Here’s a random collection of notes that I haven’t been able to use anywhere yet:
— Coaches have made several references to the cornerback situation as being three players for two spots — with senior Brandyn Thompson, the Fiesta Bowl defensive MVP, needing to earn his spot for this year. I’ve got a story on the other two corners, sophomore Jamar Taylor and junior Jerrell Gavins, in Wednesday’s Idaho Statesman.
Here’s what coach Chris Petersen said: “I promise you this — we’re going to put the two best out there. Brandyn is doing a good job but the heat’s on everybody.”
Here’s what defensive backs coach Marcel Yates said: “I need (Taylor and Gavins) to push Brandyn. I don’t want him to get comfortable. At times this spring, those two have been the best corners and he’s been the third guy. … Being a senior and a corner, you compare (Thompson) to the senior I had last year (Kyle Wilson). The senior I had last year was competing to be a first-round draft pick. As a coach you expect that from the guys who are here now. Is that fair? I don’t know, but that’s my standard and I’m going to hold them to that. … I’m hard on Brandyn.”
— Petersen wishes his team was still an underdog. “I like the underdog status,” he said. “I think it’s a better position to operate from. It’s getting harder and harder for us to do that. That’s one thing we work very hard around here on is making sure our kids understand that we’ll always be the underdogs — I don’t care who we play — because if you don’t have that mentality you start to develop a sense of entitlement.”
— Tailback Raphiel Lambert, who moved from cornerback and hadn’t practiced at his new position until this spring, has made some nifty moves in practice. He was out last year with a torn ACL. “He’s outslowing people,” Petersen said. “He’s a curveball thrower. He’s got some shake — it’s kind of slow shake, but it works.”
— Senior safety Jeron Johnson, who led the team with 91 tackles last year, is working on his tackling this spring. “My goal was 100 tackles,” he said. “I’m sure I missed more than 10 or so.”
— Wide receiver Austin Pettis dropped a pass the other day and didn’t take it well. “I thought he was headed to the river to throw himself in,” Petersen said.
— The game time for the Hawaii game has been changed to noon Nov. 6 — or 8 a.m. Hawaiian. It was moved up from 1 p.m. because of an event that night at Taco Bell Arena.

Are you kidding me?
I'm the only one here? Whoa!

nice to have you back.
Hey omikey
From Ivan Maisel
"USC Trojans coach Lane Kiffin wants his team, which underachieved in 2009, to maintain its focus from the moment that practice begins. Kiffin has hung a sign for his Trojans to see as they go to the practice field that says “Lock In.” OK, someone has to say it: No one at Pac-10 champion Oregon has hung a sign for the Ducks that says, “Lock Up.”
kinda funny........
Gavins is 5'9" -- does anyone see a potential problem here?
I would practice him against Pettis (6'3") and throw the fade to Pettis - out of 10 fade patterns, if Gavins couldn't successfully break up 5, I'd look to someone else. Short CB's often get picked on - the guy at Reno and the guy at TCU come to mind from last year. Good luck Gavins, but I still want to see you defend the fade.
No, although I'd have to do research to justify my hunch...
----------
Stop whining about the stupid signature and think for yourself.
Gavins is 5'9" and Wilson was 5'10"
BSU doesn't have big corners and they're all under 6 feet with the exception of Quaylon Ewing who is 6'0"
Wilson and Scandrick were both 5'10" so if there's a potential problem, as you suspect there is, then that potential problem would have to be more or less a recruiting problem would it not? Personally, I think that BSU has been doing an exceptional job of recruiting solid CB's over the years
..and I'm sure Wilson is still 5'10"
unless he's grown!

cover some bases...
I have been reading posts by BSU fans for a while, but never posted my own...I think that the time has come, so please allow me to cover a few different issues here.
-Boise State is entering the most anticipated season in history, there is a lot on the line this year. A possible Heisman, and if not a NC, then at least a big money bowl. So, to those people who complain that the Statesman covers the blue and orange too much, there is no such thing as 'too much' to those of us who bleed blue and orange, so save your breath...
-Heisman...Kellen Moore is a a darn good quarterback, and with a real good season, he should be a contender...but he needs support from his coaching staff, the press, his fans, but most, he needs support from his receivers. If Kellen were a QB for a high profile AQ team, he would win...but he isn't. Does he deserve the title? The stats will tell, but he is good enough to ride behind center of the new health care bill...and make it actually work.
-NC...Could BSU win consecutive road games at Alabama, Florida, and LSU...probably not, but maybe. Do I beleive BSU can coach, play, and win against any team in the nation given the wind blows their way? Absolutly. I believe that BSU would win the Pac-10 this season (yes, including a huge win at Oregon, at USC, and at Stanford if that is how the chips fell). I also believe they could win the ACC, and the Big East if the fans did their part. They could be in the title hunt in the Big-12 and the Big-10, again if the fans were with them...the SEC, well...it's the SEC, maybe not yet...
