TRACK AND FIELD

Cody McCarthy, Bishop Kelly: The junior won the shot put at a dual meet against Columbia on Thursday with a toss of 52 feet, 1 inch. His season best last spring was 50-7, which ranked 15th among all classifications. McCarthy finished seventh in last year’s 4A state meet with a throw of 44-11.5.

Jessica Tiffany, Columbia: The senior, who will play volleyball at the University of Idaho, won three events against Bishop Kelly on Thursday. She won the high jump with a clearance of 5 feet, 2 inches, won the long jump with an effort of 16-6 and won the triple jump with a winning mark of 34-8.

BASEBALL

Colton Sale, Mountain View: The sophomore infielder played two games last week and had one hit in each game, but both were home runs. He finished 1-for-4 in a 7-4 victory against Centennial on Thursday with a home run and four RBIs, and was 1-for-3 with a home run and his team’s only RBI in a 5-1 loss against Centennial.

SOFTBALL

Bryanna Kopczynski, Rocky Mountain: The junior owns a 0.00 earned run average and led the Grizzlies to a pair of conference wins last week. On Thursday, she pitched a complete-game shutout in a 6-0 win against Mountain View with 13 strikeouts with one walks and four hits. She also was 2-for-3 at the plate. On Friday, she pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts, seven hits, no walks and no earned runs in a 10-2 win. She was 2-for-4 at the plate.

TENNIS

Drew Brigham, Eagle: The Mustangs’ No. 1 singles player had to work hard to get past Timberline’s Alvin Le, 6-7, 6-2, 7-3 on Wednesday, then rolled past Mountain View’s Fernando Mercado 6-0, 6-0 on Thursday.

Madelyn Weltzin, Mountain View: The Mavericks’ No. 1 singles player knocked off Boise’s Kelsey Inch 6-0, 6-0 on Wednesday, then topped Eagle’s Carolyne Brigham 6-0, 1-6, 10-6 on Thursday to open the season.

GOLF

Brainhurst Garret, Centennial: The Patriots won a four-way outing against Boise, Borah and Vallivue last Monday at Crane Creek Country Club, and Garret led the way with medalist honors. He shot 37 over nine holes to open the season.

Cali Hipp, Middleton: Last year’s third place finisher at the 4A state tournament opened the season with a victory against golfers from Bishop Kelly, Columbia and Emmett at Purple Sage Golf Course with a score of 41. Middleton won the team race.
