Boise State coach Chris Petersen voted the Broncos No. 2 on his final USA Today Coaches’ Poll ballot.
Petersen’s top five were Alabama, Boise State, Texas, Florida and Ohio State. He put TCU sixth.
“We did everything that we were asked to do and took care of business as much as we could,” he said of putting the Broncos No. 2. “That’s a ranking that our kids, in my mind, are worthy of. I think if TCU would have won, a lot of people would have been having maybe TCU in that spot.”
The Broncos, who were ranked No. 6 going into the bowls, finished No. 4 in both polls. They beat TCU 17-10 in the Fiesta Bowl. The Horned Frogs were No. 3 in both polls and dropped to No. 6.
The No. 4 ranking is the highest at the end of a season for the Broncos. They were No. 5 (AP) and No. 6 (USA Today) in 2006.
“I think that’s great,” Petersen said. “It’s the highest ranking we’ve ever had, so progress is being made. I don’t truly get hung up on that thing. … With the people they’re talking about around us, to be in that company, is special.”

On SportsCenter this morning, Lou Holtz put Boise State at No. 5 on his 2010 preseason top five. Mark May put Virginia Tech at No. 5.
Sounds like the Broncos-Hokies game, if it does get moved to Labor Day, could surpass this year’s Oregon game for hype.

Boise State and quarterback Kellen Moore broke NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision records for interceptions this season.
The Broncos threw three interceptions — at a rate of 0.66 percent. That easily broke the previous marks of 0.84 (300-399 attempts, Fresno State, 1999) and 0.85 (400-plus attempts, Bowling Green, 2004). The Broncos threw 458 passes.
Moore threw all three of those picks — at a rate of 0.70 percent. That broke the mark for passers with at least 350 attempts. Marquel Blackwell of South Florida set the record at 0.74 percent in 2002.
Those also are school records. Jeff Mladenich set the individual mark in 1991 (0.83) and the team mark was set in 2003 (1.84). This is the first time the Broncos have thrown fewer than seven interceptions in a season.
Boise State finished third in the nation in turnover margin at plus-21. The defense tied for third with 35 takeaways; the offense tied for seventh with 14 giveaways.
“That’s a stat that everybody would love to be able to get done and these guys did that,” Petersen said.

Chadd I think you are doing a helluva job covering the Broncos. Most of us are a conceited picky bunch who expect a lot. You deserve a Hawaiian vacation. Vndl will pay for it.
That's funny.

You are the man! That is so cool! I laughed so hard too when I first saw it. I love Michael Landon and the Blue and Orange make it that much better. Im going to put it on my profile. Thanks so much for doing that for me.
Is it juvenile of me that I know Michael Landon as Charles Ingalls and not so much as Little Joe?
I'm happy you like it.
They should have avatars on all the blogs... hear that Murph? Just part of the fun.... I'll make you one Murph.
Have a great 2010
Ok, all the hype about Colt McCoy and how many touchdown passes, etc. he threw and I hope next year Moore gets the 'green light' to run up the score, etc. and they we'll see all the 'critics' state that it's the conference again but who cares? Go! Throw! Touchdown!
Coach pete rocks and
And Chad you aren't that bad either.
Tater2 - Long Time No See, Buddy ! !
As, you have enlightened me about the merits of Carroll College and their fotball team - the 'Fighting Saints'; I have dug deeper and found out their debate team is nationally ranked and is known as the 'Talking Saints'.
I have conducted further investigation and have learned that, because Carroll is such a small (but, indeed very good academically) college, they don't have a marching band or even a Cowbell player, like BSU does. They have to rely, solely, on their football team to perform, during halftime, every game. I was fortunate to get a home video copy of one of their recent performances this past Fall, when they travelled to Sweden and played their 'Fighting Acolytes':
http://vodpod.com/watch/1548742-sweden-got-talent-naked-guys-dancing
We have a cowbell player!
But it is an actual cow....with a bell.....
Tater2 - Her name - Clarabell - She's a Famous Cheesecake Model
Tater2: Maybe Carroll College could do an intercollege study abroad type thing. So the Montana kids could get to a big campus like BSU. Then your Cowbell banger could be a 'walk-on' for the BSU marching band. She could maybe be a member of their 'scout team' and replicate how the other 'cowbell bangers' will be banging their cowbells for the opposing marching bands. I think marching bands share halftime game tapes with each other and prepare for their 'games'/shows, too.
She also, could try to be one of them BSU dancing girls that performed at halftime, at the Fiesta Bowl, on national TV. You know, the 'Prancing Percherons of Parma'?