-As for scheduling...all I can say is that BSU football is a buisness like any other, it's all about money. We have no idea what the Bley and his team do behind closed doors in attempt to bring the most bling to the city of trees, but I must believe that they make the fan's intrests a huge part of the equation(and for good reason, we are their largest source of income behind tuition). Weather or not the Bley is pa*sing up possible opponents to lighten our schedule in attempt to earn our way into a big money bowl...we may never know.
-Sellout crowds...I want to see Bronco Stadium packed to the max as much as the next guy...but again, its about money. Experts have found the perfect ticket price to bring the optimum number of fans into the game, to make the most money, period. If you are not one of these experts with all of the stats that they bring into their equation, you have no room to argue against ticket prices. Unsold tickets provided at a discounted price simply won't work. Only a idiot would buy tickets early, knowing that if they wait, they will get the ticket at half price.
-Coach Pete...BSU fans, players, staff, and everyone who gives two ***** about BSU football is lucky to have this guy. He is it best coach in the country, and he is the biggest reason why we as fans are enjoying the high tide of blue and orange. We must keep him here at all costs if we care about the direction of BSU football!
Kid, Truth, tfunk...I enjoy banter, and debate. Look for my oppinion in further posts -still bleeding blue!
Welcome BleedBlue....
nice job on the thoughts. More should feel free to express themselves as well just as you have done.
You've sparked some thoughts from me BB. On the 'bling' deal, while I may look at it a little differently, I was wonder what you would consider 'bling' on the schedule? What 'bling' has been here in the past and what do you look for in the future?
Do you see anyway that BSU can sell those unsold tickets? Or do we just allow those to be forgotten and move on?
IF this football team were in Pullman at WSU do you think they would sell out every home game (In other words, they would have won their conference just as many times, done the top 10 polls, been to two BCS bowls in 4 years and had a won loss record of 49-4 with coach Pete in the drivers seat. Same goes for Oregon St., Fresno St., Arizona. Just curious what you think.....
Do you think selling out the games is important to coach Pete? Do you think that perhaps selling out Bronco Stadium for every home game would be of value (in the respect dept.) to coach Pete? You're right, we're lucky to have him and need to KEEP him.
You sound as if you think Kellen would win the Heisman at any AQ school. While I agree with you I'm just wondering what you think as to why he has a lesser chance by playing at BSU.
On the whole "how would BSU do if they were in the XXX conference....it's really impossible to say because they aren't in any of those conferences and probably never will be. I know it's fun for all to chime in - and I've done so myself - but I think you agree it's all 'pie in the sky' .... the fact is that BSU has never had to play the schedule of a BCS conference school so we simply don't know how they would do. But....I would like their chances.
Thanks for stepping up BB....we need more 'minds' involved in this little banter. People like yourself that will express their feelings in a civil manner and actually offer support for the way you feel. It's welcome.
Funky, Potato, Broncos81, The Kid and myself often go off the deep end but somehow we manage to survive the onslaught of written abuse that comes our way. All in all, I think we respect each others opinions. I don't want to carry on anymore about Funky, Bronk81 and Pothead because they might get the idea that they were finally making some sense ... and we can't have that.
So....welcome BB!
thanks for posting blue
you make some great points. i think you overestimate the sec. the season will be so much fun. as for kellen and the heisman, you will find a lot of support on here for your viewpoint. truth has pointed out previously that boise state will need to spend some big $$ on a campaign if he is going to be a finalist. he is probably correct but i believe it is also possible a sizable contingent of national media may adopt kellen & boise state and push it on their own which would be so cool. keep it coming.
When it comes to Heisman candidates...
in the modern age of college football, what a candidate does on the field is just as important as what it's athletic department does for them off the field, and it takes a lot of money for a school to promote and market a Heisman candidate.
Alabama, who has very deep pockets, has already proved that it can run a successful campaign considering that Ingram won it last year and with him returning and with Bama being the preseason #1, Bama/Ingram could very well win it again in 10,
BSU's athletic department isn't in a good financial situation right now and because of that, I don't think that they could afford to successfully market Moore as a candidate, nor do I think that Coach Pete would welcome that kind of distraction, who knows, but I do hope you're right 81, in that a sizable contingent of national media could adopt Kellen Moore and BSU and push it on their own.
Interesting kid,
You almost sound like you consider Kellen a Heisman candidate......
But that can't be, he hasn't even thrown a p-a-s-s yet,,,,,,,,
The most cost effective way to promote Kellen Moore is....
....grxxxroots (OH DARN! ANOTHER WORD WITH A-S-S in it!!). But since the Statesman won't let us write the word G-R-A-S-S-R-O-O-T-S we'll have to find another word to discribe it. (I can't believe the Statesman and how backwards and unprofessional they can be.....)
