Boise State starting nickel Winston Venable talked to his brother, Will, the other day about what to expect from a big-game atmosphere. Will is an outfielder for the San Diego Padres.
Venable is a junior-college transfer, so Thursday’s game against Oregon will be his major-college debut.
“He told me about one of his first games when he got called up,” Venable said. “He was in Milwaukee or something. There was a crazy amount of fans. The bases were loaded and he was up to win the game. And he felt comfortable. He knew he was supposed to be there.”
The result: “I think he ended up striking out,” Venable said.
But, Venable said, that’s not the point.
“He said, ‘When you’re out there, you’ll know you’re in the right spot,’ ” Venable said. “ ‘Of course, it will be fun to play into the fans, but it won’t get to you as much as you think.’ That was nice to hear from him.”
Venable came to Boise State with the expectation of making an impact this year. He told the coaches during the recruiting process that he didn’t want to redshirt.
He expects to share playing time Thursday with sophomore backup Doug Martin and junior third-stringer Jason Robinson.
They’re replacing All-WAC first-teamer Ellis Powers.
“There’s no doubt about it that we think we can do what Ellis did,” Venable said. “… I see all three of us getting some good playing time. I wouldn’t see a game where we’re all not in there at some point.”
Venable’s goal: Knock safety Jeron Johnson off the top of the tackles chart.

Sophomore linebacker Aaron Tevis will start the season opener for the second straight year. Last year, he was an injury replacement and he starred against Idaho State, but he wasn’t much of a factor the rest of the year.
He should be a consistent part of the defense this year — but he’ll have to fend off a challenge from freshman J.C. Percy.
“Just have to not be complacent,” he said. “You have to work knowing that someone’s breathing down your neck. You’ve got to bring you’re A-game every practice.”
Linebackers coach Jeff Choate has pushed the linebackers to go for the big play this season. He has said many times that he’d rather his players do something wrong and make a play than do everything right and not make a play.
“They don’t want you to play having a fear of failure,” Tevis said. “If you have a chance to make a play, go out there and try it.”

Former Boise State and Eagle High tight end Jeb Putzier was cut Tuesday by the Denver Broncos. Former Boise State wide receiver Julian Hawkins was cut by the Dallas Cowboys.
The Vikings and Raiders have made some cuts today and Ian Johnson, Vinny Perretta and Chris O'Neill are safe so far. The final cuts are Saturday.

Winston Venable
This article failed to mention that Winston's father is the first base coach for the Portland Beavers of the PCL. Last Friday after the manager was thrown out, I saw him arguing against the worst live call I have ever seen, the dreaded phantom home run. Good luck Winston, Boise is a football crazy town. I bet your dad really misses seeing your brother everyday.(Will Venable played for the Beavers the last two seasons.) Sorry the Ducks have to start your season with a whippin.
Oregon
Venable can;t cover and doesn't know the defense
Being born and raised in
Being born and raised in Boise... but a true Duck. This is a hard time to be a football fan of both schools.
Sorry the Broncos have to start their season with a whippin.
Being Born and raised in denial
Yeah but I bet at the old office you tell them you're rooting for the Broncos!!! Don't you? Be honest!!
spread just keeps moving
weird that the spread is dropping on the game. everyones putting money on the ducks. down to merely the home field advantage at this point. on a neutral field oregon's the favorite. i guess the people paid attention to the fact that boise is 1-1 vs bcs opponents on its home turf.
BSU home record aginst BCS teams
Hey Duxophonypil the record is actually 2-1 with 2 wins over Oregon State( Z's sophmore and senior years) and 1 loss to Wazzu. Should be a great game to bad Chip has to start out with a loss.
Does
H-Bowl 2005 against BC count as another loss to a BCS team even though it's not during reg. season?
Doesn't matter
If you count H-Bowl 2005 then you will have to count the H-Bowl where the Broncos beat Iowa State (Can't remember what year). It's a wash.
just proves that no one cares, outside of boise
im not a boise fan. still not an impressive stat. beating beavo nation twice.
is jeron johnson going to run over and spear chip in the head when hes not looking?
any duck fans that go to the game, beware when you are on stairs. bronco fans are of the mindset that its cool to push opposing fans down stairs. the fans take the mentallity of their team.
And you know this how?
And you know this how? Seems to me we aren't the only ones that've come into your house and beat you. "Beavo nation" has as well... I guess you just look down on any team that can beat the ducks. That's one way of looking at it. And I suppose you have personal experience with BSU fans to back up you ignorant claims? Didn't think so...
home loss
Every team that plays a legitimate schedule is going to have losses at home. Florida lost at home last year. No team from a legitimate conference goes 64-2 at home over 10 years. Not USC, Florida, LSU, Texas, Oklahoma, etc. Its laughable that you bs-who fans think you would have that same record in a real conference. You would be a bottom feeder.
So when the Ducks lose on
So when the Ducks lose on the blue is that gonna make BSU look better or Oregon weaker?
I guess if by bottom feeder,
I guess if by bottom feeder, you mean one who can beat the ducks and the Beavers, then yes, we'd be bottom feeders...
yes you would
I mean one that got spanked by Georgia and are about to get spanked by the Ducks
Well, I don't know about
Well, I don't know about getting spanked. Yes, the ducks may win, they may not, but it should make for one heck of a game. I for one am stoked... Maybe you'll need a spanking afterword Macy girl? Let's see if your woman enough to come back here if the Ducks lose...
no it wont be close
Ducks 48-16
Horra
why did you change your name? The posts are the same, I know its you. Hahahahaha
Finally
you spelled Horra's name right. Get a new script or take your head out of your ...?
Whatever???? I've had the
Whatever???? I've had the same name for a long, long time. Longer than you Macy..
You duck fans are pathetic...
BSU fans hear year in and year out about how they live in the past and on and on from fans of supposed "real" programs like U of O, and yet, when asked to explain why you think your Ducks can win at BSU when they couldn't beat BSU at home, you reply with reference to a Georgia game that happened prior to any of the current players entering the program? The coaches were different then, the program was different then.
Open your eyes to reality.
The "Oregon is more Talented" argument is weak too. How do you figure? If they were so much more talented why couldn't they seal the deal at home last year? Reality: Oregon is more hyped by it's own fan base, which is definitely larger than BSU's fan base.
This will be a great game. Can't wait!
AGREED
its quite simple.
Unlike Coach Pete, I am looking ahead to the next win....
...as I personally can't wait to get beyond this overhyped game and look at our next opponent on the schedule - after we bend a few beaks of course. I just hope the Miami Ohio fans aren't like the Oregon whiners and post the Youtube videos of the alleged late hits our players made on the Oregon players. :D
