FINAL: Boise State 51, Fresno State 34
Pre-game
5:55 p.m. — Fresno State and Boise State will observe a moment of silence before Friday night's game in honor of former NCAA president Myles Brand. Brand died this week after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
At halftime, the Fresno State marching band will have a tribute for former Bulldogs defensive coordinator Dan Brown. Brown died in March after a long battle with brain cancer. Brown played and coached at Boise State. The initials "D.B." are painted on the field at Bulldog Stadium near each goal line.
6:26 p.m. — It is 101 degrees at Bulldog Stadium about 30 minutes before kickoff.
6:34 p.m. — Lineup changes for Broncos and Bulldogs. Click here to see the moves along the Boise State offensive line and in the Fresno State secondary.
First quarter
13:05 — Winston Venable 30 interception return (Kyle Brotzman kick).
Key play: Facing a third-and-12 from the Fresno 23, quarterback Ryan Colburn forced a pass into coverage. Venable intercepted it and ran untouched into the end zone.
8:49 — Kyle Brotzman 32 field goal
Key play: Kellen Moore hit Titus Young for a 20-yard pass on a short screen to start the drive.
0:00 — The Broncos dominated the first quarter, holding Fresno State without a first down. But a fumbled exchange between Kellen Moore and Titus Young stalled one drive for the Bronco offense.
Second quarter
12:35 — D.J. Harper 60 run (Brotzman kick)
Key play: Harper rushed twice for 64 yards on the drive, including the touchdown run over the right side.
9:44 — Kevin Goessling 37 field goal
Key play: Robbie Rouse's 36-yard run, plus a 15-yard penalty on Shea McClellin for a horse-collar tackle, gave Fresno State its first first down.
7:49 — Titus Young 8 pass from Kellen Moore (Brotzman kick)
Key play: Young returned the kickoff 77 yards to set up a short scoring drive.
7:33 — Ryan Mathews 69 run (Goessling kick)
Key play: Mathews ran through a tackle attempt by Jeron Johnson and then outran the Broncos defense to the end zone.
4:58 — Ryan Mathews 60 run (Goessling kick).
Key play: Mathews broke another long run on that one. Jason Robinson had the best chance at him and missed.
Third quarter
12:28 — Brotzman 30 kick
Key play: Doug Martin had a 77-yard kickoff return after penalties negated Titus Young's kickoff return for a touchdown.
11:39 — Devon Wylie 21 pass from Ryan Colburn
Key play: Fresno State went deep three consecutive times against Boise State's cornerbacks. First was a pass interference on Kyle Wilson, next two were complete on Brandyn Thompson.
10:44 — Young fumble recovery in end zone (Brotzman kick)
Key play: Jeremy Avery broke a 74-yard run, but fumbled at the 1 and Young recovered before sliding out of the end zone. Wacky play.
3:17 — Goessling 27 field goal
Fourth quarter
14:14 — Austin Pettis 8 pass from Kellen Moore (Jimmy Pavel kick)
13:26 — Ryan Mathews 68 run (Goessling kick)
Key play: It was his third touchdown of 60 or more yards in the game.
13:00 — Jeremy Avery 67 pass from Kellen Moore (Pavel kick)
4:00 — Pavel 24 field goal
Post-game
Injury report: Brotzman had cramps. Boise State coach Chris Petersen said he didn't know about Harper.
Justin Wilcox: "The difference between him busting it for 60 yards in chunks is making a tackle."

Ruh Roh
FS is looking tough
Wow what a pathetic 2nd quarter.
Just wow..
It took a whole team effort to let Fresno back into the game. No offense and no run defense.
Holy Cow..
how many wild plays can one college game contain???
defense sucks tonight..
D+ at best
Good defense???
I think not.. they just haven't played a decent offense till now and are getting exposed!
Fresno is lighting them up passing and running like its playing a junior high team. ouch..
Thank god for our offense.
sure...
it's always the same with some people. BSU couldn't have just run into a team so hungry for a win against them that they just played extremely hard. It's gotta be that BSU isn't as good!
well, if the D's gonna have a bad game..
might as well get it out of the way in this one..
refs suck
calling way too much on both teams
Alright!!!
Tuff game but we won... WAY TO GO BRONCOS!!!
Awesome game
My hat off to Fresno, they played well. Mathews is a stud. I wish them the best for the rest of their games.
Murphy...What is the
Murphy...What is the prognosis on Harper? No sideline reporter and no mention elsewhere. Didn't look good.
Broncos win..!!
