Who is the best player in the WAC?
UPDATE: 12:40 p.m. — Meant to mention this earlier, but ESPN Radio host Colin Cowherd called for Boise State coach Chris Petersen to be a serious candidate for the presumed soon-to-be-vacant Notre Dame job at the end of the year.
Cowherd said the Irish should offer the job to Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald first and then come after Petersen if they decided to part ways with Charlie Weis.
Cowherd said Petersen had done all he could do at Boise State, where the Broncos would never have a chance to play for the national title and where going undefeated didn't even guarantee a spot in the BCS.
It's November, which means it's time for the annual Petersen to (fill in the blank) university talk to begin.
Who is the best player in the WAC?
The competition for WAC Offensive Player of the Year honors will be intense, as three superb candidates have emerged — Fresno State RB Ryan Mathews, Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick and Boise State QB Kellen Moore.
But after reading colleague Nick Jezierny’s story — and listening to Boise State players and coaches talk about Idaho guard Mike Iupati — I wonder if the best player in the league isn’t an offensive lineman.
It is like the Heisman Trophy race. Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain might be the two best players in the country. But the Heisman is going to go to an offensive player such as Florida QB Tim Tebow, Texas QB Colt McCoy, Alabama RB Mark Ingram or Houston QB Case Keenum.
Iupati and the Idaho offensive line against the Boise State defensive line is one of the more intriguing position battles in Saturday’s rivalry game at Bronco Stadium.
“He’s a real physical guy, one of the most physical guards I’ve seen this year. He’s going to give us a run for our money. He’s a really good guard,” Boise State defensive tackle Billy Winn said of Iupati, who is projected as high as a second-round NFL Draft pick. “He’s strong off the ball. His pass sets are really good. He’s going to give us a little bit of trouble.”
WAC Offensive Player of the Year battle
• The Fresno Bee tackled the battle between Mathews, Moore and Kaepernick for WAC Offensive Player of the Year honors in this story.
The case for each:
Ryan Mathews
– Leads the nation in rushing at 162.1 yards per game. He is more than 25 yards ahead of the No. 2 rusher.
– Is tied for the WAC lead (with Idaho’s DeMaundry Woolridge) in rushing touchdowns with 14.
– Has rushed for at least 100 yards in every game this season
Colin Kaepernick
– Has accounted for 26 touchdowns (12 rushing, 14 passing)
– Nevada is the No. 1 rushing offense in the country and the No. 2 total offense in the nation
– Is averaging 102.2 yards per game and 8.3 yards per carry on the ground
– Nevada has scored more than 60 points in three of its last six games
Kellen Moore
- Is No. 1 in the country in pass efficiency
- Has thrown 27 touchdowns and just three interceptions
- Is second in the nation in touchdown passes, one behind Keenum
- Boise State is 9-0 and ranked No. 6 in the country
WAC Defensive Player of the Year battle
It doesn't get as much attention, but there is an interesting competition for the league's top defender.
Boise State has several candidates, including CB Kyle Wilson, DE Ryan Winterswyk, S Jeron Johnson and Winn.
Nevada defensive ends Kevin Basped (six sacks, 9.0 tackles for loss) and Dontay Moch (18.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks) will also get some votes.
Fresno State DE Chris Carter (10.5 tackles for loss, four sacks) and maybe Idaho safety Shiloh Keo (WAC-high 95 tackles, several big plays) will get attention, too.
Do the Boise State players split the vote and allow one of the Nevada guys to win the award? It's possible.

I would give it to Mathews
I would give it to Mathews for sure. That guy is awesome, and he has been critical in Fresno's winning streak. He could probably leave early and get a fairly high draft ranking.
I might say Iupati too.....
but it's always the glam positions that get this kind of award. I would give it to Mathews.....exceptional athlete. Same goes for Kaepernick. Moore has a whole lot of field smarts going for him and is a great QB...but for this year I go with Mathews.
Kellen Moore..
The #1 rated QB in pass efficiency in the country while leading the #6 rated team and one of the few remaining undefeated teams in the nation. Accomplishing this with little to no running game. Enough said...
When will...
WINS count for anything. Moore not only has the offenssive stats to rival wither of these guys, he also WINS!
Kap
He's a senior, give it to him. Take that back, the guys a jr. so is Mathews, give it to the stud Moore.
wins should count....
MOST of the time. But in this case, a guy can be the second coming and be on a miserable team. He should still be considered. Maybe Shilo Keo should be considered? And I'm not a Vandal fan, but he's having a great year and is a big reason they won a couple of their games. Wilson doesn't have the stats, but like wins, if they don't throw your way there's nothing you can do about it.
Probably Mathews
Wins do count but sometimes it is more impressive to dominate on a not so dominate team. More is very accurate but my guess is that any of BSU's QB's would be having at least a decent year this year. In any other conference Mathews would be a leading Heisman candidate. Kap is a little to one dimensional, and their offense is tough but kind of gimmicky.
Enderle
Isn't Enderle leading the league in yards? Why is he not even in the discussion (cough, bsu bullsh**, cough, cough)?
Maybe because
he stunk it up against a 1-7 San Jose State team, was benched and watched his backup lead the winning drive? Maybe because everyone but the Vandulls realize he is, at best, the fourth-best starting QB in the conference, and maybe the second-best QB on his own team.
Kellen Moore
Kellen Moore is the STUD... He is the all around best quarterback in the WAC. And just wait till next year.
enderle
probably because of moore & kaepernick. i don't think too many people would put him ahead of either of them.
as for petersen to notre dame, i certainly hope not. i think he believes, and we believe also, that given a few more years the bcs will be a reasonable opportunity for us every year.
player of the year, i say mathews.
