Strausser wants dominant, 'downhill' running game

Chris Strausser’s vision for the Boise State run game comes down to one word.

Downhill.

Strausser, the tight ends coach and run game coordinator, wants to turn the Broncos offense into something of a road grader.

“We’re not looking for a whole lot of sideline to sideline in our run game,” he said. “We want to see downhill. Guys being physical up front. Running backs breaking tackles, not dancing a lot. That’s when the big plays come. A lot of times guys get in the mindset, if they sit there and try to find these huge holes they’ll get a big play. What I want is we’re a dominant run game in the fourth quarter so we’re continually pounding and pounding. … By the end of the game, we’re coming off the ball and taking advantage of what (strength coach Tim Socha) did all summer long.”

The Broncos were happy with the progress they showed in the run game last week against Oregon. The stats weren’t necessarily pretty — 164 yards and 2.8 yards per carry — but the Broncos ran it 59 times, had 89 offensive snaps and held the ball for 42 minutes, 32 seconds. Sacks and fumbles also dented the average.

“It was a good first step,” Strausser said, “but we still have a long way to go.”

Strausser works with offensive line coach Scott Huff to develop the game plan for run plays. Offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin and wide receivers coach Brent Pease develop the game plan for pass plays. That’s how Boise State has split up the game-planning for years.

Harsin calls the plays, though, and Strausser hopes he sticks with the run even when it doesn’t seem to be working — like he did last week.

“There are a lot of times that the runs aren’t pretty in the first and second quarter — for everybody,” Strausser said. “We’ve just got to keep banging through it and trusting what we’re doing. (Harsin) did a great job.”

A Good Running Game is Great

Just don't forget that once you get that run established, it opens up the play action to Titus or Austin deep. I like the concept of chewing up clock time with the run, (as long as you have the lead) but I still love it when the Broncos put up major points on the board.

Running Game

Please don't get it twisted....Kellen Moore is a passing Machine....with some talented Receivers.......Passing would've got us more than 19 pts (we're way better than a 19 pt team)......If we call plays that work, instead of plays we want to work, GAME OVER for our opponents....we DO have some plays that are almost guarantees.....Football is not a nice sport, so why be nice and let the opponent have a chance OR ray of hope...........GO BRONCOs to a BCS Game.....I love our running backs but Don't hold ourselves or Moore down.....

RUN UP SCORE

We need to score some points in this game to prove our dominance.

Modified logo

Broncos run...broncos jump and sail through the air, both require the other for max effect. JUST AN IDEA though...can we consider dropping the letters from the helmet logo? i mean...WHO DOESN'T KNOW BSU by NOW, EH??? What with all the upsets and bowls and put-downs through-out the media...the success of the program is seen in it's combination of lovers AND haters!!! Maybe time to just go with the image and not the verbals, at least on the helmets. Or as a concession, maybe do like LSU or USC and just have BSU somewhere there? Bottom line, agreed that there's truly national recognition, now...right? Let the program show the growth!

Run Game

Banging away for 2 to 3 yard gains isn't sexy and often not very exciting. But Coach thinks it is the thing to do. So be it. I just have to wonder how two tailbacks at 5'9" and moderate weight can stand up to it for four quarters. Coach Pete wants to keep them in the game for longer periods. That would be difficult even if they were 6'3", 240 and could bench press a Buick. But then again I guess I have forgotten that kids at that age think they are indestructable.

I am glad you all aren't coaching.

You win football games by controlling the line of scrimmage.

My take

The reason BSU ran the ball so much was UO was set up to defend the pass. With Ian gone and Kellen being such a great pass QB, Kelly tried to second guess BSU's offensive game plan. Harsin, reading UO's D decided to run the ball b/c UO players were so far back. It let BSU run the ball more than pass. Yes, not as effective and resulting in a low score but it gets the job done and devours the time off the clock. Also, anyone think Harpers the better running back? Avery's a little small and got smacked around a lot. Poor kids going to get hurt.

How bout this for a media frenzy?

Coach Pete makes room for L. Blount to second-string the Broncos for the rest of the season? Then they could rotate three backs...tap...tap...BAM! tap...tap...BAM! Everybody wins?? idk, just thinkin out loud. GO BRONCS!!!!

No Pity...

Let the running backs coach and Harsin implement their plan and execute. At this point we should be able to trust in the BSU coaching staff without comments from the peanut gallery. As for Avery, do him a favor and save your pity; he's better off without it.

Running Game

Until we recruit some hardnosed, blue collar, downhill running backs, no one should utter a word about BCS. We're not ready to run with the big dogs. Remember that it was Ian J. who carried us on his capable shoulders to the Fiesta Bowl. Three yards and a cloud of dust gets it done. Remember the caveat about passing. There are three possible outcomes and two of them are bad.

Then he should build a sloping field both ways...