Just waiting for Brian Murphy to announce the final score here.. Yawwn..
Broncos win..!!
Hat's off to BSU and Fresno!
These two teams put on a wild one tonight.
There still is alot to work on, but both teams should make it into bowl games this year.
Go WAC!
Great win
Boise weathered all storms and I don't know anybody that felt like this game was in reach for FS. The home team plugged away like they should have. Three 60 yard td's is an obvious fix. I was surprised Fresno State scored a td and had as many yards as they did. As everyone said, if FS couldn't stop the offense, they weren't going to be close. Thats what happened. Nice job Bronco's, very impressive win. See you in Ohio.
Player conduct
Is it me or are our players getting a little cocky? I think our players should celebrate their small and large victories but the last thing we need is a bunch of arrogant blowhards. Boise State is about class. We don't need anymore Byron Hout type conduct.
Broncos Rule
I knew the broncos would win, hell anyone who had doubts, Proved you wrong!!!! Way to go Broncos!!!!
I love it.
when we are so good and the WAC is so bad that winning by three scores is considered a nailbiting close game!
Close game? no. Exiting game..... YES!
What's with...
Coach Pat Hill, DJ Harper and Jaron Johnson? Coach Hill blew off Coach Peterson at the end of the game. Johnson missed two tackles on 60+ TD runs, got sucked in on the other 60+ TD run in a cover two situation leaving his half of the field wide open, received a pass interference penalty, and was continually beaten down the field by the Bulldog receivers. Was that just a case of cramps? I won't throw in the dropped interception because that was clearly the cramps in action. Can some one please tell us about Harper?
Jeron Johnson
I also noticed #23 making some rookie mistakes all night long. He needs to get his head back in the game.
I would place the blame on D-Coord Justin Wilcox
Our staff knew how good Matthews was going into this game, and after Matthews busted his first TD run, Wilcox kept on keeping on with his game plan, and after Matthews busted his 2nd TD run, Wilcox did nothing to change up his defense, which resulted in Matthews busting his 3rd 60+ yard TD run.
Sure, some of our guys missed some tackles, but they weren't in a good position which forced them to take poor angles at Matthews.
Not only that but the Fresno receivers were consistantly getting behind our D, and if it were not for the fact that the Fresno QB misfired on numerous passes, the outcome could have been different.
I hope that Wilcox takes a smuch blame as he's putting on the shoulders of his kids
I am worried about Harper
When they came out and did the knee test I was thinking ACL. Petersen never comments right away when the injury is severe, which is bad news for us.
The test they were doing
was a Varus and Valgus stress test, which tests the stability of the medial and lateral collateral ligaments. If those are the only tests they performed, it was not an ACL. BTW, the stress test for the ACL is called "Drawers".
Tests
In a quick field assessment of the knee all directions are tested=medial, lateral, posterior, and anterior for the following ligaments=MCL,LCL,PCL,ACL. As an orthopedist on the field all these tests should be performed to quickly identify the problem if it is one of those ligaments. I'm sure they did Anterior Drawers and Posterior Drawers along with the Varus and Valgus stress test and possibly a few meniscus tests before moving Harper. The one bad thing is I was at the discretion of the camera man and only saw a limited exam before they went to commercial. If it is a stretched ligament a Grade 1 or 2 can be quickly fixed with in a few weeks but a Grade 3 (complete tear) is season ending. I hope Harper doesn't have the later Grade. Great game Bronc's, nailbiter but kept me on the edge of my seat.
Well, ya
I've done my fair share of knee exams. I merely meant the only one I saw was the V/V. Although, the hit itself indicated ACL (you can tell he hyperextended it). So, I only went by what I saw. It didn't seem as bad as many I've watched, but I guess it was bad enough to ruin his season.
The game
I called every play of that game before it even happened. I knew exactly what the final score would be. I'm playing the Powerball tomorrow. When I win (which I will), I'll buy free drinks for everyone. That's right. A free 16 oz bottle of water for everyone at the Bingo hall on Monday evening. You can't beat that with a stick.
Of all the teams Fresno wanted to beat and would be up for, BSU had to be the one. Yet the Broncos come out with a 16 point victory in their backyard. Any way you look at it...very nice.
As for Mathews, whatta ya gonna do? The guy just tore it up tonight. It's gonna happen sometimes. But the Broncos didn't get flustered. They just kept playing and won the game.
Fresno Qb
Fresno QB just kept throwing it up for his receivers to go get... it worked out often for him, but overall his play was horrible.