The internet via the various social networks affords one the opportunity to promote and market without having to spend a whole lot of money. BUT....let's remember the 'market' on the Heisman is the voters themselves. Direct targeting the 'voters' is expensive, yes. But it could be done effectively for not a whole lot of money. Granted, it wouldn't be a campaign like Alabama could run for Ingram or Washington could run for Locker -- but it would get the name out there.......and let's also remember there is always the year after as well. One given is that IF a University can get a Heisman winner -- especially a young and relatively unknown university like BSU -- it would bring the kind of exposure money can't buy to BSU - and not just for football. It's an opportunity that seldom, if ever may come again.
NOTE TO THE STATESMAN: How many times do we have to bring this edit issue up???? Graxxroots doesn't look too good in print. Did you know that you actually PRINT these same words in YOUR PAPER that you tell us WE CAN'T USE????
PLEASE ---just get it fixed. It's makes you look like some weekly rag in the middle of the Badlands of North Dakota. Very unprofessional.
the edit software is lame

They did it on purpose and you have to buy them to fix it.

Dude, you are not there,
I scrounged around looking for you. You sure you haven't been secretly suspended?
Try this again...
This is so much fun...I get to do it twice. I typed and edited for 20 minutes on a great post...posted it, and it didn't post...lost it, bummer.
-Heisman...I don't think that Coach Pete would mind a Heisman race interfering with the season, as long as it didn't actually interfere. It would be a feather in Coach's hat(and his staff's) almost as much as Kellen's. Financing a Heisman race is costly, but maybe becuase he plays for BSU he will get more recognition from the media becuase his winning is unlikly, but still a frontrunner.
-Selling seats...I am usure what to do with unsold tickets. An idea might be to offer one or two thousand tickets at a discounted price early, and advertise that there is a limited number, so rush rush rush! Then start selling them at normal price. That might fill those seats that would otherwise be empty, maybe not...just a thought. Would Bronco Stadium fill if it were in another town of similir size in an AQ conference with everything else the same, I have no idea. I don't know what the ticket prices are at other schools, and I am not going to cheapen this post by looking it up. I do know that we in Boise love us some Bronco football, and if we can't fill the seats, I doubt anybody else could.
-Scheduling, again...It costs a lot of money to bring a big name team to the blue. I can understand, though don't like it, that Bley and his team might have pa*sed up an offer due to cost. I believe that there is NO team in the country that can beat BSU in our house if we play good football. I know that is a big statement, and would love to see it proven. Until the Broncos are out of the WAC, and can start demanding big name teams, instead of begging them, we probably won't see a top 5 school on the blue. If we do, it will be very rare. Remember, BSU is every team on our schedule's biggest game of the season for them (bowl excepted, of course). That includes VA Tech. They are shakin' in their pads at the thought of playing us, and if they aren't, they should be.
-The Blue...I really really really hate to say this next part. As my name states, I love the blue field that we play on. I think, however, it can be compared to a nick name that you love, and insist on being called by it, but to everyone else, it is a little dumb and a little childish. I think that if we want to be taken seriously on the big stage, we need to prove that we can win at home on a green field, and play big boy football.
I am curious if others share these views, or if I am just being stupid...smart alek comments encouraged!!! -BB
hi bleeding blue...
Lots of material there. But as for the blue.... I like to think that one of the most famous images in all of College football is the touchdown Jesus for ND. You can't get more hokey than that my friend. Yet it has evolved to an icon. I say so it will be with the blue. 20 years form now when BSU has several NCs and plays in a big boy league, we will have that as our identity. Love it or hate it it sure aint going anywhere.... I dont care who is in charge years down the road can you ever see someone reversing that train. Can't unring that bell my friend. Just have to embrace the blue for the magic it has had and for the magic it will bring.
Well the good news BB?
....is you tell it like it is, which puts you closer to The Kid and I. (NOTE: Some sarcasm at play -- but only 'some'...)
I agree on the field. Well said but....the kool aid drinking natives on here will light their hair on fire and start plotting on just how to 'whack' you. You never 'dis' "The Blue" according to them. Just fair warning. I know, I know. You didn't really 'dis' the blue but you DID suggest a GREEN FIELD. Holy jumpin Evangelicals! You never do that on this blog! (Note: Somewhat serious response by TTT there).
At least you're thinking a bit creatively BB on the tickets (sell outs). It really does need to happen. I don't really care how they do it -- just do it! I've pitched proposals on here but when the Bley reads these posts he seems to have an interuption right when he gets to my posts. (I think that's when he starts making those phone calls to schedule more cream puffs).
