Boise State junior Nate Potter has spent the first two days of spring ball at left guard. He was an All-WAC first-teamer at left tackle last season.
Potter likely will spend most of the spring at guard in an experiment offensive line coach Chris Strausser hopes will help him sort out a crowded situation at tackle.
The Broncos have high hopes for sophomore Faraji Wright and freshman Charles Leno Jr., who are playing left tackle, and sophomore Brenel Myers, who is playing right tackle. They also return Garett Pendergast, Matt Slater and Michael Ames, who have started at tackle in the past.
Potter (6-foot-6, 297 pounds) is unusual in that he has the ability to play low like a guard despite his size.
“Now’s the time to figure out if that’s something he can do,” Strausser said. “It’s a little bit of a rare situation where we have some decent depth at tackle. I know Nate can play tackle. I need to find out what he can do at guard. … I’ve been impressed.”

One of the big bonuses in returning so many starters is familiarity with your position and the teammate next to you. The Broncos have already lost Sapien, and now moving Potter would mean basically three players starting positions they did not start at last year. I would leave Potter where he is, and work the other tackles at guard as they are young and can move to tackle next year. In blow out games give them reps at tackle and let them get familiar with that spot for next year. With early season dates with Virginia Teach and Oregon State, BSU will need every advantage they can get and breaking in 3 of 5 new starting lineman would not be one of them.
