Boise State is No. 3 in AP preseason poll - highest ranking in school history

The Boise State football team is No. 3 in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 — the highest ranking in any major poll in school history. The poll was released Saturday morning.

The Broncos even received a first-place vote.

Defending champion Alabama is No. 1. Ohio State is No. 2. Florida is No. 4. Texas is No. 5. Virginia Tech is No. 10.

The Broncos open the season Sept. 6 against Virginia Tech at FedExField in Landover, Md.

Boise State was No. 5 and Virginia Tech No. 6 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.

The opener is the fourth matchup of Top 10 teams in Boise State history. The Broncos lost to Louisville in the 2004 Liberty Bowl and beat Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl and TCU in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl.

Oregon State, the Broncos' opponent for the home opener, is No. 24.

This is Boise State’s fourth appearance in the AP preseason poll — and by far the Broncos’ highest ranking. They were No. 14 in 2009, No. 24 in 2007 and No. 18 in 2005. The Broncos have finished in the Top 25 in six of the past eight years, all but 2005 and 2007.

Boise State finished last year at No. 4.

Joe Giglio of The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., gave Boise State its No. 1 vote. The Broncos were ranked No. 7 or higher on every ballot. Thirteen voters put the Broncos at No. 2, 14 had them at No. 3 and 15 had them at No. 4. Here's the breakdown.

“I think they’re the best team in the country,” Giglio said. “… You have a team, a veteran group, that went 14-0 and feels they can take the next step. That’s big in my book. If you look at Alabama by comparison, they lost nine starters on defense. Alabama won a couple games on defense last year.”

Giglio also was the only voter to put West Virginia at No. 1 in the 2007 preseason poll. The Mountaineers would have played for the title but they lost to Pittsburgh in the season finale. He was one of two voters to rank Texas No. 1 in 2009 — and the Longhorns lost in the title game.

Giglio covers the Atlantic Coast Conference, home of Virginia Tech. He expects the Broncos to beat the Hokies in the opener because the Hokies are rebuilding their defense.

“Virginia Tech is the type of team you want to play in the opener and don’t want any part of in November,” Giglio said.

Tyler Hansen beat out Cody Hawkins of Bishop Kelly High for the starting quarterback job at Colorado, the Daily Camera newspaper reports. Hawkins, son of Colorado coach Dan Hawkins, started the past three season openers for the Buffaloes.

Congrats to the Bronco program!

Wonder if ESPN will use the AP rankings when they do the game or the Coaches Poll. They usually use the higher ranking but 5 and 6 are closer together and makes it look it better.

Will someone tell boss lady (jefa) that I was very positive in this post and wasnt a big meanie to anyone.

Who gave the Broncos a first place vote? Any ideas?

Um, it says right above...

That it was some dude in NC who gave the Broncos the first place vote.

Um dude

It wasnt on there when I first posted. It was added later.

Then you can be thankful the staff have jobs, do them.

USC should move to the WAS or Mountain West Lite

USC should play in the WAC aka Weakest Athletic Conference or The Mountain Wac Lite that way they would only have to get up for a game or two a year like the BSU azzhatz And always have a gerat season your Number two in my book and I usually flush number two when Is Coach Pete and Kellen gonna come out of the closet. Over Rated way over rated

WHY do you have Pete and Kellen in your closet?

I thought maybe you meant Portia and ELLEN but they ain't going back in your closet...

Great job Broncos

Your hard work and dedication is paying dividends now. Respect is earned and you keep earning more each season!

It will be interesting to see if BSU keeps winning, if the east coast bias will kick in and they will drop us in the polls. Let's see if the polsters are objective and let each season stand on its own, or if tradition dominates the voting.

Congratulations to all the

Congratulations to all the young men who helped earn this.

If you're reading this, I just want to say ...

I'M TELLING COACH PETE! YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE READING ANY MEDIA! Now get back to work, you have a big game to prepare for.

What's new?

Hasn't this ranking been all over the internet for a couple weeks now? Or is this just the today release of ANOTHER poll that says the exact same information?

I added a sentence to clear it up, but this came out this morning. There are only two preseason polls that matter — AP (out today) and USA Today (out two weeks ago).

Of course, the AP doesn't figure into the BCS...

...but it's one of the "official" polls

Very cool!

That's the last accolade they will get from last season. From here on out it's all about this year.

