Saturday nonprofit events: community gardens, Nelle Tobias awards, ghosts, cupcakes and more
Saturday is one of those days when there's almost too much cool stuff going on in the nonprofit, community-centric world. But you can take your pick.
Plant and garden lovers:
The Idaho Horticulture Society is announcing the winners of its first annual community garden contest at a special celebration, 11:30 a.m., Saturday at the Idaho Botanical Garden. Local gardeners will receive prizes for best front yard, best community garden, best water-wise landscape and best community improvement project. Bet you can pick up some new, creative ideas for your own garden projects, too.
Fund for Idaho/Nelle Tobias
The Fund for Idaho, a public nonprofit foundation, will present the Nelle Tobias Award for Philanthropy to Mary Lou and Scott Reed from Coeur d’Alene, 10:30 a.m., Saturday at The Cabin, 801 S. Capitol Blvd., Boise. The public is welcome; just drop the Fund folk an RSVP at their website.
The award, named for celebrated Idaho philanthropist and simple living advocate, Nelle Tobias, is meant to honor those who have shown "extraordinary generosity and passionate vision for a better world."
The Reeds were nominated by, among others, Rick Johnson from the Idaho Conservation League and Terry Harris from the Kootenai Environmental Alliance. The Margaret W. Reed Foundation, which the Reeds direct, has supported progressive environmental and social justice work in Idaho for many years. The Reeds’ philanthropic interests have paralleled their activism.
Good cause garage sale
Stop by a garage sale to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday at 10677 W. Highlander (off S. 5 Mile) in Boise. All the proceeds will benefit the society. Info: 562-1690.
Let them eat (cup)cake for TrICA
This event has gotten a lot of attention, but I didn't think it would hurt to remind you all of the Cupcake Collective competition and tasting event, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday at the Linen Building, 1402 W. Grove St. It’s a bargain — only $5 to enter the competition or attend as an eater. Kids 3 and younger get in free. And the money benefits the Treasure Valley Institute for Children's Arts.
Boise's inaugural cupcake fest will include a contest awarding Best Tasting, Best Visual, Youth and Honorary Mention cupcake kudos. Prizes are $100 and a trophy for first place and $50 for runner-up. The Honorary Mention winner will receive a surprise gift.
The event also includes live music, a live video feed from a CupcakeCamp event held simultaneously in Belfast, Ireland, students from Kids Are Special People daycare performing and teaching the Cupcake Dance, magician Matt McCarter, balloon twisting and lemonade stand.

Paranormal in the Park
Now this is intriguing. The International Paranormal Reporting Group is meeting for an "evening of conversation," 5-9 p.m., Saturday at Municipal Park, 500 S. Walnut St. in Boise. All are welcome, and invited to bring their questions, stories, and real accounts of ghosts and the paranormal. Bring ghost photos, too, if you have them. The evening will include a raffle, and the chance to investigate ghosts at a historic location in Idaho. Need more info?: 899-6131.
