Glowing gardens, turkeys and Eagle Scouts

What's up at Idaho Botanical Garden?

A few news bits from IBG — first from the annual Scarecrow Stroll event. Local businesses and families designed scarecrows, which were placed around the garden during the month of October. Visitors voted, and picked the best:

1st Place: "Nyla the Nature Nymph" by the Brandsma Family
2nd Place: "Shine on Harvest Moon" by Hibbs' Kids
3rd Place: "Boise Foothill Dog Walker" by Lois and Sonya Lenzi
Honorable Mention: "Miss Piggy" by the Community Work Center

Also note, the garden’s "Boys in the Swing" statue has been restored and will be put in place, lit with lights, and displayed during this year’s Winter Garden aGlow (opening Thanksgiving Day).

The public is invited to a short ceremony at the garden, 2 p.m., Nov. 17 in the Children’s Garden. If it’s not too chilly, garden staffers will even turn on the fountain...

Doing autumn cleaning? Here’s the IBG’s newest wish list:

-holiday lights
-seasoned fire-wood for burn barrels
-floor vacuum or sweeper in good condition
-paper shredder in good condition

Call the Garden at 343-8649 to donate, 2355 Old Penitentiary Rd. Boise.

Donate a turkey for an Eagle Scout?

Trent Johnson of Scout Troop 318, is collecting turkeys — and dollars — for the Idaho Food Bank to earn his Eagle badge in the process. His goal is 100 turkeys...but I'm thinking no one would mind if he donated a couple hundred?

If you’re out and about Saturday, you can drop a turkey off between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Centennial High School, 12400 W. McMillan Rd., Meridian, and next Saturday, Nov. 14 at Lowell Scott Middle School, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., 13600 W. McMillan Rd.

Good luck, Trent.

I was worried for a second about glowing turkeys and Boy Scouts.