Winston had a marvelous game... I loved the human missile blitz.
Murphy... what's the status of Canadian Bacon?
Spotty Showing
Boise's secondary simply couldn't handle Fresno's tall WR. Doesn't bode well against Tulsa. Winn and Venable were clearly the defensive POGs. Except for the picks - and that's on Fresno's QB - this was not a good performance by the LB's. Mackey (#45) for some reason played a lot of the game, and was not quick enough and instictive enough to evade getting consistently blocked out of the play. Great hustle displayed by Titus at a critical point in the game. In contentious games like this one, Harsin needs to direct the ball to Pettis at least fifteen times per game. Great blocks by Pettis shows he's becoming a complete player. Don't just save him for the endzone. They need to throw to Brockel a couple more times per game to keep the deeper ball in effect. Grades: Offense C- ; Defense C- ; Coaching C- ; Special Teams A-
give 'em some credit!!!
FANDAN...who are you? An NFL coach? There's a reason you're not the Bronco head coach, and Peterson is. He wins games!!! And after we score 51 points, how do you give an offense a C-?
Enjoy the wins everyone, and stop criticizing. They're not perfect in all aspects of the game, but it's Coach Pete's job to worry about perfection. Just enjoy the darn game. We won!!!
How Mathews "Tore 'Em Up"
Bishgish, in case you didn't also notice my compliments to the Broncos, please read my post again. If you want to challenge the substance of my post with substance, fine. But this was not a pretty performance by a defense that many people (myself included) were trying to assign nicknames this past week. Like you, I'm not a simple kool-aid drinking fan, I actually want the team to progress and improve. BTW, I'd grade Fresno C on offense (only thanks to Jeff Grady's improved play calling), D on defense, and F on special teams. Does that make you feel any better? But how did Fresno's comeback happen? For the entire game, Acrey had one tackle, Tevis had one tackle, Mackey had one tackle. Mathews is very good, but he's not 3-long-TDs good without some help by a some ineffective backers. If Coach Pete is in control as you indicate, he's having some serious words with Coach Choate around film sessions. On the bright side, Tevis gamely bounced back after issuing and receiving a huge hit. Bishgish, if people prefer some mindless pats on the back instead of some reality discussion, I'll happily stop raining on your rose-colored parade.
FANDAN
So you give the Broncos offense a C- and the Fresno offense a C? What are you spiking your kool aid with?
The linebackers were not very good last night, that was obvious. Your wisdom and insight are awesome! Have you scribbled your thoughts for Coach Pete to review? Bronco Nation begs for your help. The most winningest team this decade is stuck in mediocrity and needs you and your football prowess!
No one is disputing the Bronco defense had a rough time tackling and staying in the lanes. The heat sucked, and Mathews is very good. Its one game. Props to the players and coaches for rising and not shrinking when calls and plays went in the opposite direction. GO BRONCOS!
I Grade On A Curve
Fresno got no scoring help from their special teams or defense as did Boise.
Yep, for their talent, Fresno's 34 points was worth a strong C on offense. Admit it, this was perhaps the worst defensive game from Boise in two years (right along side last season's Nevada game). Take away Young's hustle play and kick return, - and how does the game look to you - the teams would possibly be still playing overtime. I'm happy to follow a top-10 team, and would like to see them stay there. You're just sitting back and crossing your fingers. The most winningest? . . . please.
Seriously, no one has
Seriously, no one has challenged your defense grade. It sounds like you are giving the offense a bad grade based on the defense's performance. I don't see how an offense that puts 45 points on the board deserves a C-.
Sorry, but the offense did
Sorry, but the offense did not put 45 points on the board. Don't forget special teams and defense-created points. Fresno's defense was not particularly sparkling.
Fact is, Boise offense had about half the points they scored against the Bulldogs last year. Boise must also use Pettis as a possession receiver more, if they want to improve their overall offensive efficiency, not to mention Kellen's QB efficiency rating. I think Doug Martin is ready to step up and take some of the serious RB load next week. AP just came out, and Boise is #8. How awesome is that? Who'd have thought that the Broncos would be ahead of Oklahoma, Ohio State and USC after week 3?
I'LL TAKE A SHOT AT
some of your points FANDAN!
First Boise's D minus 3 FRICKN PLAYS!!!!!!!
was very good against the dogs. The secondary was right there on every pass. BT got screwed on the PI call. The TD pass was as good a pass as can be thrown on that play.