I do feel sorry though, for Sad Cowbell Girl, and how she was 'victimized' and cruelly humilliated and all, by so many folks, following the Fiesta Bowl. She probably never expected to perform at halftime, as part of the BSU Blue Thunder Marching Band, at the Fiesta Bowl, in front of 70K people. She probably thought that she was getting on a bus to go class and it stopped two days later and let her off in Glendale. Sorry to see she got hoodwinked and blindsided. I understand her ego and self-esteem are so shattered now, that she can't even look at herself in the mirror.
But there is sunshine for her future. I am told that Coach Pete is giving her a chance to do a few 'tryout' kicks from the left hash. Who knows, probably won't do much worse?
Note: Nothing in the post is entended to be serious or bring any negative reflections upon anyone, because of anything, and serving absolutely no purpose. It is just basically: dry humor.

Statesman
I'll second the previous post. The Idaho Statesman has done an impeccable job this year. I appreciate the different opinions. It's always compelling & thought provoking. I cant log-on without checking the Statesman's website first. And listening to the Idaho Sports Talk radio show is more fun than a barrel of monkeys. That radio show and it's production
quality is addictive, and hilarious! I support the sponsors of these two media outlets. Great season gang!
Great coverage in an informative, and entertaining delivery.
Chad
Thank you for the good job you have done this year covering the Broncos. If the statesman "cleans house", I hope they keep you. Keep up the good work.
Should we be nervous about coach Pete and USC?
With Carroll bailing out at USC I would have to speculate that Petersen would be very high (if not the highest) on the list of potential candidates.
SC is one of the handful of elite programs that might be able to at least interest Petersen.
But would coach Pete take a job at USC with NCAA sanctions lurking in the shadows?
Would he pass up on the opportunity have a legit shot at something very special next year with the Broncos?
SC is an attractive job for any coach. The Trojans would probably pay at least twice as much and clearly have the funds for any buyout of Petersen's existing contract. Remember the new contract is not in effect until the State Board of Education approves it.
Time to get a little nervous --- again?
Since the college football season is over, I just thought I'd give all you people out there who suddenly find you have nothing to do on Saturdays a little something to get the anxiety level up a little! What a guy the 'Truth' is!!
truth, i believe
sarkisian would be more likely to go than petersen. boise states prospects for next year are brighter than those of any pac 10 school while sc's are brighter, although not by much, than washingtons.
Sark already said he has his 'dream job' at the UW
.....so that doesn't sound like he's leaving. Frankly, the UW job is a damn good job. He's got a real shot of bringing that program back to it's glory days. It's been a long time since Don James paced the sidelines and Sark has a shot at something special up there. Go Dawgs!!
Ya Ya Ya
If only your AD could schedule some games.........
Now you're talking Bleymaier again .....
.....I'm giving him a break until next week. He should have some good news by then on schedules. If not ... well, I'll be back.
Oh, for what it's worth
Herm Edwards is the next football coach at USC.......
tfunk, i hope you are correct
because his track record is poor. would love to see sc flounder for the next ten years.
agree on Herm broncos81.......
.......Herm Edwards has spent a grand total of 2 years in college football coaching at SJSU. If you will remember he started playing at UC Berkley, then quit and went to some Jr. college and then to San Diego St. for his senior year. Real stable college career.
I hope tfunk is right --- but I would doubt SC would hire the guy unless he's last on their list after being turned down by all others.
Who in the world would want to walk into USC right now? Only a coach desperate for a job. The ones that have solid positions right now (Petersen) would be foolish to take on that program right now. Mike Garrett has violation after violation waiting at SC's door. He's already gotten word on the Basketball violations under Floyd. (Mayo and the money violations) and now McNight (driving a new Range Rover around LA) and others. Where there is smoke there is fire and there's going to be a 5 alarm fire at the USC campus real soon. The new head coach will walk into a program with NO BOWL possibilities, less recruits and even less recruiters. Not good.
tfunk is just dreaming a little about Edwards. Although, Edwards just might be desperate for a gig so he'd take any job right now and they may get no takers at SC and end up giving Herm the helm. How great would that be for my Huskies??!!! Love it!!
Truth, you made
my point. Edwards will be the coach because no "high-end" college or pro coach will touch that job right now. There is only one reason a king resigns (and it ain't money), USC is toast. You are right, the future is bright for UW, Oregon (although I lost some respect for them with Portland State and Montana State), and UCLA.
Interesting question:
Will Barkley take a hike?
Send Ty Willingham to USC!!! Keep your hands of Petersen!
Being a Husky, I say hire Willingham!! Great guy!! Nice as they come!! And........he's available too!!
