The Boise State football team’s late-season rash of injuries has extended into bowl preparation.
Sophomore right tackle Garrett Pendergast sustained a fractured ankle when a teammate fell on him during a recent bowl practice, coach Chris Petersen said Monday.
Pendergast will miss the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 4 against TCU. He is the third player sidelined with a fracture in the same bone in about five weeks.
“It was a freak thing,” Petersen said.
Pendergast likely will be replaced by freshman Michael Ames, junior Matt Slater or freshman Brenel Myers — or perhaps a combination of the three.
Ames was the season-opening starter at right tackle. Slater was the season-opening starter at left tackle and he started at both tackle spots last year. Myers is the backup right guard and a player coaches think has a promising future.
“We’ll have some answers,” Petersen said, “but it’s hard. It’s frustrating.”
The Broncos hope to get wide receivers Tyler Shoemaker and Austin Pettis — two of their three starting receivers — back in the lineup for the Fiesta Bowl, but neither is a sure thing.
Shoemaker (hernia), who was expected to return, has been limited in practice.
“He hasn’t quite made the progress we were hoping he would,” Petersen said.
As for Pettis, Petersen offered a ray of hope.
“Austin’s going to be right down to the wire,” he said. “… I think in his mind, he’s playing.”

Whatever can go wrong.....
will go wrong. Not good!
Man...all these injuries the
Man...all these injuries the took in the latter half of the season are a bad omen.
Arg!!
TCU is no pushover team and we need all the guys that got us to the Bowl game to play in the Bowl game.
More than 50 Bronco Alums Live in the Heart of TCU Country
TCU is a great team and you're right. They won't be a pushover team whatsoever, and according to Lyle Smith, who I talked to the other day, said that TCU does everything right, and is a much better team than the one we played last year, and that he believe that this game will be much more difficult than our game against Oklahoma, and I agree.
Got my Campus Update email a little bit ago: "More than 50 Bronco Alums Live in the Heart of TCU Country" which is a pretty good read if you have the time.

On a side note, If we rely too much on our returning and injured players, we're looking a players who are not 100%, therefore what we need are not the guys who helped get us there, but instead we need the guys who are 100% to step up and bring their A game, but our coaches need to bring their A game as well, because BSU isn't used to playing from behind, and I think that we'll be behind a good portion of the game and engaged in a game of catch up, therefore, we can't commit fumbled snaps, missed FG's, or boneheaded playcalling from Harsin, because unlike most of our opponents this year, TCU will make us pay for every single miscue we make, so hopefully, we'll come out and our boys will end the season just as they started it when they shut down Oregon, because this TCU team could be the best team that BSU has ever faced, but it's certianly going to be a dandy to watch
Coach em up
pete! You can do it!!

Why don't you answer the posts on the other thread about the military tickets? Cripe???? Where are the tickets and who is getting them????
Military
Sorry, didn't see those posts. ... I'll look into that tomorrow.
depth and injuries
is the primary reason why critics say BSU would only finish 2nd, 3rd, or 4th in a BCS conference. I'm hoping for the best when its time for the Fiesta Bowl.
Critics
Critics would be wrong again; if BSU played in a BCS Conference they would be able to recruit better depth.
very true.......
the better the conference, especially if it's one that gets BCS AQ status......the better the recruiting pool. Although, BSU doesn't do too bad the way it presently is but with a better conference you could expect a larger pool.
If BSU would find BETTER STAFF that don't break the same bones?
Pete keeps saying they are working on it but it's like the damned Western Front.
One or more of the staff is jack--- and needs to be replaced.

every day.
GO BRONCO NATION! HAVE A GREAT TIME AND A GREAT GAME.

What's the deal with foreignoregonian
Does everyone just ignore him? Does anyone know what he's talking about? Is he Coach Pete in disguise?
Fill me in, anyone?
i have pondered that
many times. random comments. off the wall. sometimes humorous. maybe it's over my head.
I have a feeling he's had one more trauma than me.
Soon someone's going to ask... what's the deal with Omikey?
If you have seen
"Hangover", foreignoregonian is the dude in the beard.....he's just kinda there.
Well he's just fine with me.
At least in this environment we don't have to worry about restraining orders?
Good night everyone.
Still think we'll win...
Long time ago, at the beginning of the season I read a report that said Boise State is in a rebuilding year. Hell of a rebuild if you ask me. First string get's you to the dance. You depth chart keeps you there.
We are talking...
....about the guy protecting Moore's blind side, are we not ? Time to step up once again Broncos.
tougher schedule...
Has anyone else noticed the irony. The haters are always saying "if BSU played a tough team week in and week out like the (name your BCS conference) does they.... (wouldn't have the depth to survive, or whatever other excuse is offered).
We played Oregon and didn't have the injuries we had against the WAC teams. Must be playing Oregon weakened a lot of bones that only later became broken. Maybe we should play softer Pac-10 teams more often!
frog
I bleed Blue & Orange, however, I'm not blinded by it, and I will agree with the ctitics who claim that we would struggle with a BCS conference schedule, and sure, we beat Oregon in the very first game of the season, but what if instead of playing Miami of Ohio teh following week, we had to do what Oregon did and travel to Purdue, and then take on an 18th ranked Utah team, followed by a 6th ranked Cal team, an later facing a #5 ranked UCS team followed by Stanford with their legit Heisman candidate RB who ran for 3 TD's, and 228 yards.
Keep in mind that we struggled mid way through our season with UC Davis, Tulsa, and LaTech and just weren't able to put them away as we should have been able to do, and I will admit that we tend to play at the same intensity level of our opponents and get stuck in ruts where we trade 3 and outs with them for far too long before we finally get the mojo flowing, so as far as week in and week out in a BCS conference...who knows how we'd do. I'm sure we'd have a respectable record, but it sur as heck wouldn't come easy.
La Tech
almost couldn't field a team for thier final games.......seriously.
phoney Oregonian
Is a German import living out by Jordan Valley chasing sheep and sheep ranchers. He has been in this country, I think he said, about 40yrsm, and seems to still struggle with the American idea of humor and the english language. He believes he is quite witty? Just ignore him like most do.
