SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Boise State football coach Chris Petersen has agreed to a new five-year contract that will run through the 2014 season, the school announced Friday at Fiesta Bowl media day.

The details are still being worked out. No monetary details were announced. The contract, agreed to in principle a week ago, also still must be approved by the State Board of Education, which meets Feb. 17-18 in Boise.

Boise State president Bob Kustra said this contract is more about years than dollars. Petersen already was scheduled to make $1.3 million in 2010. His existing contract, signed after the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, runs through 2011.

“Every place has their ceiling on what people can (pay) and we understand that at Boise State, but we also understand what a special place it is and what great people we work with,” Petersen said. “I think it’s a win-win for all sides.”

That includes the assistant coaches. Petersen negotiated considerations for them during the process.

“We want to keep this whole team together,” athletic director Gene Bleymaier said.

Petersen said this is a “nervous” time of year as he waits to see if anyone will steal one of his assistants. Wide receivers coach Brent Pease has interviewed for the offensive coordinator job at Arizona State, although Petersen said Friday, “I think the situation right now calls for us to hold onto him for a little bit longer.”

The latest negotiations will make it difficult for a coach to decide to leave, Petersen said.

“For them to go another place, it’s going to have to be somewhere special,” Petersen said.

Petersen is 48-4 in four seasons at Boise State, with three WAC titles and two Fiesta Bowl appearances. His buyout would have expired after the 2010 season so it was time for the school to extend his contract.

Other Fiesta Bowl news:

— Boise State freshman Brenel Myers will start at right tackle, Petersen said. It will be his second career start and first at tackle. And he faces TCU All-American end Jerry Hughes.

Myers was not brought to media day. Instead, the Broncos brought freshman Michael Ames, who started the first two games at right tackle and might play against TCU. Starter Garrett Pendergast is out with a broken ankle.

— Linebacker Hunter White likely will serve as the holder, the third different holder this year. Injured wide receiver and starting holder Austin Pettis could hold, Petersen said, but kicker Kyle Brotzman has become comfortable with White. Michael Choate, the backup holder, isn't likely to play.

— Pettis remains a game-time decision. Cornerback Brandyn Thompson said he thinks Pettis can get open even though he's hobbled by a fractured ankle. "If I had to place a bet, I'd say yeah," he said. "Let's hope so."

— TCU cornerback Rafael Priest, a four-year starter and All-Mountain West first-teamer, is somewhere between possible and doubtful with a foot injury. Priest said he thinks he’ll be able to contribute but he hasn’t practiced.

— TCU linebacker Daryl Washington contributed the first trash talk of the Fiesta Bowl with this line about Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore: “We’ll have our way with him come Monday night.”

Ho! Hum! who cares, just

Ho! Hum! who cares, just another over paid foolball coach who will run the first offer......

Hey Genius

Anyone who knows football understands that Coach Pete is grossly underpaid. Look at his record. He could leave here and make TWICE what he makes at BSU.

why bother

Don't bother trying to explain. Idiots won't listen even when you break it down to them in any format!

I'll take your bait

I care. As do at least 35,000 other people in Boise. Yeah Div I football coaches are well paid if they're good, and Peterson is one of the best. By Boise standards, he makes great money. By Div I football coach standards, he's underpaid. His success as a coach brings in a ton of money for the university for academics and other programs, not just football. Go Broncos!

If he had done that, he

If he had done that, he would have been gone a long time ago. Know your facts before you spout off with nothing better to say.

Coach's Pay

BLKSHOE-
Happy New Year to you too!
Go play troll somewhere else!!!

bikeshoe

If you did not care why did you take the time to read and post a comment? Must be a sad life you have.

Go BSU!!
Thanks for staying Coach Pete

New K for Coach P

Coach Pete is smart to get that new deal before the big game . You know what they say in Texas ? You mess with the frogs , you get the horns .

In Idaho they say,

contract starts with a C.

I didn't know 'contract' started with a Big c - Who'd a cnown

You know what they say in Moscow? You mess with the Vandals, you get to buy the beer.

I think it should be brnshoe.

Like a midair collision with a tugboat

And the first offer

has already come and gone.........

bring it

Bring on the smack talk TCU... give our boys more of a reason to shut you toads up!

What?

“We’ll have our way with him come Monday night.” Where are they from Alabama?

Queue the banjo music...

academics

This is myth. Football has done squat for academics at Boise State University.

take a look around

Walk the campus and look at the new academic facilities that were built from football money. Equipment in the class room… football money. Labs for the biology dept…football money. Computer programs for the engineering program…football money!!!! any questions?

do more research

This is part of an article of where the money went for the last Fiesta Bowl we were in. This is what the academics got for one game.

