Program set on Seven Devils

The drive to the Seven Devils Mountains out of Riggins is straight up. I had a four-cylinder pickup the last time we visited there and we had the camper on the truck.

I was in first gear in some of the steep spots on the hairpin turns on the 17-mile road from U.S. 95 to the top. But, the drive is worth it because you get up to Seven Devils Campground, which is at the base of 9,000-foot peaks. From the campground, you can jump on trails to alpine lakes. The campground is a good base camp if you just want to hike this beautiful high country.

Anyway, if you want to learn more about the Seven Devils, there's a program at 7 p.m. Sept. 2 at REI in Boise. Local author Gary Jones will present a slide show on the area.

He'll give tips on great routes to explore the area, including trails and backcountry routes. Gary will also share information on fishing, history, and mining areas to explore.

REI is at 8300 West Emerald. The program is free and registration is not required.
