Borah's Craig Spjute, Eagle's Jameson Shaw on a roll in 5A SIC boys basketball

Lately, Borah senior Craig Spjute and Eagle senior Jameson Shaw are giving high school boys basketball fans ample reason to stand up and cheer.

Spjute, who leads the 5A Southern Idaho Conference in scoring with an average of 22.8 points per game, has kicked it up a notch over the past couple weeks. In Borah's last five games, Spjute has averaged 26.8 points.

Spjute

Here's a rundown of Spjute's last five games: vs. Caldwell, Jan. 23, 75-63 win, 33 points; at Boise, Jan. 16, 58-57 loss, 29 points; vs. Vallivue, Jan. 15, 63-57 loss, 26 points; at Timberline, Jan. 12, 57-51 win, 18 points; at Rocky Mountain, Jan. 8, 68-60 win, 28 points.

Spjute ranks third in the conference in overall shooting percentage (57.1), eighth in 3-point percentage (37.3) and second in free-throw percentage (85.4). He also averages 7.1 rebounds (third), 2.5 assists and 2.6 steals.

Borah is 8-7 overall and 7-6 in league play with a 7:30 p.m. Friday home game against Capital this week.

Shaw, who is leading the 5A SIC in shooting percentage (64.1), ranks seventh in scoring after a recent hot streak.

League statistician Steve Schroeder provided me with a quick breakdown of Shaw's sizzling form. In his last three games, he is shooting 85 percent (34-of-40). He was 6-of-9 on 3-pointers during that same stretch. If you include the two prior games, Shaw's shooting percentage is still 77.4 (48-62).

Here's a rundown of Shaw's last five games: vs. Timberline, Jan. 23, 76-59 win, 19 points (8-11); vs. Rocky Mountain, Jan. 22, 85-63 win, 24 points (11-11); at Mountain View, Jan. 16, 75-60 win, 31 points (15-18); vs. Meridian, Jan. 15, 64-50 win, 12 points (6-11); vs. Centennial, Jan. 8, 58-51 win, 19 points (8-11).

Shaw, who averaged 21 points in those five games, also is averaging 5.7 rebounds this season.

Eagle is 14-1 overall and leads the 5A SIC at 12-1. The Mustangs host second-place Vallivue at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Boise at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Eagle's only loss this season was a 62-54 setback at Vallivue on Dec. 19. I will be at Friday night's game, so look for story in Saturday's paper about the showdown atop the league standings.
