Texas field goal likely puts Boise State in BCS; TCU-Boise State in Fiesta creating buzz

Breathe easy, Boise State fans.

Texas hit a do-or-die field goal on the final play of the game Saturday night to beat Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game.

The kick likely put Texas in the national championship game and Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. If Nebraska had won, the Broncos might have gotten snubbed by the Bowl Championship Series.

“It’s a foregone conclusion that (the Broncos are) in,” WAC commissioner Karl Benson said. “It’s just a matter of where they’re playing and who they’re playing.”

Boise State players said they expect a BCS bid — but won't relax until they hear their name called during the BCS selection show at 6 p.m. Sunday on Fox. The Broncos got left out last year with an undefeated record.

“We’ll kind of have butterflies in our stomachs waiting till it’s announced,” junior defensive end Ryan Winterswyk said.

Said sophomore safety George Iloka: “It would hurt — I’m not going to lie about it — it would hurt if we don’t get a BCS bowl again.”

There's quite a bit of speculation — particularly among the national writers — that Boise State will face TCU in the Fiesta Bowl. That would give the Fiesta a battle of unbeatens with the winner likely finishing No. 2.

The Broncos, who lost 17-16 to TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl last year, say they'd welcome a rematch.

"That would be cool," Winterswyk said. "From what I've seen of them on TV they look just as good as last year, maybe even better. We're kind of the same way."

TCU will finish ahead of Boise State in the BCS standings to earn the automatic bid. The Horned Frogs jumped the Broncos in the middle of the season.

"We have tremendous respect and admiration for TCU," Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. "The bottom line is they beat us the last time we played so we don't have a lot to say."

We'll have much more in Sunday's edition of the Idaho Statesman.

SWEET!!!

GO BRONCOS!!!!!! You can DO IT!!!

What a game!

Neb. D must be the best in the nation. I think McCoy was sacked 11 times tonight. The Broncos are off to the Fiesta against a POS Big 10 team. I think they will handle Iowa/Penn St. no problem. They are both garbage as well as Ohio State.

Opportunity Lost for BSU!

Coach Pete could have showcased K. Moore today and received much national publicity, maybe even a Heisman invitation. Instead we ran the ball. Why?

Hahaha... A QB showcase/Heisman invite by rolling NMSU?

Can you hear the phone ringing? It's reality calling.

Tebow lost, Keenum lost, McCoy looked terrible, Spiller lost, ..

I not saying Moore has any chance to win, I'm saying put yourself in a position to take advantage of the situation. If Moore was one of the five invited to the ceremony, it would have been a huge recruiting tool -- opportunity lost! Think!!

because it worked and ran

because it worked and ran time off the clock in a blowout game

That's why Petersen is the coach and you're not!

Why on earth would you risk injury just for stats? That's ALL that would have been achieved. Coach Pete knows full well that Moore was/is not going to win the Heisman. Pad Moore's stats for what? A trip to NYC? It's appears that Moore had little chance of the trip anyway. A trip for an injury to what is the prime engine of your offense? I think we want Moore in the bowl game and not on the sideline nursing an injury, don't you?

Tetpilot

He ran the ball because we don't need to get anybody else hurt. Kellen has plenty of time to win the Heisman and IMO I think his best shot is next year as well as next year being BSU's best shot at a Nat'l Championship if they can win out.

He could also blow a knee....

in game 1 next year and be out for the season -- play for the present not the future.

Well, at least you're humble?

Jesus, chill out.

That comment was directed toward swanpig

FYI

Some GUY

So a vandal tells a Bronco not to think about Heismans or National Championships. Maybe being ranked #105 in the nation is closer to winning it all then being #6 in the country.
As always, worry about your own team before you start telling Bronco fans how to root for their team. Jesus, chill.

MACK BROWN SHOULD BE

MACK BROWN SHOULD BE FIRED!!!!!!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! CALL THE @#$% TIMEOUT AND KICK THE ##%% FIELD GOAL!!!!!!!!

I don't know if Mack Brown

I don't know if Mack Brown should be fired but what was so sacred about the time out that they couldn't use it with just a few seconds remaining? That was almost Chris Ault like in its stupidity.

Mack Brown fell sound asleep......

