The Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl likely will move to a pre-Christmas date this year — and perhaps for coming years as well.

The H-Bowl is close to a new four-year contract with ESPN, executive director Kevin McDonald said. ESPN has a huge role in determining the game date and could place the Humanitarian Bowl on the schedule as early as Saturday, Dec. 18 or as late as Thursday, Dec. 23. A post-Christmas date also remains a possibility.

The game also could be played at night instead of its usual afternoon time slot. It will be on ESPN, McDonald said.

“Pre-Christmas doesn’t really bother me,” he said. “As I’ve looked at the ratings history of bowl games, pre-Christmas and right after Christmas, it stays pretty strong. … We’ve been outrated the last two years by the New Mexico Bowl.”

The New Mexico Bowl was played on Dec. 19 and 20 the past two years, featuring teams from the WAC and Mountain West.

The H-Bowl expects to sign agreements with the WAC and Mid-American Conference for this year’s game. Idaho beat Bowling Green of the MAC last year, drawing a 2.4 rating to tie the bowl’s record.

The Humanitarian Bowl has been played between Dec. 27 and Jan. 3 during its 13-year run at Bronco Stadium.

Boise State football coach Chris Petersen said Thursday that wide receiver Titus Young could be on the verge of a monster senior season.

“If Titus keeps working like he’s been working, he’s going to have a pretty special year,” Petersen said.

Young, who was suspended for most of the 2008 season, led the Broncos last year with 79 receptions, 1,041 receiving yards and 15 total touchdowns. He scored 10 receiving touchdowns, three rushing touchdowns and two kickoff-return touchdowns to earn first-team All-WAC honors as a receiver and returner. He could add punt-return duties to his role this year.

“I think he’s excited about this year,” Petersen said, “because I think he thinks like we feel — if he can take the next step in his game of being a very consistent and detailed player and person that he can do some very, very special things. … And I think he’s making a lot of progress toward that.”

Young hasn’t been available to the media since he was suspended early in the 2008 season. That likely will change this fall, Petersen said.

Petersen likes what he has seen through two spring practices, both in helmets only. The Broncos put on shoulder pads Friday.

“I really feel like we hit the ground running in terms of effort and intensity,” he said. “We told them if we can keep this up for 13 more practices with not having any bad days, with just this type of effort and focus, we’ll be making the progress we need to make.”

•••

Petersen on Nate Potter’s possible switch from left tackle to left guard: “We’re seeing he might be a better guard. … Nate’s a big, physical guy.”

•••

Sophomore Raphiel Lambert moved from cornerback to tailback last fall while he was rehabilitating a torn knee ligament, Petersen said.

Lambert was a star tailback at Jesuit High in Portland. He practiced this week for the first time in nearly a year.

“That may be his most natural position,” Petersen said. “That was the whole idea behind it. … We are anxious to see him do something there. Even watching him go through drills, he has a natural feel for how he moves and hides behind things.”

•••

Offensive lineman Cory Yriarte has reinjured the knee in which he tore the anterior cruciate ligament last fall, Petersen said. The extent of the injury and Yriarte’s status for 2010 haven’t been determined.

Yriarte wasn’t expected to participate in spring ball regardless. He started one game at center and two games at guard as a freshman in 2008.

•••

Starting guard Kevin Sapien, who retired because of debilitating neck/shoulder injuries, was “miserable” last season, Petersen said.

“He was miserable in the Fiesta Bowl,” Petersen said. “It was hard for him. When you’re miserable in the Fiesta Bowl, you know something’s not right. … It’s just scary when you’re talking about your neck and nerves and those types of things.”

Matt Paradis of Council, the scout defensive player of the year last fall, has moved to the offensive line at least for the spring.

What about the weather!

What about game attendance November versus December. It is much colder at night in December than November and would affect attendance. If it doesn't make any difference how many attend but the net money so be it.

January vs. December

I do not think the H-Bowl has ever been played in November? But I agree, daylight game vs. night time.... brrrr.

brrrrrrrrrr?

Feels like football weather. If you're playing without frost -bite, it's not cold enough!

Titus Young

The only "special" season I hope he has is one where he isn't penalized for bonehead celebrations. There is a rumor going around that the NCAA wants to enforce celebratory penalties DURING the play. Translation: the play gets called back +10 yds NEGATING the play.

I think it's overkill.