The names being floated are mostly names that are just too smart to take that job right now. Petersen, Patterson, Riley (who just agreed to a new deal through like 2019) and Ken Norton who resigned yesterday to go to Seatle with Carroll. So that leaves guys desperate for a gig or someone like Del Rio, Edwards or Gruden all with very questionable college experience. Coaching in college is a WHOLE lot different than the pros.
Nice try
truth! (trying to get SC to take your sloppy seconds, shame on you :)
Gruden is out.
Down to "a nobody", Edwards, or Del Rio
I still say Willingham is USC's man!!
What a great choice that would be! Think of it! Even BSU might get some recruits out of that deal. In Seattle he recruited some real dogs .... and I don't mean DAWGS. He's available!! Edwards and Del Rio? Either would be my second choice. Hire em!
Petersen isn't going anywhere...
unless the State Board of Education doesn't approve one of his contracts (which will NEVER happen). There is NO reason for him to take the USC job, except for ego or power, and he has that here in Boise/Idaho. He wouldn't even be the most powerful man on campus at USC, otherwise the entire state and he doesn't strike me as a man worried about his ego or power. His family has a better life here, he has and will continue to have more success here, he is now being able to compete for a BCS/National Championship game here and has a very easy path to such games here, etc. There really is no benefit to Petersen to leave BSU, so I would put that WAY down on the list of worries.
Not sure
it's gonna matter, the way things are playing out down there, some harsh sanctions are headed their way.
Quick question?
I just finished reading the story about the BSU men's basketball team and was just wondering. If this site is called "Bronco beat" why does it only discuss the football team? Where is the "love" for the basketball teams, the wrestling team (arguably as successful as the football team), the gymnastics team, the tennis team (which has one of the most passionate coaches I have ever seen), etc.? Aren't they Broncos too? Just wondering. I hear a lot of people say they are BSU fans and see a lot of flags and banners, but it seems the ONLY interest regarding BSU is the football team.
tomellen
So?
Just wondering...
I know that the other student-athletes pour their heart and soul into their sports and try to represent BSU to the best of their ability and take great pride in their efforts, accomplishments, and contributions to the university and just wondered why a blog titled, "Bronco Beat" doesn't take time to highlight Broncos besides those that play for the football team.
BSU are football fans because the BB program...
...just doesn't make the grade. Who wants to go watch mediocrity vs. less than mediocrity? Time for a change. Basketball oould be big time at BSU yet they just can't get it done.
Dumb ellen
This thread is titled about Petersen and his vote. Go to a basketball thread lead stupid.
Why don't you scold the others on this thread also apache64??
.........you aren't calling all the others on this thread 'stupid' ... if you'll make note not all this thread is about Petersen and his vote. Some people just have a need to put others down. Who elected you the Sheriff?
apache gets my vote for sheriff
even though i didn't know he was running. i volunteer to be the campaign manager.
I'm aware...
that this thread is titled, "Petersen ranks Broncos No. 2; Moore, Broncos set NCAA records". My point is that all the threads in this blog are about the football team. And actually, it's not that big of deal, so I will likely quit commenting. I just got to wondering why the other "Broncos" aren't covered in the "Bronco" beat? I already know the answer (because no one cares about any other Bronco sports but football), but just wanted to point out that the other student-athletes are "Broncos" too and are likely proud of it.
tomellen........I can agree with you....
.....I went searching for the BSU basketball thread. Can't find one. So your point is well taken.
Sorry, but the basketball team needs change. Big time. With Taco Bell Arena as a facility there is not excuse for not having a top flight program. Compare Boise to Spokage as a 'market' ... Gonzaga has been successful (and then some) in a very similar market. But in Spokane they have Eastern Washington and other sports teams that compete for the 'basketball dollar' yet they turn out team after team.
BSU's athletic department (Bleymaier in particular) seems to have 'bad scheduleitis' which afflicts those who want to play just weak sisters of the poor. If you are a top basketball recruit are you going to want to go to a school that play UC Bakersfield (and other lower tier programs) or do you want to go somewhere that you get to at least play against some of the better college basketball teams? Where are the Washingtons' the Oregons' the Gonzagas' on BSU's schedule. All make perfect sense because of the lower cost of travel but BSU would rather get a win against a cream puff than test a top program (....and as we've seen BSU can't always win against the cream puffs either!). Is your team better prepared by for the conference season by playing against a Washington or Gonzaga or by playing UC Bakersfield? That's a no brainer!
If they played just a couple of upper tiered programs I would but season tickets. Sorry, I can't get excited about watching BSU basketball when they play the schedules they keep drawing up. How many others would but tickets to see a quality opponent? I predict a lot.