He looked like he was in a daze. I was screaming at the televison ... McCoy said afterward that he knew how much time was left when they came to the line of scrimage (15 sec.) and that his line had some signals crossed, thus it took 9-10 seconds just to snap the ball. If I would have been Mack Brown, when that clock reaached 10 seconds I would have been tackling the side judge screaming TIME OUT!!! But.......he stood there and ALMOST cost BSU a shot at the BCS. I really don't think BSU would have gotten a bid without a Texas win.

The way it was, that kick barely got in.....BSU by a foot!!

No doubt that Nebraska has one hell of a defense. But their offense sucks.

TCU/Alabama

Congrats to the BSU players on the inevitable BCS berth. Now the real question...should TCU or Texas play for the national title? I would put my soul on TCU/Alabama being the real deal this year.

TetPilot

Come on now..... The Broncos NEED like nothing else to win this years bowl game. The rest of the season doesn't matter unless they do this. So yes, he made the right decision. Pull the starters and hope for that Pettis is back for the bowl game (although I don't think it will matter against a Big 10 opponent).

You are missing the point......

Burroughs, Potter and Kirby needed some game experience today so they can better fill in for Pettis if needed. It is for their development as much as for Kellen's stats that Pete should have filled the air with footballs for 3 full quarters. Moore could be pulled in the 4th Qtr -- that's fine, but give those young recievers some quality time with Kellen -- they may need it next month!

Tetpilot

Football is a team sport especially the way coach pete coaches. With your recievers out it is probably a good idea to run the ball safely get the sure win. If you don't you risk the interceprions and incompletions you will inevitably have with a hodge podge recieveing corps.

The Aggies are the worst team in football....

if you can't develop your "hodge podge receiving corps" against them.....?! I just thought Pete had a great opportunity to kill 2 birds today -- get Moore 5 TD's, big publicity, adding to his stats (particularly in view of how bad the other QB's looked today) and get the young recievers much needed reps with Kellen. Again, those recievers may be needed big time next month!

Its called a month

of practice. Not a month of kirby and TY to get hurt again. Geesh. But you would be a much better coach. Where's your million dollar paycheck?

Thank God coach Pete and Kellen don't have the selfish

Attitude that tetpilot does on his fantasy coaching team.

Selfish is wanting to ......

make yourself look good to voters and computers in a flawed system that determines who plays for big money and who doesn't. You either work the system or the system works you. Rather than hire a PR firm, make your case on the field. But then again, we just wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings or grab something that didn't rightfully belong to us. Better to let others decide our fate. Get a grip people, it's called competition - lead, follow, or get out of the way!

Why not give Coughlin some

Why not give Coughlin some time at qb? What if Kellen is injured, or gets sick or something? The 2's need as much time on the field as possible. And the young receivers were on the field all during that time.

Yeah, talk about needing some practice....

Coughlin. We may need him someday and he needs to be much sharper. plus our running game ALWAYS needs to be fine tuned. Our recievers will be just fine. As long as they can get and stay healthy

BCS

Instead of complaining so much about the BCS system, which sucks, consider what a playoff system might really do to our young athletes. Two or three more weeks of play means more injuries, and broken opportunities. Look how many seniors got to play in the last game, and how many starters are already injured on a 13 game schedule. Just saying. The system sucks, but do we wanna put a bunch more games in front of our student athletes with lives still ahead of them?

Here's my take, and it is uninformed, as I care little for sports but love Bronco football. I am a Broncos fan since living across the street from Mike Holton in the late 60's (yes, his record finally fell this year). Looking from my Idaho ill informed perspective, I just see a bunch of big money jerks, sucking lattes, not letting us play the "big" teams, and then saying we have a crappy schedule. The folks in the big conferences cannot possibly imagine that a building program (and Coach Pete, an incredible, amazing build it has been so far) might not come from the ACC, SEC, or whatever wink wink cash in your pocket league is considered big time.

I will be most upset if we end up at the "cute" table with the other non-latte contender TCU at the Fiesta. We're both good enough to take Florida, or Iowa, or whatever.

Everyone seems to know everything about how bad BSU would do, until we get the chance, then the east coast sports writers just say it's happenstance.

