High school sports news and notes

It's been awhile since I've had a chance clean out my e-mail inbox, but here are a couple items that deserve mention about Nampa High and high school wrestling. Sorry it took so long to post these.

Nampa High

Nampa High recently announced it will be inducting seven former athletes, three coaches, one citizen and a team into the school's new Hall of Fame.

The ceremony is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, prior to the Bulldogs homecoming football game.

The coaches are J.A. Brown (football), Rollie Lane (wrestling/football) and Leon Long (football/baseball). The athletes are Hal Murray (baseball/track and field/basketball/football), Victor Barrera (cross country), Paul Hansen (soccer/basketball/baseball), Shawn Turner (football/track and field), Willie Alderson (football/basketball/track and field), Tonna Marek (basketball/golf/softball) and Alysson Kollmann (volleyball/basketball/softball). Nampa will also honor the 1978 cross country team, which finished the season unbeaten, and longtime Bulldog fan Bill Lofholm.

Wrestling

Boise State will host the Idaho Wrestling Coaches Clinic on Nov. 6-7. Featured clinicians include Bill Zadick, Wayne Branstetter and Don Owen.

Zadick is the U.S. freestyle wrestling resident coordinator, an assistant U.S. freestyle coach, a two-time freestyle national champion and an NCAA champion. Branstetter is a coach at Poway High School in San Diego, Calif., and his team is a reigning state champion with a dual record of 340-4-1 during his time in charge. Owen is a coach at University High in Spokane. He is a two-time WAC champion and is an NCAA wrestling official.

The clinic will also include a Boise State dual against the University of Great Falls (Mont.), technique sessions, classroom sessions, rules interpretation meetings and an Idaho state coaches meeting.

Cost is $50 and you can contact Columbia High coach Todd Cady at tcady@nsd131.org for more information.
