Catching up with past Treasure Valley prep standouts
Here are a handful of athletes from the Treasure Valley who are finding success in the college ranks. Please e-mail me at jzentz@idahostatesman.com if you know of other athletes who have made an impact at the college level. I know there are many more out there, but it's difficult to track them all down this time of year with so much going on locally. Your help is needed.
Halley Kreminski, Portland women's soccer, Eagle: The sophomore recently scored a second-half hat trick for the No. 2-ranked Pilots (16-1-0) in an 8-0 victory against the San Francisco Dons to bring her season totals to eight goals and two assists. Despite starting just once this season, Kreminski ranks fourth on the team with 18 points. She finished her freshman season last fall with four goals. Portland visits Santa Clara on Sunday and hosts San Diego on Nov. 6 before taking part in the NCAA tournament, which begins Nov. 13. The Pilots lost to Stanford in last year's national semifinals.
Katie Skinner, Georgetown women's golf, Bishop Kelly: The freshman recently finished a two-day tournament in North Carolina where she shot 76-80-73 to lead the team and finish eighth overall. She had a hole-in-one during her first round. Here's a link to a story about Skinner and the Hoyas.
Abbie Curran, Ole Miss women's soccer, Eagle: The sophomore has a goal and an assist for the Rebels (11-4-2) this season, starting twice and playing in 17 games. No. 17 Ole Miss had a six-game unbeaten streak snapped in a 1-0 loss against Vanderbilt on Sunday. The Rebels host Mississippi State on Friday and Alabama on Tuesday before heading to the SEC tournament, which begins Nov. 4.
Logan Emory, Portland men's soccer, Centennial: The senior has started all 14 games for Portland (8-3-3), where he plays defender. He was one of four players on the 2008 team that started all 20 games.
Hugh Thornton, Illinois football, Boise/Mountain View: The freshman is a starting right tackle, who competed in football, wrestling and track for Boise as a sophomore and with Mountain View as a junior before moving to Ohio. Here's a recent story about Thornton in the Chicago Tribune.
