Gear Tuesday: Headlamp for kids
Kids love flashlights from the moment they are old enough to press the switch on.
Well, Black Diamond has a headlamp designed for kids. It's the Wiz. It's not only smaller than adult headlamps, it's tested to standup to kid-type abuse.
We gave our five-year-old grandson one for his recent birthday and he loved it. It will be great for his camping trips, but also for having it nearby in the bedroom for nighttime reading or just shining it on the ceiling.
It costs $18.95 and can be found online or at REI.
The headlamp features:
- An elastic band that has pull-away fittings so if a child catches it on a limb or door handle it simply comes apart under the pressure.
- The power of the two LED bulbs is set at a mid-brightness level so kids don't unintentionally blind themselves—or their parents.
- It features two modes, on and strobe, operated from a single switch.
- It automatically turns off after one hour to save battery life, in case a child falls asleep with it on or forgets it lost under the covers.
- It operates on two AAA batteries, which are included.

Good pick
Excellent gizmo for the kids. I'll pass it along to my friends who are grandparents as a holiday gift idea.