Last time, the athletic department pumped its $2.2 million in Fiesta Bowl money into construction of the Stueckle Sky Club. The university took $500,000 for academics - paying for music scholarships, conference travel by Honors College students and the creation of the Presidential Civic Leadership Scholarship. The latter provided 30 renewable scholarships based on academics and civic involvement to first-year, in-state students.

Erroneous

Erroneous on all counts. No money from the Fiesta Bowl went to academics.

Just thinking

hmmm...build more seats = more money for BSU? Playing in a big game with the nation watching, advertising their college could possibly attract more students? The AD probably could name many more reasons why it's good for academics.

Baloney.... Read my

Baloney.... Read my statement below..

Great News

Would it really be unsportsman like if someone tapped on Daryl's shoulder pad after the game and said "You can have it your way at Burger King but not with us"?
I thought it's just part of game, but always keep your helmet on.

daryl probably wouldn't make the connection

anyway.

BSU Biology Department???

LMFAO!!!!!!! Patmac1 the bsu biology department is the biggest joke of a science department in the country..... HAHA don't make me laugh that hard again!!!!! Oh and what campus do you speak of? I see a football stadium and like two buildings...... Go visit a real campus and you will understand how dumb you really sound!

jg49er...no sir!

Follow this link and read about BSU Biology professor and how he has freed prisoners with DNA test. These tests are possible from equipment used in BSU biology dept and other universities. BSU is very fortunate to have a professor of this magnitude. So before you come out swinging like a know-it-all, do your research? I’m sure the guy who was freed from prison will disagree with you sir, I’m sure he is enjoying the holidays with his family compliments of Boise State. Have a nice day!

jg4whiner returns

and continues to speak drivel. how is that lawnmowing program going that you are working on at the little school on the hill in the middle of a wheat field? such a loser.

vandork bravado

Here come the cockroaches. Their 'signature' D1 win against a lowly 7-6 MAC team. Wow, how impressive.

And like the Yardley report told us about the fools up north, they'll spin this to abnormal proportions to feed their 'false sense of acheivement'. Bravo vandals, playing to your strength.

EagleMan?

I would shut my mouth if I were you. TCU is going to destroy the Broncos and then you won't be able to incessantly talk about the Fiesta Bowl. At least Idaho took care of their end of the deal. 1 win in the WAC this bowl season no matter who their opponent was. Also, what is BSU's record in bowl games recently? 1 for 5 the last 5 years???????? Idaho is 2 and 0 overall! Stop hating and focus on your own game.

JFS

The only one hating is you. You backed into a bowl game against a lousy opponent and barely won. You probably should just shut up. When your vandals go undefeated 4 times in 6 years feel free to run your mouth. The Broncos pounded Bowling Green at Bowling Green and put 60 plus on you guys playing their scrubs. And how the Hell is Idaho 2-0 overall in bowl games better than the Broncos? THE BRONCOS GO TO A BOWL EVERY YEAR! Tools like you are pathetic...

JLandon

Simmer down buddy.... pump the brakes. No need to get your G.E.D. in a bunch. Good for your Bronco's. I agree that they get to a bowl game every year. Great!!!!!! Winning the game is a different story. Who cares if you go if you can't win? Me pathetic? I think you may need a reality check. I am not the one reliving the only bowl win in half a decade over and over again at Walmart.

Reality check

Who cares if you go to a BCS Bowl game if you dont win? Where did you go to school? Let me say it again cus you are about as bright as a monkey. 4 undefeated seasons in 6 years. A preseason Top 5 ranking in 2010. Ya, I say we are all living in the past. Id slit my wrists if my team had its best year in a decade going 8-5.

PS The GED comment was funny like in 1994 and the Walmart thing? Really?

So, it's better NOT to make it to a bowl game?

Honestly?

jfs is confused

using your logic it is better to get to a bowl twice in 10 years and win than to go every year and lose as many as you win. oh yeah, pump the brakes. your football team is so awesome. give it a rest.

Dude..

Seriously, you need to shut it. I can't believe how cocky you are about winning the H-bowl..very typical. Fans like you are the reason most BSU fans don't give you more credit, includnig me now. BSU is 5-4 overall in bowl games. So clamp down, congrats on the win, now move along. I suggest you get off the computer before your parole officer finds out....

Jlandon and eagleman stroke it to the 2007 fiesta bowl dvd!

