Idaho elections: Puerto Rico becomes an issue in the 1st Congressional District race (w/VIDEO)

This interplay between Republican congressional candidates Vaughn Ward and Raul Labrador has made the rounds on social media, so I've embedded the video below.

At issue is the question of whether Puerto Rico should become a state. Labrador and Ward fundamentally agree that the timing isn't right. But it's still a tense little exchange. Ward incorrectly and repeatedly calls Puerto Rico a country — drawing a pointed rebuke from Labrador, a native of the U.S. territory.

And because of the Ward misstatement, this video is getting some run on social media.

I don't have much to add. But I guess this is a metaphor for this congressional campaign, five days before the primary. There's no disagreement between the candidates on the issue at hand. The issue becomes attention to detail — from a candidate who has had more than his share of attention-to-detail issues.

third world

Labrador says, "Puerto Rico is a great place to live"
****
Yeah if you like poverty.
They can't even keep the lights on there. If it wasn't for the US military financial support, PR would sink.

Ward's faux pas just means he is like everyone else. Most people don't know PR is a territory just as most people don't know some of our "states" are commonwealths. In fact, Puerto Rico is a commonwealth, AND a US territory. Expect a 5th grader to understand that???

third world?

Puerto Rico is not as poor as you think. I went on vacation there last summer with my wife and things there are pretty expensinve plus it's a beautiful island. So lets try to keep this thread clean and free from prejudice and racial comments like the one you just made.

On another note, Puerto Ricans have had United States citizenship since 1902 after the Jones Act passed. So if anyone is going to say anything about citizenship, try and double check your facts. Puerto Rico is a commonwealth, only because we invaded in 1898 when they were just negotiating their independece from Spain. Now we don't even know what(COMMONWEALTH)even means, when we were the ones who legally bound them to us. Commonwealth= modern day colony, and we can't even give them the opportunity to have a federally sanctioned self-determination process... It's sad that our politicians are so inept and incapable of understading and issue as important as this one. All ignorants should be banned from giving their opinions, ANYWHERE.

He was a Buffalo Candidate, napkin missed some pasta!

AYE YAY YAY!

Proud BSU Grad

Ward is displaying his ignorance and lack of education here.

Don't blame BSU for his ignorance...or his apparent distain for

knowledge. His isn't a problem of education. We all learned about Puerto Rico in gradeschool. His is a problem of not caring or wanting to know.

Ward can

probably see Russia also, from his front porch in Eagle.

The emperor has no clothes

And GI Joe has no uniform. There's some spirited defense of Ward labeling Puerto Rico a country and in many ways it is. But Ward screwed it up when he starts channeling the McCain campaign wanting to put America and American's first, implying the Puerto Ricans weren't Americans. They've been citizens since 1952.

I wish the flip side of the question was asked on whether they supported independence for PR.

"I don't see that in my lifetime"

Ward lists the issues that we need to resolve (budget, immigration, jobs) and then says it won't happen in his lifetime? Why is he running for congress if he doesn't think he will be able to effectively work to resolve any important issues?
I still can't figure out why this guy is running except for his own benefit.

Leads me to wonder what his job in the CIA actually was...

If you are working in the CIA, shouldn't you know which places are countries or territories of the U.S. ?

Is Puerto Rico comparable to Hawaii?

If there are questions about whether people born in Hawaii are citizens of the U.S. (i.e., Obama), should there also be questions about people who are born in another "country" like Puerto Rico being a U.S. citizen? Or does it all depend on the political party you represent? And if Ward is a friend of John McCain (who was born in the Canal Zone in Panama), does that mean Ward's citizenship should be questioned too? Hey, it's time these guys show us their birth certificates (not a copy) to prove they're real Americans!

You must've pulled Jenny's hair again, you skirt the issue!

I guess if PR became a state, Pres Obama would then have to.....

make plans to visit all 58 states! Yes We Can!

I'm so sorry tet

You only have one gaffe to choose from while we had such a target rich environment when Bush was POTUS. But hey, Caribou Barbie's comin' to town. Something to look forward to.

Oh gawd I can't wait...

to meat her.

Puerto Rico

Ward has been getting geography coaching from Sarah Palin.

Here, soothe your turmoil with this neat liquid they got there.

It's one of those things that go better with Coke.
