The Boise State defense dominated much of the first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday afternoon at Bronco Stadium.
The offense only scored one touchdown and one field goal on full-field drives.
The field goal came from the third-team offense, led by true freshman quarterback Grant Hedrick. Hedrick completed his first eight passes on the drive.
The touchdown came from the first-teamers, who also had three empty drives. The group marched 75 yards for the score, including a 19-yard catch by tight end Kyle Efaw, an 18-yard run by tailback Jeremy Avery and a 12-yard TD pass from quarterback Kellen Moore to wide receiver Austin Pettis.
The first-teamers tacked on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Moore to tight end Tommy Gallarda in a red-zone session. The second-teamers scored on a 25-yard pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Joe Southwick to wide receiver Geraldo Hiwat.
All told, the offense rushed 31 times for zero yards. The rushing stats were hit hard by sacks (four for 31 yards) and a couple fumbled snaps.
Avery led the team with six carries for 26 yards. Moore was 14-of-20 for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
Kicker Kyle Brotzman was 1-for-2 on the day. He made a 40-yard field goal from the left hash and missed a 47-yarder from the middle.
Other stats: QB Joe Southwick was 5-of-10 for 73 yards and a TD, QB Mike Coughlin was 3-of-5 for 18 yards, Hedrick was 9-of-11 for 69 yards, Efaw had three catches for 53 yards and Hiwat had three catches for 48 yards and a TD.
Another note: Tailback D.J. Harper was crushed by blitzing linebacker Aaron Tevis in a play almost identical to the one on which he was injured last year at Fresno State. He took the hit fine, which should enhance his confidence in his repaired knee.
The second scrimmage is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Bronco Stadium. That one is open to the public.
Reaction:
Pettis: "A lot of mistakes, but you can expect that this early in fall camp. But a lot of effort. ... We've been going against these same guys for about 2 1/2 years so there's pretty much nothing we can throw at them that they haven't seen already."
DT Chase Baker on the run defense: "That's our emphasis. That was what we have to do. ... Pass rush comes later. Stopping the run is always our first priority."
Coach Chris Petersen: "You always hope that your defense is not going to get run over by your offense."
Petersen on Hedrick: "He throws a nice ball, he has good poise to him and he can really run."

Thanks Chad
Thanks for the update Chad.....23 days and counting!
QB of the future
I had Joe Southwick pegged as the quarterback of the future, but Grant Hedrick may be another good one. Isn't it fun to be a part of Bronco Nation? Go Blue!!!
the cupboard is full
southwick will be great when his day finally arrives. the kid they recently signed at qb(jimmy laughrea, rocklin ca)is also going to be great.
Fumbled snaps?
oh no, not again!
Byron Hout
The move of Byron Hout to linebacker is paying off. He had an interception in Friday's practice. I recall the great interception and runback against TCU in the Pointsettia Bowl. Hout is one fine athlete.
Ya, But he
Can't take a punch!
actually, i bet he could
if it was in a fight situation as opposed getting blindsided by a little pab. and you bsuniversity are a wamf.
I'm sure he could
If he was expecting one. Since he wasn't expecting it, of course he fell like a sack of potatoes. Besides, Coach Pete kept him from responding. If Pete wasn't there, who knows what kind of brawl would have resulted?
hout
byron the beast!!!! someone posted that with the move from de end that we wouldnt see much of him. really?get real dude.cant you see this guy needs to be on the field as much as possible.
