Boise State fans should be pulling for Hawkins, Colorado on Thursday

How wide open is the Fiesta Bowl when it comes to finding teams for this year’s game?

Consider that the bowl is not sending representatives to any football games this weekend. Part of the reason is because there are very few good games to attend. But uncertainty is the other reason.

“Things are up in the air. In this case probably more so than any other year,” said Fiesta Bowl spokesman Tony Alba. “It doesn’t make sense to go out and do anything. We’ll regroup on Sunday.”

The Fiesta Bowl is likely to need two at-large teams to fill its game because if undefeated Texas wins out, the Longhorns will be heading to the national championship game.

Alba said the Fiesta Bowl is considering Oklahoma State, TCU, Boise State, several teams from the Big Ten and a host of other possibilities.

Oklahoma State could be the biggest obstacle to Boise State getting selected for a BCS game. The Cowboys have made just one appearance in the Fiesta Bowl, a 16-6 victory against BYU in 1974 so their fans are no doubt itching to get to a BCS game.

EDIT: As an astute reader points out, the Fiesta Bowl was not a BCS game in 1974 as the BCS did not exist.

“They would be attractive. We have a relationship, a very strong relationship with the Big 12,” Alba said. “Any time there’s a Big 12 team, we certainly would take a look at them.”

Alba said the Broncos’ performance on the field and the fan support they received in 2007 would help Boise State in its quest for another BCS appearance.

“That put them on the map as a major player,” Alba said. “The support that they had was tremendous. … They have a proven track record.”

Fiesta Bowl reps have attended at least two Boise State games this year and could come to next week’s showdown with Nevada.

• If Texas were to lose one of its remaining regular-season games and then win the Big 12 championship game, I could see the Fiesta Bowl pitting TCU against the Longhorns, who the game would be obligated to take.

If Texas were to lose in the Big 12 title game then the Fiesta Bowl would be obligated to take the title game champion, likely Nebraska. In that case, I could also see the Fiesta Bowl grabbing TCU.

EDIT: TCU could very well be playing for the national championship in these cases.

Root for Colorado

Oklahoma State plays Colorado on Thursday night before ending its season with Oklahoma. A loss in either game would spell the end of the Cowboys’ BCS hopes.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy expects starting quarterback Zac Robinson to play Thursday night.

If Robinson can’t go, look for junior Alex Cate to get the nod.

Former Boise State coach Dan Hawkins’ job is in jeopardy, but athletic director Mike Bohn said he has yet to discuss the situation with Hawkins.

Hawkins said he is not concerned about his job security.

There have been reports that Bohn is already discussing the Colorado job with other candidates, while some have reported that the school lacks the money to buy out Hawkins’ contract.

What a mess.

LeBron the Brown?

Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini said he would give LeBron James a shot, if the basketball star wanted to try pro football.

UPDATE: 2:06 p.m. — From the WAC:

DENVER — Western Athletic Conference Commissioner Karl Benson today handed down a half-game suspension to Louisiana Tech football player Chad Boyd as a result of a flagrant foul he committed against an LSU receiver in last Saturday’s game played in Baton Rouge, La. that went undetected by the game officials.

“A flagrant personal foul should have been called by the game officials, and Boyd should have been ejected from the game at that time," said Benson.

The play occurred at the 13-minute mark of the third quarter.

Further Benson said, “By NCAA rules, I am required to review these types of situations and it was determined that the player clearly committed a flagrant foul, and thus will be suspended. Protecting a defenseless player from a hit to the head has been a point of emphasis for two years and cannot be tolerated even if it goes undetected by the game officials.”

Boyd will be suspended for the first half of Louisiana Tech's game at Fresno State this Saturday, Nov. 21.

We can root for Colorado all

We can root for Colorado all we want but they're not going to beat Oklahoma State, though Oklahoma may well do...

Another reason to root for Colorado.......

So they don't fire Hawkins.........and come after Coach Pete. The school may not have the money to buy out Hawkins, but a network of very wealthy alumni do. People are going to come after Coach Pete, count on it.

Why Pete?

Why would they come after Pete? According to all the college football experts who troll these pages BSU is a weak team in a weak conference and shouldn’t be ranked! Making Pete a weak coach?

I’m just going by all the loud mouths who feel BSU shouldn’t be considered a BCS contender, therefore Coach Pete won’t be considered for other jobs.

