Boise State football coach Chris Petersen’s salary ranks at about the midpoint of Football Bowl Subdivision coaches, according to a database compiled by USA Today.

Petersen’s base salary for 2009 (actually Feb. 1, 2009-Jan. 31, 2010) is $1,112,650. USA Today uses a slightly different number, including items such as expense accounts and outside income.

Petersen’s salary ranks 53rd on USA Today’s list. He likely would be lower but nine schools did not provide information and many, if not all, likely pay their coach more than Petersen.

The USA Today list also has Hawaii coach Greg McMackin making more than Petersen. That has changed because McMackin agreed to a pay cut last summer.

Petersen stands to make much more money over the next few weeks.

If the Broncos win 12 games, he will get a 19 percent raise for 2010 to $1,324,053. He already has earned at least a 5 percent raise for winning eight games and would get a 10 percent raise for winning 10 games.

If the Broncos are ranked in the Top 10 after the bowls, he gets a $117,720 bonus. If they’re in the Top 25, he gets $92,720.

If the Broncos go to a Bowl Championship Series game, he gets a $100,000 bonus. That bonus drops to $92,720 for a WAC title or $55,632 for a bowl berth.

Petersen also has a $20,000 bonus based on his team’s academic performance.

If he meets all possible bonuses, he’ll get $237,720 plus the 19 percent raise.

Already this year, Petersen received the first half of a deferred-compensation bonus based on longevity. He earned the $250,000 payment in August. He gets another $250,000 if he completes the five-year contract, which runs through the 2011 season.

Petersen’s buyout drops by $200,000 to $550,000 after the Broncos’ bowl game this year. The buyout expires after the 2010 bowl game, which could push Boise State to re-negotiate this offseason.

Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore remains sixth in ESPN.com’s Heisman Watch. He retained his two first-place votes from last week.

Alabama running back Mark Ingram is in first place. Houston quarterback Case Keenum is second.

Moore slipped into a tie for eighth in the HeismanPundit.com poll.

He’s tied for sixth in the ESPN.com Heisman Predictor standings.

Moore still leads the nation in pass efficiency, although BYU quarterback Max Hall has cut Moore’s lead to less than two points. Keenum leads Moore in the touchdown race 28-27. Moore leads in touchdown-to-interception ratio (27 TDs, three interceptions).

ESPN.com’s Pat Forde makes the case for two non-BCS teams in the Bowl Championship Series — an idea that has been gaining momentum in recent weeks.

Way too funny

Any football fan can’t help but like this?

That was pretty funny

I'll bet it was pretty accurate, too.

whatever we are paying coach petersen

it is not enough. i would gladly send $100 annually to keep him around. i believe he is on record as stating his pay is fine, his concern is for his assistant coaches. i would like to see a larger incentive for academics for our athletes. saw an article today forecasting us in the fiesta bowl against usc. that would be a nice match. first things first however, let's pummel the trolls this weekend.

patmac nice

hook up. poor ned. could ned be cotvandal?

Where Is Jerry Maguire When You Don't Need Him ?

Using the USA Today Football Bowl Subdivision coaches pay chart (referenced in the above main article), I have performed some basic analysis.

Coach Akey, Idaho head coach, plays 12 games during the 2009 regular season and makes $258,187 a year for that season. This equals $21,515.58 per game.

Coach Peterson, BSU head coach, plays 13 games during the 2009 regular season and makes $1,123,150 for that season. This equals $86,396.15 per game.

Coach Akey is almost the lowest paid coach in the FBS (only 2-3 are lower than him). He is also, becoming a nationally known commodity with a track record of turning around a weak fotball program and making it competetive (yes, albeit a mid-major one) and successful after only a 3 year stint. He is basically 'highly desirable' and marketable at this point in time. To capitalize on his new found status he can't stay too long in Moscow - his success might be fleeting and possibly not be matched again. Basically, it might be time for him to 'take the cookies and run' to a higher paying head coaching opportunity.

It readily appears to me that the Idaho athletic administrator(s) are going to have to 'pony up some more bucks' after this season, to keep Akey around (ammendments to his contract and such additional assorted 'perks'). I don't really know where these 'bucks' will readily come from, as Idaho does not have the 'deep pockets' that the large BSU fan/advertising base provides.

I know, I know, contracts are supposedly in place and all that stuff. But - there are always provisions for 'buy outs' and 'early exit' from contractual clauses (a Business 301 thingy), especially for a high turnover prone profession such as football coaching.

What does this all mean? Basically, the sh#^ is going to hit the fan in Moscow after all the commotion of Coach Akey and the Vandals having such a great season subsides and dies down after our upcoming Humanitarian Bowl appearance (which will only add to the 'desirability' factor).

During Jan-Feb 2010 time frame, Akey, is going to want more bucks to stay in Moscow. Any rational thinking businessman would, too. I can't blame him for that. Or some other FBS school is going to want to buy out Akey's contract and move him there (maybe even possibly Colorado for one) at a greatly increased salary.

The Idaho Regents, athletic administrator(s), and the entire Vandal Nation are going to crap our pants/panties, because of the new found success of our beloved and cherished Vandal football program.

