Idaho Treasurer Ron Crane and House Speaker Lawerence Denney have been named honorary co-chairs of state Rep. Raul Labrador's campaign, bolstering his claim to the GOP's most conservative wing.
Denney, R-Midvale, was already on Labrador's endorsement list and has been appearing with Labrador at campaign events. Crane has been treasurer since 1999 and earlier served 16 years in the Idaho House representing Canyon County.
“I can’t tell you how proud I am to have these conservative icons behind me as I work to earn the trust of grassroots Republicans across the 1st Congressional District,” Labrador said in a news release. “These two men continue to make tremendous contributions to our state. I’m humbled by their confidence.”
“I am proud to endorse Raul Labrador for Congress,” Crane said in the release. “He is part of a new generation of conservative leadership for Idaho and I am committed to helping him win this race anyway I can.”
Said Denney: “I’ve had the opportunity to work with Raul for the past four years in the Legislature. That’s where you can really get to know what a person is made of. How they solve problems, handle pressure. Labrador has proven himself to be a man of integrity and principle.”
Denney cited Labrador’s stand against Gov. Butch Otter's push to raise transportation taxes in 2009.
“The pressure was intense on House members to support a hike in the gas tax,” Denney said. “It took guts to resist powerful lobbying groups. But Raul knew it was the wrong thing for Idaho families and he just said no.”
