The unfortunate (Larry Craig) headline of the week

Share

A leftover from last week:

Former Sen. Larry Craig joined a diverse, bipartisan group of co-signers on a petition calling for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison — and for the prosecution of terrorism suspects in federal courts.

The petition caught the notice of Wall Street Journal blogger Jess Bravin. "Hours after the petition’s release, the Senate rejected an amendment that would have barred prosecuting Guantanamo inmates in federal court," Bravin wrote.

The other thing that caught my eye was the headline: "Larry Craig Takes a Stance Against Gitmo."

Unfortunately coincidental word choice? Or a coy reference to Craig's infamous "wide stance" defense? I sent the Journal's Washington Wire repeated e-mails seeking a clarification, but got no response.

Some word choices, it appears, never die.

Are you going to even care that he had an opinion?

Are you irony deficient? Take a bittersweet pill, I guess.

No need to stoop to his level

The petition (and who all is supporting it) is more interesting than another cheap shot at Craig. The WSJ's record of opinion is pretty tawdry, so I guess Jess Bravin's contribution fits right in there.

You, however, could have done better.

I appreciate the (indirect) link to the work that Human Rights First is doing. Lawrence Wilkerson and John Dean are just two of the signers who caught my eye in scanning the petition: Beyond Guantanamo: A Bipartisan Declaration; "Declaration Supporting Federal Court Prosecution of Terrorism Suspects and Opposing Indefinite Detention Without Charge."

Fun

It's fun watching Republicans morph back into humans when they are out of power. Reminds me of Lee Atwater's confessions near the end. Next thing you know, Craig will be for gay marriage and want to get rid of DADT. Welcome back Larry Craig.

Larry's Book

Hey where is Larry's book? He is very bookable on Leno, Letterman, Daily Show, etc on promotion tour since he remains a national punch line for hypocrisy and pathetic excuses.

Some word choices don't deserve to be terminated.

Not when at least 5 people will tend to comment no matter what.