It's not rumor

The new rule is aimed at those kids who are not mature enough to delay their celebrations until they are in the end zone. If you celebrate or taunt an opponent while on the way to the end zone, the score will be negated and a 15-yard (not ten) penalty will be assessed from the point of infraction. There will be a "break in" period during 2010 and the penalty will be fully inforced in 2011. I have no problem with it. If you're not smart enough to not celebrate until you're in the end zone, you shouldn't be on the field in the first place.

Bronco Basketball

I can't seem to find a single story about the Men's basketball at all, but found this quickly. It shows that Bronco Nation will not support Coach Graham when he has one bad season. They will only support an undefeated team because they are embarassed to be associated with them!!!!! Coach has has one bad season and everyone is calling for him to be fired after so many great seasons. They only support you if you are winning and will not want to be associated with or talk to you if you aren't perfect!!!!!

balanced

"so many great seasons."? not so sure about your investigative talents my friend. they have had a couple of good years prior to this one but they have gone nowhere in the tournament. don't even mention perfection. get to the sweet sixteen and then we will have something to celebrate. we are all bronco fans but just as winning the wac in football is no big deal, basketball is the same.

Chad or Murph

Balanced is not the first to cry about not being able to read about his and their Basketball program (ping pong, water sports, whatever). Could you guys create a page (or two) for those guys and gals? It's not like you have to write much about B-Ball and Graham - but just so they have their space (spaces) and in that way they might stay away from this football section. I am miserable enough just waiting for you all to post regarding gridiron news, but to have to read these ones whining about B-Ball and Grahams supposed one bad year is just more than this football fan can handle. No hard feelings "Balanced" I like basketball - that is until I watched the Graham version ; (

Hey Funky, your questions/my answers disappeared...

....hummmm.

Wasn't my fault (yet)

Stop whining about the stupid signature and think for yourself.

But wait!

they are in the MEMORANDUM!

We are now free to post after week one........

What memorandum? I feel like I'm trapped in an episode of CHUCK!

----------

Stop whining about the stupid signature and think for yourself.

Or CHUCK the DUCK

Oh, according to die-hard Ducks the memorandum is James' "get out of jail free after one game card"

Well, that's their problem.

Stop whining about the stupid signature and think for yourself.

Been busy all day,

Hmmm, I didn't take them down!

Just walked in the door and see that Graham's not staying in Boise and Silsby is not coming back to Boise (anytime soon). I'd say Boise's had a good day.

lol....I like that one tfunk! Very Good!

....now the Bley needs to go do his job and find someone to coach. Then he needs to step aside and let someone who cares run the basketball operations. I suggest an Asst. AD who reports directly to Dr. Kustra. Just for Basketball. That way Gene can worry about all the unfinished business with football. Like selling out every home game!

I have recommended

That he hire Bobby Dye to oversee the program as an special assistant to the AD.

But he can bypass that step if he gets the right coach.

I'll say it again, Gene, check out Todd Bozeman at Morgan State!

http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/5667/what-will-todd-bozeman-do-next

Bozeman would need to be vetted and interviewed ....

...by more than just the Bley. While I'm a firm believer that people can and do make mistakes (damn...none of us are perfect) his 'error' was about as bad as they get. Can he coach? I think so...that's pretty clear. But if one has 'cheated' the system before, the chances are good that they would do it again in some way. Does that mean he didn't learn his lesson? No. He may have and that's where the interview and a whole lot of 'vetting' would have to come into play.

I might be inclined to take a hard, long look at St. Mary's head coach Randy Bennett. Would he leave the Gaels to come to Boise? He just might for the right set of circumstances and the money. I'd at least have him on the short list.

If you're going to look at a guy like Bozeman, I would also suggest a long look at Cameron Dollar (Seattle U now). He did have a recruiting 'violation' as well, but not like Bozemans'. He was/is an outstanding recruiter and was Romar's right hand man at Washington for a number of years. He's the first coach at Seattle U since they started playing basketball again and has done a real good job there in getting SU off to a good start in the redevelopment of their program.

That's enough 'advise' for now. I'd have to charge a consultant fee for more. (note: yes, a little sarcasm is involved with that statement - sort of)

Bozeman

has been been back four years now without even sniff from the NCAA. You have to read his story, anyone who must sit out 8 years from his career choice, do everything right during those 8 years, isn't likely to mess up. I like this dude a lot, he just got Morgan State in the dance again and his current salary is under $200K.

Bennett just signed through 2017 believed to be worth $500-600K.

Maybe Bley will add your consultant fee to next years budget.......

bozeman proved his worth

at cal. giving him another shot would be a good move.