Fresno's QB is going to be sore till probably wednesday because of all the shots he took. The OL for Boise played solid for the most part resulting in all the big plays. DJ and Avery's long runs. BSU I think got a shot in the polls becuase of their overrall team effort.
ADD ONE
more thing take away the 3 runs for Matthews I think around 194 yards... Fresno has 313 for the game bout on par with BSU's first 2 games.
Sometimes 3 Frickin plays is the difference maker
sometimes a single frickin play is the difference maker, but getting back to those 3 frickin plays you're talking about yes, they were 3 frickin playes, just like if it were not for our 3 frickin plays, Fresno could have won the game
BSU 51
FS 34
Minus frickin play #1 Harper's 60yd TD run & the XP -7
Minus frickin play #2 Avery's 67yd TD pass reception & XP -7
Minus frickin play #3 Avery's fumbled 74yd TD run recovered by Young & XP -7
Minus frickin play total number of points -21
So if you take away 3 of our frickin plays, the score would have been:
BSU 30
FS 34
Not to mention that the Fresno receivers were consistantly getting behind and burning our secondary all night and if it were not for Ryan Colburn's inability to throw a decent pass, FS would have scored some additional TD's to add to their point total of 34, so while we won, it wasn't a pretty win, so our D has alot of cleaning up to do before they get to BG
DBS WERE NOT
getting burned all night.
yes they were
It's just that the Fresno QB couldn't hit them and when he did hit them, the Fresno receivers had to make circus catches, but our Db's were in fact getting burned, but it's difficult to admit it or see it when the passes are overthrown and underthrown
IF YOUR
talking about "behind our dbs all night" meaning the db was right in front of the reciever then ok but if you want to see "open all night" go watch a rerun of the BYU vs FSU game.
Actually...
You do realize it's possible for a DB to get burned even if the ball A) wasn't throw, B) was overthrown and C) was underthrown
do you not?
DON'T CHANGE
your meaning of "getting behind the dbs all night" to something that doesn't matter when a pass isn't thrown. cmon now!
**duplicate**error***code3637
**duplicate**error***code36374748****
I'm not changing anything. The Fresno WR's were burning our DB's
I've you ever played teh game as a DB, or LB and thought to yourself "damn.. I'm glad they didn't throw to my guy because he burned me on that route"
Being a DB is more than just defending the pass when it's thrown just as WR's do more than just catch the ball.
WR's are an integral part of the running game, as are the DB's on the D-Side of teh ball. A big block downfield might be the difference difference in a short run and a first down run or possibly a touchdown run.
On running plays the WR need to ensure that he gets the jump on the snap and a good push off the LOS and gets a good block on the DB or LB to help the chances of a good run and Fresno's WR did a superb job of doing just that on each of Ryan Matthews' three 60+ yard TD runs, hence just another way a DB can get burned by a WR.
A good WR will make the big catches. A great receiver will make the big catches AND the big blocks down the field that result in big plays
People remember spectacular catches or TD catches, but nobody ever seems to remember the passes that weren't connected and if the Fresno QB could have hit some of his wide open WR's that night, it would have been a tougher game than it already was because the Fresno WR's were playing a great game and ran good routes and were getting open all night long, it's just that the QB couldn't hit them. For instance, early in the game Fresno QB, twice...missed a wide open WR who was all alone in our secondary, so how's that for them getting behind our DB's, plus, when the Qb is in trouble, WR's have to come back to their QB which is when a lot of Fresno's catches were made which might have made it appear as if they weren't open
(No subject)
Re: BSU I think got a shot in the polls because .......
BSU went from #10 to #8 not because of their overall team effort against Fresno but because #3 USC and #7 BYU lost over the weekend.
YOU MISSED THE POINT
they moved up and stayed ahead becuase as a whole they played pretty well and voters took notice.
What the AP voters took notice to is that USC and BYU lost
had USC and BYU not have lost their games, odds are we would have stayed at #10.
..the headlines around the rest of the country pertain to what Ryan Matthews accomplished against our highly rated D in Fresno's 51-34 losing effort.
MIAMI
JUMPED 11 spots right behind BSU and both Ohio St. and Oklahoma shut out decent non-AQ teams and both finished behind BSU. hence my point.
Miami jumping up 11 spots is just as asinine as BYU jumping 11
We all know that the polls are screwed up and the fact that two different teams BYU and Miami, who were ranked #20 one week, end up jumping to #9 the next week after a big win. Yes two #20 teams in concecutive weeks both manage go from #20 to #9
Ohio State and Oklahoma both have a loss. BSU is undefeated.
I still don't see your point
