper reports show he was born in Hawaii and efforts to challenge his right to run for and serve as president as a non-native have been rejected by federal courts.
Shelman spent his three-hour show focused on the issue of religion and birthplace and chose "birthers" as the code word for Monday's KBOI rewards program.
Shelman summarized what his listeners had to say on the topic:
"The callers relayed their views on President Obama as a foreign-born Muslim. Most of them justified their views on Obama being foreign as a 'gut-feeling,' some used the web or e-mails as part of their support. Some just want the document available for review from the public.
"As for viewing the President as a Muslim, anti-Muslim feelings are running high with the Ground Zero mosque. People's feelings are hurt by the President's apparent acceptance of the mosque and feel its due to his father's religion and his up bringing as a child. Others think the president is not a true religious person, only using Christianity to gain votes in 2008."
The poll on KBOI's website asked "Do you think President Obama is:"
A foreign born Muslim -- 55 percent
A foreign born Christian -- 5 percent
An American born Muslim -- 5 percent
An American born Christian -- 17 percent
A president with really big ears -- 19 percent
Results are as of 1:30 p.m.
