Moore climbs to fifth in ESPN.com's Heisman Watch

Boise State sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore's Heisman Trophy campaign is gaining steam.

Moore moved up to fifth on ESPN.com's Heisman Watch on Tuesday. He was sixth last week.

Moore got a first-place vote this week and was listed on six of the 15 ballots.

He leads the nation in pass efficiency and touchdown passes. He has thrown 21 touchdown passes and just two interceptions, the second-best touchdown-to-interception ratio in the nation.

Moore also is 19-1 at Boise State.

Moore gave a typically aw-shucks response when asked about the hype Tuesday.

"It's exciting," he said. "It's pretty neat."

Gratz

I hope he continues to improve.

No offense to Moore

But shouldn't the Heisman trophy be reserved for senior quarterbacks with a long and consistent record of accomplishments instead of a sophomore with highly impressive potential? This sounds too much like a certain Nobel Peace prize to me.

You mean like...

Giving the trophy to a QB for what he has done over 4 years instead of what he has done this year? Th Trophy is for the best CFB player this year...Moore certainly cannot be excluded from the list of best PLayers/QB's this year because he is a sophomore.

A guy named TIm Tebow won it when he was a soph...maybe SEC players should be exceptions?

Merit + what else?

Probably the only justification for giving the Heisman to "the" outstanding player regardless of class ranking is the team factor which has a lot of volatility built into it. No QB has ever won a Heisman with incompetent receivers. It is very much a team/school award. The best player in the nation might never be honored if all the stars had to be perfectly aligned for 3-4 consecutive years, so my comment was one of those knee-jerk reactions to other aspects of the Heisman award that appear to be more subjective.

OTOH, the award has mostly gone to seniors, some juniors, and one sophomore.

I've been a Buckeye fan (native state) longer than I've been a Bronco fan (home state). I would love to see Moore win the Heisman this year (assuming he has earned it), but I would hate to see him win it based 75% on talent and 25% on some feel good, spread the wealth criteria. My confidence in the Heisman award being based solely on merit would be restored if Moore were able to match or surpass Archie Griffin's record by winning the Heisman 2-3 years in a row. We know they wouldn't give a BSU player the honor twice unless his record was beyond nitpicking. Tebow has a better chance of becoming only the 2nd player in Heisman history to win the trophy twice, especially if Florida remains #1. Is that a reason for taking a closer look at sophomores in recent years? Have the headlines already been written for the lucky player whose team can hold it together for 2-3 years?

Go Broncos!

Seniors Only?

You would think it should go to a time tested and proven player but it isn't that way. Tim Tebow got it in 2007 and he was just a sophomore.

A certain FOX SPORTS guy should be eligible now...

why not?

Why shouldn't Moore be considered for the Heisman when he is one of top rated quarterbacks in the nation? I think the Heisman winner should appear in the Rose bowl. I want to see BSU v. Oregon in Pasadena. For that, I would have to put some mileage on the Mastercard.

Moore for Heisman

I like it. It would be so cool/funny if he won. Think of all the bashing. If he wins it in any of his years at BSU, that would be awesome.

Well......

If only he could run. Just a little.

If he is gonna try for the Heisman....

I suggest he start putting up insane numbers. Honestly, he isnt throwing enough!

Ya, he has outstanding TD/INT ratio, and has one of the highest QB ratings in the nation. However, he has only 1600 passing yards total, and 232 passing yds per game. The leaders have thrown almost TWICE as many times as he has. He needs to thrown AT LEAST 30 times EVERY game.

Let's face it. He is VERY effective, but far from the best QB (much less the best player). The only way to compare is for him to throw as much as they do. I'd like to see Boise State decrease the running game, and let Mr Moore light up the defenses!

facts

the leaders have thrown twice as many times? I just looked at the leaders numbers on espn, if they have thrown twice as many times then they are very bad qb because he has more yards then tebow, and the other two at most have 400 more total yards, but you say they have thrown twice as many times, that would make him the number one choice easy if it only takes half the throws.

Try to follow along before you embarass yourself again.