Whatever. This non-sports fan yet Bronco's fan loves what Coach, and Kyle (and wonderful family), and Moore, and Brotzsman, and Pettis, and OMG so many other good players have done for this city, our university, and our civic pride. If the pros don't see you for what you are, here's one Boisean that welcomes and honors our wonderful grads and students, and hope you stay to make our fair city even richer with your pride, hope, team dedication, and amazing personal growth.

Go Broncos!

When K. Moore Graduates, BSU should offer him a coaching job!

The day Moore graduates, OR BEFORE, BSU should offer the guy a coaching position. He's that 'football smart'! That's one sure way to keep him in town!

Marish

Your take is well informed, indeed!

Hey pilot

Moore threw for 272 yards in less than 3 quarters and overthrew 3 deep balls to Young. I really don't see your issue.

no kidding

amazingly, 100% of the football world feels coach petersen is doing a fine job. everyone except tet and the haters.

Both BSU and TCU deserve

a shot at a BCS AQ Team. Anything less is a BCS diss.

please, not TCU!

I think TCU would be the best opponent BUT...
TCU A) should be playing for the NC (anyone really think they could not have beaten Texas? Or Florida or 'Bama?)
B) They deserve, by way of competing undefeated for the entire season, to play a high profile game - as do the Broncos
C) The Broncos would be snubbed again if they play TCU (regardless of outcome) by AGAIN not having the national exposure they deserve by playing an AQ team (and please, let's not even think about Cincy! They're lower on the BCS totem pole than we are).

Congratulations Broncos !

It warms my heart to know that there are still people out there that think they know how to better run the Boise State team than this coaching staff. Thanks sooooo much for the insight. I personally don't know what I would do without your second guesssing. I hope coach Petersen is paying you well, (he is paying you, isn't he) ?

IF WE PLAY

Tcu in the fiesta I'm probablly going to cancel my reservations that I have in Glendale! I love BSU and it shouldn't matter but this would be a huge slap in both programs faces. I just hope the fiesta realizes that the only people that would be interested in that game are from Idaho and Texas. Please Fiesta bowl officials don't let it happen.

NO! Not TCU vs. Boise State!!!!!!

The BCS would love it ... two non BCS programs playing each other. No good at all. First of all, the national television draw would not be good. Sorry, just fact. Not too many on the east coast, where the largest concentration of 'eyeballs' are would be real excited about watching TCU against BSU. It doesn't matter that they are both undefeated, at this point neither is going to win a national title. Both TCU and BSU MUST play a BCS conference school so they can get the recognition they both deserve. The east coast based 'talking heads' would give a TCU-BSU game a couple of 'courtesy' mentions and then move right back to talking up the 'big boys' games. I don't care if the winner would end up #2 -- #2 is about the same as #8 when all is said and done and those 'experts' know it. If TCU and BSU can play and beat teams from an 'elite BCS confernece' it goes a WHOLE LOT further than a win over a non-BCS school like BSU or TCU. Just fact.

Truth

We seldom agree on anything but everything youve posted today is right on. I sure hope it isnt TCU in the Fiesta. Why pit the two non AQ schools against each other? Theres only one reason if your the BCS.

Truth

I can no longer say "I never agree" with you. Good post

Marginalize the 2 Non-BCS programs

Wouldn't two Non-BCS team wins in the BCS BOWLS against THE BCS ELITE expose the fake privilege.. as two Non-BCS teams make the cut for the first time and are then marginalized by the BCS in a attempt to protect its IMAGE by playing them off against each other. It's just soooooo transparent!

Truthteller is right

He hit the nail on the head. Face it, even with all the success TCU and BSU have had this year and in previous years, most of the nation still sort of looks down on us as inferiors. TCU (or BSU for that matter) would benefit more and get a lot more recognition by beating Florida, Penn St, or Iowa than by beating a fellow non-AQ (even if that non-AQ is higher ranked). And personally, for me as a fan, I will not be that excited for the "rematch"...and I won't even consider going to the game.

LIKE I

said earlier if they schedule TCU vs BSU in the fiesta I'm canceling my reservation fro my hotel. I would do it becuase I would not want to support this crap of a system. I truely love BSU and hope they would do well but I couldn't support the BCS doing this, to quite the critics and protect elitism.

I feel

U. Hey any regular season game I'm there for the BlueandOrange but this crap has got to stop. Not going to support the F-in Fiesta this year. They chose wrong. Saw that game last year but this year Brotz makes one of his field goals and wins.
