New Boise venture capital firm focuses on renewable energy
The Obama Administration’s stimulus package has pumped millions of dollars into Idaho’s struggling economy and energy development is one of the areas that has benefited.
Micron Technology got $5 million to help jump start its efforts to move into light emitting diode manufacturing, which may get it in on the ground floor of a huge new energy efficient lighting technology. Amalgamated Sugar and Simplot got feasibility studies dollars to look into co-generation and energy efficiency programs that will improve their bottom lines.
Idaho Power's smart grid initiative gets a $47 million boost from stimulus dollars and the state is directing millions of dollars to efforts to make homes businesses, schools and government building more energy efficient.
Inovus Solar gets a piece of the action with efforts to convert Boise city lights to LED lighting. And several companies will benefit from the biomass projects that will turn Idaho trees into biofuels.
But experts agree if Boise is to become a center of the new alternative energy and energy efficiency industry it will need strong ties with universities and venture capital. Boise State University President Bob Kustra’s proposal to build a research park on campus moves one of the critical pieces forward.
Now the opening of a new venture capital firm in Boise dedicated to early stage renewable energy technology adds another. August Ventures is a new firm that plans to invest in promising energy companies developing renewable energy, energy storage, energy efficiency and intelligence, and advanced materials.
Engineer and August Ventures Founder Eric Hansen told Highway 12 Venture’s Glenn Michael
in an interview he started the venture capital fund now because in a downturn talented people from larger corporations are looking to create their own opportunities.
He’s looking all over the West not just in Idaho but August Ventures location in Boise adds to the mix of creative entrepreneurs, investors and visionaries who will become the foundation of the new energy industry here.

State records say Peterson founded the company in Dec 2008.
Barker says Hansen founded the company.
The article posted on Hwy12 says Hansen "manages" the company.
???
Any bets that Barker screwed up the wording and writes Hansen "founded" the company when he actually is the current manager????
And let's ignore the fact that half the post is about stimulus money instead of the "new firm" in the headline.
Unfortunately the August Ventures website suks and doesn't offer any information. Kinda crazy for a hi-tech firm to have a krappy website... oh well, Good luck with dat!