I bet you get off to your lover Ian Johnson!!!!

Well.....I can see the 'discussion' is ......

deep in the toilet today.

Glad to hear Petersen and BSU got a deal done. A coach is paid what he's worth. If an 'elite' program comes along and wants Petersen there is no way in hell that BSU will be able to afford to keep him. On the other hand, if Petersen is the kind of guy I think he is there are plenty of more important things in life than money. Everybody wants to compare his salary to other big time programs. Not fair. IF he were the head man at an 'elite' program, that's different. BSU has serious limitations on what they can pay him. So if you want to always compare him to others based on wins and loses and rankings, that's not ever going to be the case here. The pressure, the amount of money raised by an 'elite' program and the expectations don't even compare. I know some would like to say "Well, he's a top ten coach so he should be making top ten money." Not the case, sorry. A major BCS football program makes MILLIONS more per year than BSU will ever enjoy. BSU's stadium limits the amount that the University can make. A major BCS program has a stadium that seats more than twice BSU's stadium. That's twice the income. Petersen should be paid in the top ten of coaches by percentage of income the program brings in. If Alabama (for example) brings in 100 million and Saban is making 4 million, that's 4%. Compare the percentages. If Petersen wants to make the same as Saban, Meyer, B. Kelly, etc. then he'll have to go somewhere else someday. I think we all understand that one.

Let's all remember that college football is a business. Big business. Petersen is a CEO. CEO's get paid on financial performance.

I have no idea just exactly how much football programs bring in each year around the country. But I would imagine that if you compared the salaries of head coaches to the revenues generated by a program you would see what I'm talking about. There is a correlation between the two. In that -- I would IMAGINE that Petersen is doing okay. If BSU can increase the size of the stadium AND sell it out plus move up in conference to the MWC someday, those would all impact how much BSU could and should pay Petersen.

Off the soap box for now........

TTT

What is the deal? the last two days you ahve been making legit logical statements! I dont get it.... Are you finally taking those meds?
Cmon...... Say something stupid just so we know someone didn't kill you and take your computer.

LOL!! Potato2 ... you're just figuring me out!

For some it just takes a while Potato. Pretty soon people come around and see the logic I use. I know that I'm a little deep for some (perhaps you?) and it takes a while to absorb the breadth of knowledge I'm trying to distribute. But I'm a patient man who keeps an eye open for those who have issues with comprehension. Don't worry. At least you're not lighting your hair on fire anymore everytime I post something that is over your head initially. Stay with it. It will come. I know it's painful to try to suck up everything I say but eventually it will come to you. The skys will open, the sun will come out and you'll say "DAMN!" he knows his stuff!!

(NOTE: a little sarcasm used above)

Petersen's Salary

To TheTruthTeller:

Well said!

To Everyone Else:

Petersen likes Boise!

"The only thing that I always say is, 'never say never,'" Petersen said. "But this is a great place, I really, truly mean that and we love it here. My family loves it here. I think a lot of our coaches like it here and so I do think this is a hard place to beat."

I believe that he would leave for an open Cal job. Tedford is on thin ice.,.. But Cal is pretty much it.

Out!

one can never say petersen wouldn't leave

but, cal? berkeley? not feelin it. texas? maybe, but that job is not likely to open.

Agreed on Cal....

...not Petersen. He's not going to Berkley ever. I not sure there is any job in the PAC 10 that he would want with the exception of maybe USC. And that one I'm not even sure about.

Coach Pete will not leave unless it is to an 'elite' program....

.....and then maybe he won't even leave. The elite BCS programs are a whole lot different than BSU. At BSU coach Pete is a very busy guy but still has time to spend with his family and doing a few things he enjoys. An elite BCS job is 24/7 -- every waking hour is taken by someone who wants a piece of you. Maybe when his kids are grown and life is different he might want a challenge like that .... but just look at Urban Meyer. Is it worth it?

Wants wrong with making 1.3 million and living in Boise? Unless it's a big time program -- really big -- I don't think he bails. Now, if BSU can't get the job done on the stadium and increase season tickets sales, etc. that's a whole other issue. If BSU wants to keep Petersen around then they've got to keep stepping up. There is a lot of building yet to do as far as being able to bring in more revenue. They must schedule better teams that sell tickets. And that's not Petersen's job.

Great post TT...

Great post TT...

Here we go again!

From what I can see, if you want an education, go to Uof I or Idaho State, if you want to be a Bronco bustin' idiot or cheerleader, go to BroncoBillie's Ranch in Boise.

