Idaho politics: A Bonner County fiesta fiasco (UPDATED, 3:35 p.m., July 13)

A clarification: In their letter to Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, Bonner County Republicans asked for Arizona license plates for display at their fair booth.

From the never-a-dull-moment political tundra of North Idaho: Seems Bonner County Republicans are waaaay too hacked off with their county fair’s “fiesta” theme.

They plan to emblazon their fair booths with signs reading “celebrate,” and Arizona state flags. Perhaps confederate flags couldn’t be procured on short notice. Local Republicans also have written a letter seeking help from Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, the emerging national voice of unreason on immigration issues.

Bronco Nation, your call to action is clear. Next time you reminisce about BSU's thrilling wins over Oklahoma and TCU, kindly refer to the game as the “Tostitos Celebrate Bowl.”

The Bonner County GOP thanks you in advance.

Now you have done it.

By injecting a mention of the Confederate Flag, you have injected the issue of race into the discourse. Of course, the Bonner GOP made the first move by such ridiculous pandering, but you will get the blame.

I'll stand by this ...

... but I explain it more fully in my column, which runs Saturday.

In my opinion, the Bonner County Republicans are judging another ethnic group solely on the basis of their differences. That’s prejudice, and it cannot be legitimized — despite the attempt to wrap it in the flag of the immigration debate.

I agree with you

but you will be the subject of much criticism for pointing out the issue of race and ethnicity.

wait til it gets out of the fishwrap...then fire

If I think of something I'll let you know but I can't stand a naked signature.

tru dat

of course there is racism (call it prejudice if you want) in North Idaho.

It is also in SW Idaho. Why do you think there it is 1A and 2C? It's also in MS, Alaska, NY, CA, and North Dakota. That's life.

Got any news to opine about?

What happened to the Saturday column?

Kevin,

I notice that your Saturday column, which was just as nasty as your blog entry, is gone from the website. Things get too hot for you or did management have enough sense to overrule you?

As of now - you have ONE comment on SATURDAY'S column.

Must have really rocked the house.

!alta! senor.

KR, your post makes it sound like the whole county is up in arms about a "fiesta".

Betsy's article (much more accurate and fair than your post) says it was a small number of the members of BCRCC that took issue with the theme.

No need trying to make it something that its not- unless you are trying to get job with The Enquirer.

Perhaps your bias of Idaho republicans is "coloring" your writing too much-- propaganda.

small number? Perhaps, but they will still change the theme

of their booth for ALL GOP followers, will they not? It's not the whole county...but it is the Bonner County GOP. If the others are not in agreement with this small group, then they might want to find a way to take their party back.

Hmmmm

Let's see here. The Bonner County Republican Central Committee sends a letter to Gov. Brewer supporting her radical and unconstitutional immigration law and protesting their fair's use of the word "fiesta" in the theme cause its not English. Yet Republicans swear they aren't engaging in racial profiling. Worse are the people who see nothing wrong with this thinking this is much ado about nothing. Clearly not Hispanic people.

Blue state blues.

I don't know where Bonner county is but I've been to northern Idaho. Some sweet cowgirl whistled at me when I drove buy in my rented dodge. Damn, but that was 20 years ago.

Weiner isn't English either...hot dog.

GOP stands for

Going Out Party

They are in danger of losing the three hispanics who vote for them.

Depends on who they go out with, but you knew that.

The word on the street is.......

some of those Repubs actually displayed the American flag on the 4th of July! I don't know how this disgusting behavior escaped the Statesman - I'll check it out with the Spokane Spokesperson Review and get back to you.

The russians want them to BLEND IN.