The Heisman? I would love to see Moore get a shot at it but will leave the whole thing up to coach Pete. He knows what works for his team and I'll trust he has an opinion on this one. (NOTE: I would think he would be in favor of it....it wouldn't hurt recruiting one bit, that's for sure. Plus it would get BSU some outstanding publicity.)
Nice to have you around here BB. We need more 'common sense' posters like yourself!!
Welcome blue
Good post.
Heisman - You can tell when coach Pete talks about Moore that he thinks a lot of the kid. Still, if BSU and Moore get off to a good start, I'd be surprised if Moore gets to talk to the media at all.
Selling tix - Good idea, but I think we need to wait and see how this season pans out attendance wise.
Scheduling - I only disagree about the "top-5" part. I think BYU, Utah, and OSU all have the potential of being top5 teams.
The Blue - I love the blue, but I do get tired of "others" making more of it than it is.
welcome to the group
Interesting POV bleedingblue
Heisman- I think that if BSU wasn't ranked as high as they are, and if they didn't have a realistic shot at the NC, then perhaps Coach Pete might be a little more welcoming of the Heisman hype that will be surrounding Moore this season, but even then I'm sure that he'd have something to say along the lines of none of the marketing matters if Moore and the team aren't taking care of business on the football field and that if they can focus on football, then everything else will fall in place.
Selling seats- BSU in general has ben doing a decent job at getting folks to come to games, however, there's probably another 15K fans across the valley who for whatever reason, prefer to go out to sports bars to watch the Bronco's play, and they'll spend about the same amount watching football in a sports bar than they would if they actually bought a ticket and went to the game, so in my view, the athletic department needs to figure out how to lure those people into Bronco Stadium.
Again, in my view, the athletic department needs to realize that they're in the sports entertainment business. They need to get a lively PA announcer, better halftime activities, like instead of throwing a football through a tractor tire in the back of a pick up truck, have local musicians play during halftime, or something along those lines.
Sceduling- It's clear to see that their hands are pretty much tied when it comes to scheduling, and that the teams they've lined up are the best teams they can get, so my not create a new position that does nothing but schedule, market, and promote football and basketball games. I know that the department already has people doing those things, but it's safe to say that they're not doing those things very well, maybe it's just time for a new AD, and I know that Funk and tater will go nuts over that, but seriously, if our ad has come to the point to where he has to resort to begging the ncaa to change the rules so he can be as effective as his counterparts, then there's something wrong.
He's a UCLA guy with strong connections, so why isn't BSU playing UCLA? Why don't we ask UGA for a one and done, have them pay our expenses and a little bit of cash and do it the same year we go to Hawaii, so we can schedule an additional home game, or better yet, try to get the Atlanta Falcons to set up a deal similar to what the Redskins are doing which is what enabled us to play VaTech? Sports marketing is huge right now, and maybe we need to think outside the box and hire someone from the X-games or the Dew Cup, to help us line up bigtiem football games because after all, college football is sports entertainment, right?
Only you kid
would suggest BSU fire an AD and hire someone from the X-games or the Dew Cup............
Come to think of, Oregon is looking for an AD, they are probably already in discussions with the X-games.....
Another awesome Bleytwin recommendation on getting rid of the BSU AD.
Only you funk ...
would cherry pick and come to that conclusion
Is this, or is this not, my quote? "why not create a new position that does nothing but schedule, market, and promote football and basketball games. I know that the department already has people doing those things, but it's safe to say that they're not doing those things very well, maybe it's just time for a new AD"
As you can clearly see, I am not suggesting that BSU fire Bleymaier and hire someone from the X-Games or the Dew Cup to replace him. It's clear to see that I wrote replacing him as a last resort. In fact, I wrote about creating a NEW position.
Do you suppose this could be why I'm constantly bringing up your lack of reading comprehension skills?
Anyway, why not respond to his UCLA connection and why they're not on our schedule, or about a rematch with UGA, and possibly in the Georgia Dome?
Why not come up with a good reason why an X-Games or Dew Cup executive wouldn't be a good fit for BSU's needs?
Why funk?
Gee.....maybe the Bley would like Eugene?
....not much snow, a little wet, an already sold out football stadium. Gee, he could even make the field yellow over there!
...oh, what's that you say? They haven't called him? I know, I know. You're real happy he didn't get called because you didn't want to have to scrap that bronze statue did you?
(NOTE: some sarcasm at play above)
O brother.
I've heard of gay men and gay women... and there's nothing wrong with that... but gay Broncos. Get a room.
good stuff...
Omikey is right, better leave the tight ends on the field...
Hey BB, good to meet you.

hey blue bleed
nice post, like the ticket idea. blue field stays forever though. just as tater2 refers to touchdown jesus, the swamp in florida, lsu's craziness, fans in red at nebraska and so on, all are identity legends that make cfb part of what it is.