I can see it coming. We will be victims of our own success. The price of progress, I guess.

Can you say "Goodbye Coach Akey?"

Akey will be coaching somewhere else next year. Idaho would have to match what will be a very attractive offer to Akey and that's just not going to happen. I have a great deal of respect for what Coach Akey has done through his years at WSU and now at Idaho but let's face the truth here and state that coaching at Idaho is not one of the crown jewels in the college coaching profession. Where would he go? Well, I can't say but I do know that there is a university about 7-8 miles away that's not real happy with the results of their last coaching choice and Akey just happens to be very familiar with that school.

vndl, probably correct

but if you get your tail handed to you in your remaining games and in the human bowl, there may not be any interest. i fear you may be putting the horse before the cart. i seem to recall that your ad specifically structured the contract to hedge against all this and of course all that can be circumvented by the deep pockets of another school. also akey claims to love the home town feel of the moscow pullman area for his family and of course that could all go by the wayside for warmer climes of san jose & el paso, or the charm of lincoln neb & iowa city etc. hopefully your off or def coordinator could step in. that is how we got petersen. everybody thought hawkins was the man and he was but nobody would take him back now.

The Succsess Of A Winning Program - A Real Money Pit

broncos81: You said - ". . . also akey claims to love the home town feel of the moscow pullman area for his family . . . "

Yeah, I heard these famous words before - personally - from Dennis Erickson before the Spring '06 Silver/Gold game at a no-host fundraiser (even had to pay for my own manly Vandal beer as I was getting shook down - but didn't have to use a Butt Tube to drink it like you guys do).

Well, I guess I and a bunch of other long time Vandies can expect to get a phone call early next spring asking for 'contributions' for the cause.

You guys went thru it, due to your 'success' and 'progress' - guess its our turn now.

We have had our share of turnover and lack of team/head coach stability and cohesion this decade. But, not due to our 'success'. This crap is all new. Uncharted territory.

Gotta love it, I guess.

Guess I'll be one of those $100.00 per month dudes, like you, too - before long.

btw vndl

do you suppose petersen would let me take over for one of the automatic wins (like this weekend) and i could get the $86K?

Big Pay For Big Performance

and that is why Rob Akey will find a new home next year. My guess is it will be at Washington State. Where ever it is, he will be paid about five times the $155K plus incentives Idaho pays him. This has just GOT to irritate the heck out of the perennially loosing Vandals. For those who think the $750K buy is a hindrance, may I remind them that $750K is pocket change for most programs if their supporters really want a coach. And this will definitely stop some of Akey's new recruits from going to Moscow.

NOTE TO IDAHO: You really ought to consider going back to 1AA where you won't have these problems.

good point on the wsu job

particularly since that is where he came from. Paul Wulff certainly has not performed. sort of hate to see it but you can't blame a guy for wanting to move onward & upward.

and i said i would contribute $100

annually not monthly. always twisting the words vndl. too much manly beer i presume?

Big Time Donko Supporter - I Mean Diamond Level - That Big !

Oh, just trying to 'shame' you into being a good supporter of your team.

You probably spend $100.00 bucks a month on porn, video games, bowling, parking fines, and court costs anyways.

You wouldn't miss it.

The Internet IS for Porn so why include it in costs???

vndl is funny

i did go bowling two weeks ago & got a 154 & 151. looks as though the trolls will need every dime you can spare. i can assist you with setting up a direct contribution to the vsf every month for $150.

Is A Turkey A Bowling Term Or A Partner Needed For "Bronco Love"

Sounds good. Send me the direct contribution form and one of your blank checks. I'll fill the form out and mail it right in.

Wowow - a 154 series. That's pretty good. An average of 51.33333 per game. Not bad.

Did you put the bumpers down first?

VNDUL

You trash man. You know the spanking that is comming. You would prefer to take it on your knees or elbows and knees? I don't know the Vandal's preference. Either way, here it comes. Babe.

VNDUL

Your'e probably from Garden City. Not that it is a bad thing. I just get that feeling.
I think this one time? We went to U of I and after a period of profound boredom, we went to WAZU.

So did the topic.

Idaho's coach and him moving on

Don't think he'll be going anywhere.
One year with a winning record doesn't spell a big pay off
I want him to stay because the stronger the WAC the better we look when we kick everyones behinds. I had some Manly Vandal brew last night. Keystone light I think it called. Or was that MGD? I blacked out and woke up this morning with a troll doll in both hands and my mouth tasted like bbq sause and noodles. Very odd. Don't despair UofI, you one winning season coach is safe.

Whatever BSU, fans and the administration need to do

To keep Chris Peterson, lets do it. When I look at all the "Mickey Mouse nonsense" that we could have, I am more and more thankful for the thoughtful, calculated and savvy approach of our coach. I would put this guy up against anyone in the country. He is two or three steps ahead of the game. Hawkins was just lucky to have him and he knows that.

My op

UI Akey going nowhere-hasn't proved anything cept he can win against easy competition. He would do no better at WAZU or Colorado then the guys presently there. Have an undefeated regular season then I would saw be scared of bigger schools stealing your coach. That will never happen until BSU moves on though so no worries there.
