Idaho elections: Are all of Vaughn Ward's critics liberal attackers? (UPDATED)

UPDATED, with the news that conservative activist and former congressional candidate Dennis Mansfield is endorsing Raul Labrador for Congress.

I guess it's the next stage of grieving about news coverage.

First you blame the messenger. Then you use the messenger as a convenient way to try to raise some campaign bucks.

Having moved on in the grieving process, Republican congressional candidate Vaughn Ward sent this status update today to his Facebook followers.

"Over the last few days the liberal media has begun attacking us. Please donate today to ensure the we have the resources to combat these liberal attacks. A $5 dollar donation goes a long way in helping us fight the liberal media."

Talk about liberal use of the word "liberal." So, in Ward's world, is every critic a liberal? Including the brass at the U.S. Marine Corps, which told Ward to pull a campaign ad depicting the Marine major in combat fatigues? And including Valley County, which pointed out that Ward was past due on property taxes before Tuesday, when he paid $434.80 in bills, interest and a penalty?

And in the bad-to-worse department, conservative activist and former congressional candidate Dennis Mansfield has weighed in behind Ward's chief GOP rival, state Rep. Raul Labrador of Eagle.

At his blog, Mansfield said he had planned to remain neutral in the primary.

"The last few days, however, have caused me to revisit that decision. ... I have decided to stop carping about the self-destructive campaign behavior of the former front runner and put my time in a positive direction behind the former underdog."

Making lemonade

I'm just surprised it took him this long. Every single Republican candidate in the state scares their flock into sending money. Their biggest buggaboo has always been 'liberals' which to them is something other than "real" Americans. And all of those spoon fed koolaid drinking Foxbots lap the 'liberal media' excuse right up. You knew this card would be played. Good for you for pointing out how stupid it is.

Hey Sis...

Well said! Just like the MessNBC/Rachel Madcow worshiper, terrified lefty, Better-Red-Than-Dead believer you are.

NeverFlewInTet, thanks!

Thank you for making Sis's post that much more believable by contrast. I owe you a beer.

On Ward: His implosion is rapidly becoming embarra*ssing. I find Minnick far too conservative for me — hey, he's a blue dog — but at least he votes consistently with his stated platform. That's attractive, anymore; having any stand-up qualities at all. I'd rather vote for a guy I disagree with on lots but can trust to do what he says than an empty-headed spouter of political buzzwords.

(Wow yes the profanity filter has gone insane)

Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, here is exhibit A

in the case of 'irrational liberal hysteria derangement syndrome'.

...What bad luck being a jammed up lib.

You miss out on all the hot right wing women, then when your tenured at 50, you rant in the classroom with your bad hair and your fly is open. Blue lament.

Obama's plan

TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY TIME. Or, do you think we should be taxed even more to support programs a majority of Americans don't want. Do you call that a democracy? Obama is a socialist and is pandering to an ever-growing number of Americans who feel entitled to government aid. Votes is votes, and Obama is going to buy them any way he can. Oh ya, he's going to use OUR money to do it.

Did you know

that your tax rate is lower this year than anytime in the last 60 years. Now don't you look foolish. Good luck on those elections.

Thanks Sis, almost forgot the Bush tax cut saved $1811.39

per resident of your state. For me it saved 25k over 8 years. But, snap, Barry gonna take it away in 2011, cause daddy got ya, he run outta mo money. Sorry about my prose 'bra, grew up on the mean streets of Edge City.

This explains the local rise in pot busts right there.

Grow up Mr. Ward

Mr Ward, what exactly are you going to fight? Is anything that has been reported in the past few days false? Are you not running for political office? What exactly is there to fight? Time to put your big boy undies on Mr. Ward and realize that while you may have earned respect as a Marine, and you may be an all around nice guy, that does not mean that you are exempt from criticism. It definitely does not mean that everyone who is critical of you is a liberal. Whining is not becoming, and if you cannot handle this, how will you handle a full term in office?

Mr. Can't Do

He will not have to worry, even if he has no follow through.
He's looking for the same mentality of voter who support quitters and spineless candidates, like palin.

Walt vs Ward

I wonder if the 1st Dist. conservatives are giving conservative Democrat Walt Minnick a second look, now that Republican Primary candidate Vaughn Ward has imploded.

what a shock??

Ward's entire campaign thus far has revolved around SHOCK words, i.e Obama, Pelosi and now of course Liberal!! How about this Vaughn, pay your freaking property taxes on time like the rest of us, read the Dod rules on promotion actually find out what's going on in Idaho and maybe then we wont think of you as what you are thus far a JOKE!

What liberal media? What attacks? This is nothing but whine.

What does he claim is an attack? Does he mean the true story of his being supported by the same government jobs he decries? Does he mean his failure to pay his property taxes until called on it? (Please note that the story on the property taxes cited the same issues with regard to Mr. Minnick early in this decade.)