Unless those loud mouth idiots are just wrong? Oh wait they are!

No... they're not wrong.

No... they're not wrong.

Don't take away.....

Don't take away their fun, they need something negative to say. Their jealous of Boise State's success, and need to flap their gums to make themselves feel better about their crappy team (insert vandals here). These bozos know that the Broncos are not weak, and there isn't anything they can do about that part of their schedule (WAC). Outside of the WAC, people have to be willing to play them. All this yappin about Boise States out of conference schedule is bulls**t, if NONE OF THE BIG BOYS WILL PLAY YOU. It's high time you back bitting snivlers find something else to do, other than come on the boards and act like overgrown boobs !

Again...

where is the proof? There is a lot of talk about teams not wanting to play BSU, but I don't recall seeing any proof or even names of the teams that have turned down BSU. Only that they are "top" teams. What does that mean? Top teams in their conference. Top class teams that have great gentlemen? Top academic teams?

BorderPatrol? You okay?

Why would Bohn come after coach Pete? Didn't Hawkins have a steller record at BSU? Do you really think the power brokers at Colorado would think that Petersen would be any better? Koetter won barely 50% of his games at ASU after posting huge percentages at Boise State. Hawkins? Well, he's barely over 30% winning percentage at CU. Those two don't help a coach Pete. In other words, the more 'elite' programs are keen on the fact that with BSU's schedule those high wins vs. low number of loses doesn't tell the entire story. CU will be looking elsewhere or Bohn will be out the door too!

Are you really that stupid?

What do Hawkins' and Koetter's records at other schools have to do with Pete's coaching ability? Try nothing. By your logic, no NFL team would ever draft another QB from Notre Dame or Oregon because Rick Mirer, Brady Quinn, Akili Smith and Joey Harrington didn't work out in the NFL. You bring stupidity to a new level.

By the way, your attempt to somehow besmirch Boise State because Koetter was 40-34 in his six years at ASU tends to ignore the fact that big school BCS legend Dennis Erickson is about to post his second consecutive losing season there. I guess that means that those Miami teams really weren't any good, right? Moron.

coach pete

this is silly pete would not go to asu or colorado i am pretty sure. First of all CU is not a football town. The university actually dispises athletics. they really do consider themselves intellectually above football. I have no idea how they won a national championship in the 90's because they really do think atheletics are beneath them. and they have plenty of money

BSU Chances are "up in the air" .....

Well, he said it. Boise State is going to have to do a lot of praying to get an invite to a BCS game. The only bowl that makes sense is the Fiesta. The other likely bowls don't. Here are a couple of major problems that don't seem to be discussed much. 1) BSU 'traveled' well to Phoenix (number of tickets sold) greatly because Arizona is not that far away. New Orleans (Sugar) is a long haul and an expensive airfare and frankly BSU would not sell all that many tickets. Florida is off the charts in terms of expense and BSU would sell even less for a game there. 2) Eyeballs. Boise is not the king of television markets. Ratings are a HUGE deal to the BCS bowls (and other bowls too). The east coast viewers have hardly heard of Boise State (other than they know they play on the 'damned blue field'). Oklahoma State brings the eyeballs of the entire BIG 12 and the east coast viewers would watch an Oklahoma State before they would BSU. Sorry, just the truth.

Sooooo, you better hope Hawk can pull off an upset. There are a couple of other teams that could pop up in the face of BSU for the Fiesta invite but Oklahoma State presents the greatest challenge. At least this week. Go Buffs!

You're points are mostly valid.

More so than most I've seen. The only thing you didn't really mention is what we all love about college football. The almost total unpredictability of what could possibly happen.

As for BSU not really being in the limelight of the east coast, to a point maybe. I travel a lot and wear a BSU hat constantly. The one comment I do hear is "blue turf...right?". Even heard it again in the elevator going to the room tonight in southern Florida. Yesterday in a meeting a guy looked at me before I took my hat off and said "Boise huh...you guys are on a roll". We're known and respected by the normal populace...but by the BCS? I don't think so.

I'm pulling for Hawkins, but

I don't think he's winning anything as long as his kid is playing QB.

new flash

hansen is the starting qb for colorado and has been for sometime now.

Don't gamble with no buffalo chips, you hear?

You're supposed to throw them at stuff or use them for targets.
