CWI's reversal of fortune: 3,400 students (and rising)
Just eight months ago, the College of Western Idaho was looking at enrollment well short of initial projections.
The grim forecasts led one local blogger — government watchdog Dave Frazier — to declare the as yet-unopened community college a "faltering venture."
Times have changed quickly. With 3,400 students, CWI's enrollment has nearly tripled from its inaugural January total of 1,195.
With that comes a new problem, and not necessarily a bad problem: dealing with the walkup traffic that tends to show up at the beginning of a community college semester.
“We know that nationally there’s a trend that community colleges will get 40 percent of their enrollment the two weeks prior to school, so if we’re sitting with 3,000 students now and that’s only 60 percent of the total we’re going to get, how are we going to handle the influx in the next two weeks?” CWI President Bert Glandon told the Idaho Business Review.
“There is no precedent for this. Someone referred to it as drinking out of a fire hose — there is just no history for this anywhere. We are really kind of pioneering new ground everyday.”
In fairness, we're now getting our first complete set of numbers quantifying the demand for a community college in Southwest Idaho. This is the first "traditional" academic year for CWI; fall classes opened a week ago. The new numbers also reflects the shift of Selland College of Applied Technology programs from Boise State University to CWI.
Two years ago, Ada and Canyon county voters raised their property taxes to create CWI — a 68 percent vote of confidence. Supporters were swayed by a mobilized and persuasive campaign that pointed out that Southwest Idaho was one of the largest regions in the nation without a community college. The fall enrollment numbers suggest the voters were right in addressing this shortcoming.

But it will always be an underfunded effort. It is in desperate need of permanent buildings and faculty, both of which will be in short supply for years (perhaps decades) to come. Idaho is not an education friendly state, despite the demonstrated need and opportunity.

once again KR, you are leaving out important information to skew the story to your opinion.
included in that 3,400 are students that would have attended Larry Selland College AT BSU.
The fact that CWI absorbed 30 Selland College programs from BSU is the bulk of that increase. The rest,,, lets' call it the economy, and more than likely they would've attended somewhere. Bottom line is, taxpayers are further subsidizing marginal college students. Let's see how many of those students on the lower spectrum are able to stay enrolled through the end of the semester.

Let's see what the enrollment #s are from our other fine institutions of higher lernin.
Last year BSU increased enrollment by less than 1%.
KR did mention...
the merging of Selland with CWI. And community colleges usually are open admission institutions. But retention is a major issue - will CWI focus on retention and make the necessary resources available?
Will the rock star save the day? And what about Naomi???
PS Will the show Community actually fly in Boise or will it take two years for the truth to sink in?

There is no life in Idaho...it is a mirror site on god's server. You were dreaming but it is over. Go to your residence and await our commands and THEN we will restore control...
Outstanding example: How Idaho trashes its own resources...
and fails to invest in her own people. Now the economy's in the tank, and CWI's a 'green shoot" itself. Honestly, these kids would be better off with a $10K stipend & one way ticket to Texas. There will not be anything for them when they get out in 2-3 years.
Folks, this is what 30+ years of deliberate denial & lack of investment will get you.