And what liberal media is he decrying? Does he mean just the Statesman, which is covering the race by finding out the facts, like any good newspaper should do -- and doing so with balance in citing the same errors by Rep. Minnick? Is there someone else?

As nearly as I can tell, all Mr. Ward is able to do is draw on the right-wingers' playbook and whine. If he were really an Idahoan, he would be talking about issues that matter in Idaho.

I suppose...

If you consider the Marine Corp a liberal attack machine!

They had BETTER attack liberally!

Ward's Problem

Vaughn Ward's problems aren't just that he didn't pay his taxes or ran an improper ad. Nor that he thinks the liberal media are out to get him.

Ward's problem is that, so far, his campaign is full of insubstantial buzz-words that tell us, the voters, nothing. He's doing fine at repeating the fighting words of the Republican party, but when I vote, I'm voting for the candidate who has a specific agenda.

We already know Ward's philosophy - it's that of the conservative Republicans. He's got to be specific now. What is he going to do and how is he going to do it?

Raul Labrador needs to do the same thing. At this point, I don't see any reason why I shouldn't favor the inc*u*mbent - I know how Walt Minnick will vote and his voting record, for the most part, has been pretty well in line with what I'd like to see in a Congressman.

Now, maybe Ward's and Labrador's votes in Congress would satisfy me, too, but since neither one has anything to say about issues that matter to me, I have no way of knowing.

Incidentally, Idaho Statesman, your vulgarity-checker is extraordinarily flawed.

Wrong man?

I looked at Mr. Ward's Facebook page, and found this question immediately below his photograph:

"Not the Vaughn Ward you were looking for? Search more."

I think that sums up his whole problem with those who formerly supported his candidacy.

Who is this Labrador guy?

With all the coverage on Ward, we kind of lose track of anyone else.

Persona Explained

Who is "we"?

I am experiencing no difficulty in tracking these candidates in my district.

Gray-- He doesn't care

Realistically special ed doesn't really care who Labrador is. Special ed wouldn't even care who Ward is if it weren't for the fact that Ward has been in the news. Special ed will just vote for whichever R candidate gets the nomination. Details not necessary.

I/O - I stand corrected!!!

Thanks for the heads up!

Ward not conservative enough for taters

Th big problem Ward is fighting is from within his own political party, this self proclaimed christian fundamentalist is not conservative enough for the social conservative taters who have control over the Republican Party of Idaho.

Ward recent exposure in the press originated from some where other than the Idaho mainstream media, the media just printed the story. It did not come from democratic supporters digging up the dirt on Ward, look deeper into the soulless republican party primary sources of other republican campaigns, Labrador is the one who will benefit, he is the one on the ropes, he is the one that the social conservative leadership wants to run against Minnick.

Labrador and his extremist faith based supporters have created a litums test for being republican enough to get the primary win, pay attention or you will miss the fun.

Ward is a target of his own party, not to mention he is a poor campaigner.

Oh Poor Popkey

I guess the fight was getting to poor Dan. He needed to call in some back up. Or maybe the Board said Ward was handling it too well and needed to fight a war on two fronts. Either way, it is pretty sad. The itty-bitty Mistakesman gets it feeling hurt. They are so used to candidates kissing their rears, or remaining silent.

And Mr. Ward did not say "ALL who disagree". Just pointing out the Liberal bias in the Mistakesman. There is no doubt about the bias. This is a misquote Mr. Richert makes, then argues against it. That is easy. Childish. My kids, put words in each others mouths then argue against it.

And I support Dem Walt Minnick btw. He has done a great job for Idaho and deserves 2 more years.

I don't get any of this...who are you for or against?

Grieving about news coverage, KR?

As someone who has subscribed to the Statesman for some 40 years, I (as a stakeholder) should advise you KR that you really don't know much about grieving for news coverage. Your lack of professionalism and incompetence is what leads one to grieve and yearn for the return of honest, factual news coverage. You, Parrish, and Gowler have "lead" a once proud organization into the lowest depths of "journalism". When I think about the truly professional leaders the Statesman has had over the years and the great service and product the paper once was -- I greive over what we've lost. More accurately, I grieve over what you have taken from us. I could drop my subscription, as many have, but I keep thinking one morning I will wake up and see evidence of the return of what once was a really first rate newspaper - one that truly served the community. I was here long before you arrived and I expect to be here long after you depart -- then the grieving will end. Signed, Grieving in Boise.

Mr Ward et al are whiners

Instead of attacking the media (because you know they've done their jobs well and are correct) and instead of calling anybody who shows a miniscule amount of rational intelligence a 'liberal' or a 'progressive', why don't you come clean with the skeletons hiding in your closet (eg your wife's job) and stop trying to make yourself out to look like some kind of superhuman. I've lived in Eagle for 30 years. I know Eagle and its history like the back of my hand. I've watched it go from quiet country suburb to a mini-Meridian. I've loathed at the thought of tearing up the foothills for profit and greed. How long have you lived in Eagle, Mr. Ward? What are your intentions? Let's hear some intelligent words coming out of your mouth instead of more jibberish.