On a side note: the last three years a top 10 preseason AP pick has ended up completely out of the top 25:

2007 Louisville #10
2008 LSU #7
2009 Oklahoma #3

I so hope it's Ohio State this year..............

what will the ranking be after the third game? finally a competitive schedule my prediction after the third game no wins three losses virginia tech will defeat the wac team by at least three touchdowns remember the georgia game on the road bronco nation by the way who was the coach at the time hawkins sorry about no capitals bronco nation too lazy if the head coach can beat virginia tech give him his kudos if not a typical wac team go mark may

PLEASE don't feed the troll.

PLEASE don't feed the troll.

Hmm . . .

e e ("I hate capital letters") c..mings meets Thomas ("I love longs sentences") Wolf. Ungrammatical, but amusing. . . and dead wrong in your prediction.

Then he likely needs NERO WOLFE.

"Say a prayer for the pretender..."-Jackson Browne

The Georgia game was five years ago

and it's ridiculous that everyone keeps bringing it up. That Bronco team and this Bronco have 100% different players and the current team has tons more talent than that one did. It's kind of like the Idaho fans who still cling onto that win streak they had against us in th '80s as a way of ignoring how they haven't beat us this millennium.

Like replaying over and over

Like replaying over and over the Fiesta Bowl when BSU first won it or how IanJohnson is doing at Vikings camp.

weistard, let's put $100 on it

or does your allowance pay you enough to cover the loss?

go mark may?

who died and made him god?--he is so anti-boise and all BCS that it reeks. the viewers are east of the Mississippi river--keep them happy--lol. MARK MAY -are fighting words here--GO BRONCOS

You are a dummy.

Sorry Lilly

You are right.

It comes out of its den and rubs the lotion on its skin.

I predict we will beat VT and same as last year, VT will get better as the season progresses and everybody will forget that we beat them and teams will leap over us with one loss. Oh well, it is still fun football.

Somebody Said

Virginia Tech is slow out of the gate just as Oregon was last season. Their defense is not a proven commodity and the O line has some new guys. But we should remember that Oregon had a brand new coach. That is not the case with VT. Frank Beamer is a tried and proven guy with a tried and proven system and assistant coaches who have proven track records. They are not starting out with one engine misfiring like the Ducks did last year. They may cough and sputter a bit but they know what they are doing.

They will need to take the lead first.

VT will need a first score. For their freight train ground game to rule the tempo, they need to have the lead. They intend to help their new defense by keeping them on the bench for extended periods of clock. This will be the true key to the outcome of the game.

Very Nice

Boise State is getting its due. They have earned their ranking. And they will prove their ranking week after week.

ok bronco whatever

Every week playing

Every week playing powerhouse after powerhouse.

That is the proof the best conferences provide. Maybe we can defeat the best people as long as we have healthy people on our side. I know we have depth too but just how good our back ups are is yet to be proved. Two star guys need an extra year or two to get where many of the four star guys begin - if they ever do. I know Coach says to ignore the star thing. But they provide us something to go on. They don't have to be right in every case to have some merit. Doubts? Yes sir. I have some. But defeating a disorganized Oregon team last year only proves we were prepared before they were. Could we do it again? I don't know, could we? I guess we will know better in a couple of weeks.

I thought ENRON lost that battle and won the war...

Being Ranked High

is kind of like being voted "most popular" in high school. It really doesn't mean much. The trick is in proving popularity actually reflects ability to be successful in life. Its nice and may get better looking girls but that is about all it means.

You make it sound like better looking girls is a bad thing?! You are right, the ranking means nothing if the Broncos dont win. But its nice so many sportswriters around the country respect the Bronco program after years and years of hard work.

Its all nice but------

I'am sure coaches and the team will do just fine. Even with a loss somewhere it would be a great year for this ole BSU fan. What a run, even on a couple down years since 2000.
----go git em boys----

this could go on for a long time

article today in the sac bee on qb's mentions our latest qb recruit, "Jimmy Laughrea, Rocklin: "He has such an exceptionally quick release. He reminds me of what Dan Marino must have looked like in high school. Very talented guy, great feet, smart kid."

Please Accept My Apology...

I didn't know we had a Duck that was so sensitive. One would think, visiting a Bronco blog, that a non Bronco would have a little thicker skin. But alas..I've been wrong before...I'll be wrong again...*SIGH*
