Otter asks me whether I'm buying wolf tag
| Share |
Gov. Butch Otter turned the tables on me today and put me on the spot.
He said in an interview Wednesday he planned to buy a tag himself and go hunting.Otter the asked me if I was going to buy a wolf tag.
I couldn't argue that it wasn't a fair question.
I said I was struggling with it. I keep thinking about Aldo Leopold's story about the female wolf he shot in New Mexico.
"In those days we had never heard of passing up a chance to kill a wolf. In a second we were pumping lead into the pack, but with more excitement than accuracy; how to aim a steep downhill shot is always confusing.
When our rifles were empty, the old wolf was down, and a pup was dragging a leg into impassable side-rocks.
We reached the old wolf in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes. I realized then, and have known ever since, that there was something new to me in those eyes—something known only to her and to the mountain.
I was young then, and full of trigger-itch; I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, that no wolves would mean hunters' paradise. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view."
Aldo Leopold in A Sand County Almanac
I'm not as excited today about hunting bears though it was one of the most interesting hunts of my youth. I trapped fox, coyote and raccoon in my teens and 20s.
As is the case with most game, I enjoy hunting now more than I enjoy killing.
Otter told me buy the tag anyway just to be ready. I haven't decided yet but at least a wolf tag goes toward Fish and Game management, which is a pretty convincing argument to me.

Duh
Barker, just cuz you buy one doesn't mean you have to fill it.
Any of the tags are souvenirs if nothing else. Think of it as a ticket to the Presidential Inaugeration (or Governor's Ball in this case). It might even be a collectible item some day.
I recommend you buy one, ask the Governor to autograph it, and frame it for your cubicle. duh!
When I fire you after I buy your newpaper, you might need to sell that wolf tag for a few bucks(deer not dollars).

As far your empathic Leopold story--- 'those days' also apply to many other hunts. Mass shooting into a flock of geese instead of picking one, shooting every badger to reduce broken horse legs, killing porcupines to saves trees, etc. Now that we have "game management", those days are gone.
You and your buddies at Western Wasteshed Project (with their Greenfire Preserve) might try to find some NEW material.
Sheesh!
If you don't take the Governor's offer to bag a wolf does it mean you also have to give up your NRA membership?
Bagging wolves...
Paper, plastic or reusable?
Umm, reusable is OUT. No Earth-friendly bags on this.

Wolves Wolves Wolves
Inquiring minds still want to know what ever happened to the bighorn sheep ram that was killed near Riggins. Did he ever spread pneumonia from the domestic sheep to the rest of the bighorns? Did they all die or get sick?
Wolves Wolves Wolves
Apparently (hopefully) the ram was determined to be sick with some other disease.
But mostlymike...
Given the press while the ram was being chased by Fish and Game for almost three weeks and all the talk about him taking domestic sheep disease back to his herd, don't you think the "rest of the story" should be given at least equal time? Don't you think it is irresponsible of the press to only present a lopsided account without acknowledging what really happened?
We don't need responsible journalism here at the Statesman.
Just gross graphic stories about gay senators.

This was my post 8/12 for 'the rest of the story':

Barkers' Dark Side
Most notably,,,, that tid bit article was 8/12.
Has Barker done a piece about it yet? No.
I recall he did 2 blog entries about it and full article when the sheep was sick and looked like domestic sheep caused a bighorn to be killed. Of course that idea supported the liberal environmental anti-grazers.

The reality of the dead ram, supports my previous point that 'WE' don't know enough about the sheep/bighorn connection. But then, I'm not a journalist...
Too bad Rocky isn't an elected journalist...
I would vote for udapimp!
But mostlyMike. . .
Of course, I think the complete story should be told. Why would you think I wouldn't?
I see now that Rocky has followed up with a blog on it.
Otter Asks Me ...
Dear Rocky: I was touched by your story. You are a more thoughtful person than I had supposed. It is not easy to resist peer pressure, but you should do what your heart tells you is right for yourself.
Do what will help you politically.
Buy a tag and tell the governor.
If you want to support F&G "management"
buy the tag but don't use it to kill a wolf.
Just don't or do and move on. please...

So?
What's the verdict Rocky? Did you buy a wolf tag?
Not yet
but I'm still thinking about helping out fish and game budget.
You don't make enough to buy one! Work for Simplot LOL

Cheap talk
Just send them a check if you feel so compelled about "helping out".
You might help out IDFG more by...
buying an Otter tag.
Why Wolves
These are great and wonderful creatures of God. What right do you have to kill one or hundreds of wolves. God is going to get you for doing this awful thing! Wake up Idaho and let nature deal with wolves. Your state will be the better for it.
Keeps down all the going # p@stAl # maybe?

No need to jump to a hasty conclusion Buffalo.
How about this hasty conclusion:
News flash-
It appears the wolf advocates have continued to go to extremes by killing 6 pups in an effort to provide propaganda for the upcoming Judicial review. One wolf lover was overheard saying, "six to save 220". But then she started howling uncontrollably.
Wolf in ACTIVIST'S clothing!