Ward Vaughn is a joke

From his campaign ad I gather he has no "Core Values" no "Strong Family Values" and thinks our country lacks a strong defense. I wonder what the Marine Corps thinks about that last comment. I have news for Mr. Vaughn. The rest of of us do have Core and Family Values and think our military does a fine job. Hello for more support for Walt Minnick. Send Vaughn packing back to his east coast home.

The word "liberal"

1. favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.

2. (often initial capital letter) noting or pertaining to a political party advocating measures of progressive political reform.

3. of, pertaining to, based on, or advocating liberalism.

4. favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties.

5. favoring or permitting freedom of action, esp. with respect to matters of personal belief or expression: a liberal policy toward dissident artists and writers.

6. of or pertaining to representational forms of government rather than aristocracies and monarchies.

7. free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant: a liberal attitude toward foreigners.

8. open-minded or tolerant, esp. free of or not bound by traditional or conventional ideas, values, etc.

9. characterized by generosity and willingness to give in large amounts: a liberal donor.

10. given freely or abundantly; generous: a liberal donation.

So what's wrong with being liberal?

1. I'll give you that one
2. That one as well
3. accurate so far, but no real definitions yet
4. I have yet to see a democrat that didn't want to increase governemnt, therefore decrease individual freedoms. So that point is very debatable.
5. Same as above. Liberals are always the first to say that the 1st ammendment can't possibly apply to someone who thinks differently that they, because they are such horrible hurtful people. The PC movement, etc. I could go all day. So yes, a true liberal believes these things, but a great deal who call themselves liberal plainly don't.
6. Also an accurate description of a conservative. no argument here.
7. Sorry, haven't met any radical free of ignorant bigotry. Many progressives are tolerant of everyone but Christians and Conservatives. If you are bigoted toward anyone, then well, you are a bigot.
8. Again, on the extremes I really haven't seen this to be true for any ideology, but liberals tend to be more this way than conservatives.
9 and 10 Conservatives outgive liberals in every category and at every income level.

So to answer your question, with few exceptions I could be called a liberal. Cla*ssical liberal. However, I think we are living in a country where the Republicans are no longer conservative, and the progressives have left much of what is good about liberalism behind in their quest for total domination of the culture.

Truth is hard to come by

Hey PJ!

4. The two are not mutually exclusive - so your as*sumption is highly debatable.
5. Some do, some don't - your point?
7. If you haven't met one - this proves they do not exist? Whaaaat!
9 & 10. Per self report - which isn't so accurate. Evidence?

I see no reason to be completely skeptical about American politics [aside maybe from the microcosm of Idaho]. Americans have shown they are willing to expand upon the two party system - it takes time and impetus for serious changes to take hold in our political arena. We are all just apart of the ongoing evolution of American politics. It is not black & white, one is not good while the other is bad [despite that we may have a preference for one or the other]. Politics will never be stagnant. There is no reason not to just plug in and enjoy the ride!

I know...we're all a sad bunch aren't we, either way.

It's the beginning of the political process in Idaho, and I'm already tired. I'm really tired of every Republican blaming the so-called liberal media. Don't like it? Watch Fox news, it'll rot your brain faster anyway. Besides, the news isn't news anymore, it's just unsubstantiated garbage. If you don't like what the "media" has to say, write/speak about it...don't whine about it.

Mr. Ward, I hope you read this, "I'm pro-choice, I'm a Democrat, and I vote!" Bringing religion into your campaign is a cheap way to get votes from uninformed Idahoans living in some unknown portion of the Frank Church Wilderness Area. People may be more sympathetic to your "campaign woes" if you had an actual stance or platform that left abortion out of it. It's really not a political issue. Stating you are pro-life and a Republican informs me that you are just ignorant. Most, NOT ALL, people in this country don't agree with abortion, but do agree that the choice is necessary and government should have no role in the matter. So, how do you think you will get enough votes with that stellar commercial I keep seeing? Frankly, a Republican wanting to have the government involved in the matter is a blatant oxymoron.

Also, don't get on your high horse and blame all our financial problems on President Obama. It's not like this country handed him a silver platter he could tarnish. He's doing the best he can, and many of the financial issues are out of his hands and fall within the Legislative Branch of government, not the Executive. I wish that people would realize the U.S. President is more of a figure head than anything else. He/she is a leader of the people. So, don't complain about government bailouts to banks like Fannie Mae, when your wife (chief breadwinner) works for the company.

No, the stupid gods had a celestial convergence, that's all.

Liberal attacks!

Excuse me Mr. Ward what type of cheese would you like with your whine?

That's Cheez-its and grape Kool-Aid, peanut butter in between.
