Outdoors monday morning quarterbacking: Weather changes
| Share |
It was calm and glassy when we set up our decoys on C.J.Strike Reservoir over the weekend for duck hunting. In fact, it was too glassy.
In the first hour of hunting nothing was flying. It was pretty quiet. But things can turn on a dime when it comes to weather.
Waves started kicking up. Whitecaps appeared out of nowhere and our decoys started being pushed away by the strong waves. The weights on the decoys couldn't hold them in place.
It seemed like the whole reservoir started boiling.
Needless to say, you've always got to watch and anticipate the weather this time of the year. Strong storm fronts seem to appear out of nowhere.
We packed up without firing a shot, threw on the lifejackets and hunkered down for a bouncy, wave-hopping ride back to the boat ramp.
That's late fall hunting in Idaho, whether you get hit by a surprise snowstorm in the Owyhees while chukar hunting, on the Snake River while goose hunting or on a late-season deer hunt in the mountains.
Keep a close eye on the weather when you're out there, and be ready to head home in a moment's notice.