Heisman
Kellen will win the Heisman so let someone else have the WAC OPOY
This isn't optimist football
This isn't optimist football where every kid needs to be made to feel needed and good about themselves. These are college age kids. Young men. These honors should be given to the player(s) who most deserve it, not evenly distributed just to make sure no one feels left out.
AHHHHHH
hugh...hugh...OK.
No disrespect to...
Moore and Matthews, but this is not a contest. Kaepernick is the single most devastating player in the league. He has a jaw dropping play almost every single game. Moore and Matthews have been consistently good this year and they rarely make mistakes but Kapernick is electric. He completely changes games with his arm and legs. Matthews and Moore are more one dimensional. Matthews will be drafted and Moore will eventually win this award anyways Bronco Nation...so don't worry.
Cowherd is right
At least as long as BSU is in the WAC. The Broncos will play ONE BCS opponent per year as long as they are in the WAC which means that they will be eliminated from BCS title hopes on the opening day of each football season. Second problem is that the Broncos are forced to blow out every opponent and win every single game they play in order to play in a BCS game. Can you imagine how much pressure that puts on Petersen and the team? At best, the Broncos will maintain a top 15 ranking every year and play in some decent bowls, but Bronco nation had better get used to the Broncs being left out of National Title picture. It will NEVER happen as long as they are in the WAC. The only other possibility would be if a playoff system was put in place. Petersen is committed to Boise for sure, but for how long when his hard work and perfect seasons result in San Diego Bowl Games against a non-BCS opponent? I would love it if the above wasnt true, but it is. The Broncos are doing the best they can but it simply isnt enough.
Kaepernick gets my vote.
I am big BSU fan and supporter - that being said Kellen has done a great job in the program... if he weren't here someone else would step up - he has a great supporting staff too. Colin doesnt have the quality players around him - he has carried the team in my opinion. If Colin was out this year the only fight in Reno would be against San Jose for last place in the WAC.
Coach Petersen to Notre Dame??
Petersen to Notre Dame? I don't think so. Has anyone checked the records of the head coaches that left Boise State for the 'elite' programs? Koetter was barely a 50% winner at ASU before getting fired, Hawkins is far below 50% at Colorado. I think these bits of research enter into the picture now. Besides, Chris Petersen is doing okay at BSU. A million plus per year, he owns the city and the future is bright. One can live pretty well in Boise on over a million a year and he can't beat the job security! When you look at the other top coaches of the non elite programs only Brian Kelly at Cincinnati (he's the next Notre Dame coach) at 1.2 million in salary and Gary Patterson at TCU (1.3 million) make more. Petersen's salary is 200k more than Whittingham at Utah and 250k more than Mendenhall at BYU! Petersen can become a true coaching legend at BSU by staying and his worries should be about losing Justin Wilcox and some of the other coaches on his staff. This city is made for Chris Petersen and his family. Why on earth would he want to move on to the likes of Notre Dame? National title? Perhaps, but based on the records of the previous two head coaches at BSU that just might be a lot more difficult than someday getting the shot while at BSU. Next year the Broncos return all but 5 on thier roster and play a schedule that just might -- just might -- get them in position for the elusive national title game. But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves here....there is still a lot of football to be played THIS YEAR before even starting to consider next year.
Kaepernick
benefits from a dominant Nevada offensive line. They are #2 in total rushing yards in the nation as a team. They also lead the league in yards per carry. Take away the beef of Nevada's O line, and there is no way Kaepernick is nearly as successful. Of the 3 players, only Mathews is going to the NFL...... JMHO
Peterson Leaving?
While I would hate it, I would not be surprised if Coach Pete left nor could I blame him. But to Notre Dame? I think not.
That school does not fill anyone's growing pains. They are a years away from being a real threat. Then again they have a much better SOS than BSU. BSU is stuck in the WAC- Worthless Athletic Community. If Peterson left I see him in the Pac-10, SEC or Big East. Notre Dame is a lateral move and he would lose most of his coaches. As far as player of the year, Kap is the man. Nevada has caught fire at the right time and on the rise and might even catch BSU coaches shopping for a BSC coaching job.
Moore
Total yards, Total TD's. On the Heisman list. Only a Sophmore. The best Vandal player might want to get a job licking the dogshi# from his boothills. I think Sat. I will see Vandals bleeding Blue. It's coming......close your eyes, it might hurt.
DEPENDS ON WHAT PETE WANTS TO BE KNOWN FOR
Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno started coaching programs that were not national powers. Every year these schools got snubbed. Who has had more undefeated seasons and finished 2nd or 3rd in the nation than Joe PA. If he wants to be Iconic then he stays and sees it through. It may take 20 to 30 years but eventually somebody is going to want him and BSU in a better conference. The facilities at these places blew before these coaches arrived and they got improved. The fact of the matter is, is does coach Pete feel like a part of the community
Does it matter when everybody says we should go elsewhere?

Best player in WAC
All (3) players are very good.
Moore is the best passer.
Kap is best dual threat.
Mathews is best rusher.
If moore gets hurt Boise still rolls.
If Kap gets hurt Nevada falls to 3rd or 4th in WAC.
Switch Moore to Nevada and Kap to Boise, nowthat would be interesting. They are both where they belong.
Boise beats Nevada 45 to 24. Nevada D not that good.
Name the score
contest will be in two weeks for that game but thanks for the insight on Nev's weak D. I know BSU D will have their hands full against Kap and his Krew. It will be a highscoring game like past years. Hope no OT to finish the PACK o nthe Blue this time.
This is not even a good debate.
The best player, plays on the WAC'S best team- Kellen Moore. Bend it, twist it, any way you like, Moore is THE BEST. Vandal's have the coach most likly to make an a** out of himself, does that count ?
Yes, but who would be the best Playa in the WAC?