Again....

Two state schools in Idaho arguing about acedemics is a little like two homeless men arguing over who has the better bridge. They are pretty equal, the difference being that BSU is a bigger asset to idaho and the treasure valley as a whole than UI.

Outside of Treasure Valley - BSU don't mean squat

Tater2:

Maybe you haven't heard, the borders of Idaho do not end at Horseshoe Bend, Council, and Mountain Home.

Probably, the majority of Idahoans (less the Treasure Valley folks - even then - maybe) really do not care one whit about BSU nor the Bronco football team.

As for BSU being a bigger asset to the State of Idaho, I really doubt that, very much.

My friend, you keep forgetting about the factual distinction between the two universities (BSU and Idaho); being that Idaho has a place reserved for it's preeminence in the State of Idaho Constitution, and the United States Congress by virtue of Idaho being the Land Grant university for the State of Idaho, a condition of Congressional approval of statehood.

It's true, no argument here, BSU is indeed a benefit to the community of Boise, as you have posted previously. But, so are the College of Southern Idaho, North Idaho College, the College of Western Idaho, Lewis Clark State College, and Idaho State University, to their respective communities.

Just because you have a great football team - and I readily agree you do - don't get so lost in the ozone of your National College Football Ranking to believe BSU is somehow singularly sgnificant, to the State of Idaho as a whole.

See this is where you

Get tainted. Population= people and people mean everything. Need medical attention from a nurse...thank boise state, need a finance guru thank BSU, however need a divorce attorney, thank UI Need a drunk alcholholic thank UI need a famer thank UI. Actually that last one is a good thing and that is What UI forgets. Its ag roots. Funney how thier most promising and sucessful programs are in the biology and Ag field. yet aren't those bubbus up there supposed to be superior to us city folk. BSu helps more people because it has more people graduate from it, and it serves more people in the community. while it may not be more important to Boise as ISU is to Pokey it is more important to the state as a whole because liek it or not with out the TV the state is toast. Almost ALL Comerce and revenue come form here. We could go on and on but ultimately BSU has the cash and the populus and that my friend is what counts.

He's ready for the Funny Farm - Gettin' real close

Tater2:

All the nurses I know, in Magic Valley are usually from either the College of Southern Idaho, Idaho State University, or Utah schools. Same thing with Eastern Idaho. Nurses up north usually are from LCSC or Spokane schools. Nurses in Treasure Valley usually come from BSU - I will grant you that. Idaho does not have a nursing school.

My finance guru is a Vandal - so is my banker. The manager of our local Coop is a Vandal. My personal physician is a Vandal. Our Sheriff is a Vandal as well as the entire staff of our county prosecutor's office. 2 of our 3 county commissioners are Vandals. Our County Clerk is a Vandal, as is our county treasurer. I could go on and on, but to no avail, as you have your mind made up that the sun in Idaho sets and rises on BSU.

Happily married so don't need a divorce attorney - but if I did, it would be a Vandal.

Don't need a drunk alcoholic.

Raised on a farm - UoI is an ag school and has a longstanding Ag Extension presence in every one of Idaho's 44 counties (part of the Land Grant status thingy) and all of the 4-H programs throughout our state.

UoI has not forgotten it's agricultural roots. It is proudly an ag school and very much involved statewide and expanding as we speak (apparently you are not aware of the 34 million dollar dairy research facility currently in the process in Magic Valley). Many field research facilities are dotted throughout our state.

It is not surprising that Idaho's most promising programs are in the biology and ag fields - that is what Idaho does - biology and ag. That's why it is a Land Grant school.

The Teasure Valley is important to the Treasure Valley but, there is a whole undiscovered State of Idaho, that apparently you have not explored. many hundreds of Idahoans live outside of Treasure Valley, the majority of which hold anything Treasure Valley, in contempt (almost, along the same lines as 'Californians'). Apparently, you are not a well travelled man in your own state.

I believe you are the one who is arrogant and exceedingly pompous as well as apparently, delusional.

Come on Dude, just swallow those meds when your home health worker tells you to.

I think you are sliping past the point of no return, buddy, I really do.

I will say a prayer for you tonight before I go to sleep.

If this paper, or this valley, or what's

happening with BSU football isn't something you care about, you sure do spend a lot of time spouting off in the BOISE newspaper website. Why don't you read the moscow-pullman daily news or your Magic Valley Times. Stay in touch with all of your high and mighty Vandal professional buds. We'd rather not listen to you. I think all that Simplot stink down there in your promised land has rotted your brain.