I never said I was comparing him to the other Heisman candidates. I was comparing him to the STAT LEADERS. You want the FACTS, here goes:

Most Attempts 390 (Sheehan - Bowling Green); Moore has 194
Most Comp 255 (Sheehan - Bowling Green); Moore has 132
Most Pass Yds 2734 (Keenum - Houston); Moore has 1627
Yds/Game 390.6 (Keenum - Houston); Moore has 232.4
Most Pass TDs 21 (Moore - Boise State); Keenum has 20

Notice Moore has LESS THAN HALF the pass attempts that Sheehan does. He also has 1100 yards less than Keenum. Statistically, Moore doesn't have the stats to win this award. That doesn't even include the fact the guy runs the 40 in just under a day. The only way he wins the Heisman is if he is in the top 3 in passing yards and touchdowns, with a low INT number. As long as his attempts are low, he win NOT ever reach those numbers.

Weeeeell

It’s collective stats that are looked at. Sure some player may have thrown a thousand yards more to date, but how many INT's or attempts and completions do they have? Notice Sheehan isn't in the Heisman race because he probably stinks in a couple other categories, so you can't compare individual categories. Moore is a really good QB and I hope he continues to have succes in college and possibly beyond.

I agree, but

I'm just saying he can make his case stronger by throwing a LOT more.

Id rather WIN

I think Kellen isnt trying for the Heisman.

Nope

I think he's trying to graduate on time.

But first...

I think he needs to figure out how to work with his Center and get that ball snap issue fixed. This is a basic skill and he better get it down before any important games.

Agreed

As long as the snaps continue to be a problem, his stats will suffer. I heard on the radio (like a post-game show or something) that most of our muffed snaps come on 3rd down. If we didn't have this snapping problem, our 3rd down conversion percentage would probably be a LOT higher, too. Of course, so would our point totals.

Oh, snaps...

are kinda a problem for two. Ask the center.

Win

I agree, there is all kinds of talk about all kinds of things, but what the bsu team does very well is win games, and that is the bottom line, and makes it fun.

He should be considered

He should be in the conversation, probably won't win. The same goes for the bronco's. Until we get out of the WAC, we are always going to be a conversation piece. That Vandals, SJSU, Utah States, and New Mexico States of this conference are bringing us down. Sorry Idaho, even Temple has a winning record this year...so you're fluke doesn't mean anything yet.

Go Utah!!!!

Conversation piece

The truth is, all but one of those being discussed for the Heisman will be nothing but a conversation piece.
Just curious...are you a Ute or a Bronco? Or are you just hoping the Utes will bring down TCU?

Petersen isn't going to have Kellen throw Moore

The Coach is trying to force the running game to be better so next year and the year after become a much more rounded team. This is just a training year folks. Petersen really could care less if Kellen Moore has a shot at the Heisman this year or if BSU for that matter gets to a BCS game. It is all about next year and a shot for the NC game. That's all this is. We are in for a wonderful ride for at least the next couple of years folks. Relax, let the BCS/Heisman go and lets enjoy this ride as a community that loves college football and the Boise State Broncos!

Probably won't happen.....

....but wouldn't that be surreal seeing him at the Heisman award show ?
Keep it going Kellen, you have two more years after this, and they won't be able to ignore you next year.
GO BRONCOS

I think an interesting question for Coach Pete would be........

do you make an effort to get a player Heisman consideration by running a certain offense/game plan (emphasis on touchdown passes) or do you just run a balanced offense for the purpose of putting your strengths against your next opponent's weaknesses? Is there ever a time where a given player is emphasized or should it always be team effort 1st, inividuals last. I'm sure everyone has an opinion -- it would be an interesting question for Pete.

Run forest run

Get Moore a running coach and teach the young man to run. Even if its just to take advantage of a large hole for a first down. How many times has there been an enormous, monstrous hole in front of him and he still will not go through it. The other teams know this and don't even defend the possibility.

Because he is slow

Even if a huge hole opened in front of him, his speed hampers how far he'll get. He may only get 2-3 yds, and that's only if he falls forward and stretched out the ball.

FACTOID

Boise wins in BCS Conferences

Pac 10 1 WSU
SEC 2 Kentucky Miss St
Big 10 1 Indiana
ACC 1 Duke
Big East 0
Big 12 1 K St

In every scenario Boise is a moot point and all this whining about BCS would not exist.

Rack me again, the coolness and truth of me is great!!!!!

The smell and rancor of the toxic slime you trail is great also.

Um, I'm not sure I understand what you are saying

Maybe you left some information out.

Bduck.

At least try to make some sober sense. Dont type while drinking. Even a BSU hater has to give them 2 wins in the Pac 10 WA St and O faces, heck might as well throw in a team named for a female body part too. so I count at the worst 3.

Watch ESPN the other night.

Watch ESPN the other night. They had Moore as #9 and never mentioned his name once during the show. Sorry...once again...dreaming...
