This could be a big weekend for Boise State’s quest to reach the Bowl Championship Series.

The No. 8 Broncos are the highest-rated non-BCS conference team at the moment, but several other teams could pass them eventually.

That’s why this weekend is so important.

TCU (No. 15 in AP, No. 14 in coaches’ poll) plays at Clemson. A victory could give the Horned Frogs, who handed Boise State its only loss last season, a jump in the human polls and put them right on the Broncos’ heels. The computer polls are likely to look favorably on TCU as well.

Houston (No. 17 AP, No. 23 coaches) has already defeated Oklahoma State. This week, the high-scoring Cougars get a crack at Texas Tech. The WAC is more highly regarded than Houston’s Conference USA, but victories over Oklahoma State and Texas Tech — both members of the Big 12 — would be impressive.

Colorado State (others receiving votes in both polls) isn’t getting much attention, but the Rams have beaten Colorado and Nevada. They play BYU this week and a win would catapult the Rams into the rankings and the BCS-buster discussion.

Not sure if Colorado State can pass Boise State with its non-conference schedule (Colorado, Weber State, Nevada and Idaho), but given how much attention the Mountain West Conference is getting, the Broncos probably don't want to deal with an undefeated MWC team.

Boise State fans should be rooting for all three to lose.

BYU and Utah each have one loss. It’s hard to envision either of them jumping Boise State even if they win out. Utah’s loss is to Oregon. Since Boise State beat the Ducks, it seems improbable that Utah could jump the Broncos.

BYU was throttled by Florida State at home. The 26-point loss, in my opinion, is too big to merit the Cougars jumping Boise State.

Catching up

Thought we had three interesting stories in the paper today:

• Chadd Cripe had a story about how the Mid-American Conference’s scheduling issues have helped Boise State, which visits Bowling Green this weekend.

• ESPN’s family of networks will televise six Idaho basketball games and just one Boise State game. The Bronco game? Against Idaho. Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier is not happy about the scheduled 10 p.m. tip-off time.

• Is Kristin Armstrong the greatest Idaho athlete ever? The Boise cyclist won her second world championship gold and is certainly in the discussion, Many of you, however, seem to disagree.