It's sad really. Great facility, located in a great city to recruit to and they can't get the job done.
Graham is a very, very nice man. He's not a head basketball coach however. His contract should have never been renewed. Time for a major change.
Truth and tomellen
Truth, couldnt agree with you more. There are so many of us that would love to take our families to Bronco hoop games all season long. The quality of play, by the players and the coaching by the staff makes it very difficult. The schedule is just one small part. Players, for the most part, take on the personality of their coach. The team seems lethargic and very uninspired. Graham is a nice guy and you know what they say about nice guys.
And tomellen, please spare us AGAIN the holier-than-thou attitude. While Bronco alum and bandwagon fans hope all student athletes do well in everything they attempt, support doesnt mean being and commenting on every event. I dont think the Texas Longhorns Womens Swim Team gets 15k at each meet. Why do you continue to try and find ways to put down the Broncos and their fans? Does life really suck that bad for you?
Re:Texas Longhorns Womens Swim Team
I don't think that tomellen is dogging on BSU, and I'll back that up by doing a comparison of BSU swimming vs Texas swimming, since you brought up swimming
The Longhorns compete in one of the premier competitive aquatic facilies in the country and one of the top swimming and diving facilities in the world, while BSU competes at the YMCA and practices in a tiny outdated pool on campus. They don't even have their own locker room, but hey, who cares about swimming when we're talking football and basketball, right?
BSU has a long way to go if they want to compete in sports other than football, and since we're talking basketball, it would be in BSU's interest to offer $2 tickets and try to sell out Taco Bell Arena. That way, a packed house might inspire the team to play at a higher level, bnut something needs to be done to kickstart our basketball program along with all our other non-football programs.
Broncokid
What does having "the premier competitive aquatic facilities" have to do with what I said about drawing 15k fans to their meets? Just because you have awesome facilities doesnt mean you draw fans (case in point the Taco Bell Arena). The logic you are using seems to only validate what I am saying, not backing up tomellens post.
$2 tickets are not going to get fans in seats at the arena. Exciting athletic players who are well coached will. Players playing with purpose and energy will.
Facilities DO draw fans
The University of Texas, not only has an awesome aquatic facility, but they also have the #1 swim and dive team in the country, and while it doesn't seat 15k fans, it does sell out it's 2600 seats on a regular basis.
Fact of the matter is that crappy athletic programs don't typicaly play in state of the art, world class facilities, and Taco Bell Arena is far from being a world class venue. Sure, it's big, but bigger isn't always better.
$2 tickets would attract families, and especially those who have young children who play basketball, and $2 per head is better than no head at all, right? and heads liek to eat food and wash it down with drinks, so the $2 tickets would generate concession revenue AND cretae energy for the team to feed from.
Plus, there talk about we need a new coach, but it's not like it's a desirable job. BSU basketball needs a complete overhaul
I agree Bronco kid ... and disagree
Taco Bell is a hell of a lot better than many major programs facilities. We don't need a new facility, we need a new coach. It's a hell of a lot better facility than Hec Ed at the UW. It's on a par with Friel Court in Pullman, etc., etc. I could go on and on.
I DO think BSU could be very desirable. It has the facility, the city would back a solid team. This is a 'classic winners market'. Doesn't matter what the sport is the fact is in Boise, fans will back a winner.
Bleymaier needs to get a much better schedule for basketball. The team needs to PLAY SOMEBODY in the non-conference games. Crazy the way it is. I just can't get excited about the lame non con games BSU has. I would buy tickets if they just played somebody.
There are many young coaches out there that can do the job at BSU. Bleymaier needs to put the same intenisty into basketball as he does football in the hiring process. Doesn't he understand that basketball could be a great revenue stream for BSU. More money for all sports could be achieved if he just got busy and did something proactive about the BSU BB program.
As I said before, coach Graham is a very nice guy. He's just not a very good head coach.
Taco Bell Arena
fact of the matter is that if BSU basketball was doing well, people would come watch them play no matter what kind of facility they played in.
The key for Bley is to do whatever he needs to do to fill it to capacity, because people don't come out in droves to support medocrity.
but yeah..I agree with ya TTT
true BroncoKid.........
.....just look at the UW in Seattle. Hec Ed was/is an old pile of bricks, poor sight lines, etc. They hire a coach (Romar) who can not only coach but recruit too and all the sudden Husky basketball is a very 'hot' ticket in Seattle. They sell out almost every game with 10,000 fans. That's revenue -- and very good revenue too!
TTT
right.....Im sure the fact that the sonics bolted has nothing to do with UW filling the seats for BBall
That was entirely due the owner being a flaccid sea slug.
