Oregon to appear on cover of Sports Illustrated's college football preview

From the Associated Press:

EUGENE, Ore. — Sports Illustrated's annual college football preview features the Oregon Ducks on one of its four regional covers.

Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and center Jordan Holmes will be on the cover of the edition that reaches homes and newsstands in the West. The other teams featured on regional covers are Penn State, Oklahoma State and Ole Miss.

A Sports Illustrated photographer came to Eugene last month to shoot the photo of Masoli and Holmes.

That ought to get a nice reaction from local SI subscribers. SI does have Boise State ranked No. 9 and the Ducks at No. 11.

• Boise State is favored by 5.5 points in the Sept. 3 season opener against Oregon, according to VegasInsider.com. Figured you might be interested.

I thought the Broncos would be favored by about four points, for whatever that's worth.

• Speaking of whatever it's worth, ESPN.com college football writers Mark Schlabach and Bruce Feldman both predict that Boise State will meet Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl this season.

Both forecast Florida vs. Texas in the national championship game.

As for the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl, Schlabach likes Nevada vs. BYU. Feldman goes with Fresno State vs. Minnesota.

Curse?

Isn't there a curse associated with being on the cover of SI? I guess we'll see in a few weeks.

Curse

Oregon was last on the pre-season cover the year we beat Colorado in the Fiesta Bowl and ended up #2 in the nation. We should have played Miami in the Rose Bowl but the BCS formula was flawed. We at least could have given them a better game than Nebraska.

Can someone please answer

Can someone please answer one question for me. If BSU is such a power house team then why will a win over Oregon be the schools biggest home field win? I think BSU is a very good team but in no way are they a top 10 ranking team with the schedule they play.

IT AIN'T and THEY ARE

Please to refrain from chicken counting until they are battered, fried and dipped in sweet and sour sauce with fried rice. Order Up!

Duck Fan

The only consistent thing about Duck Fan is win or lose they still always post!

Win- hahahaha we kicked the crap outta you, etc. Your team sucks, you shouldn't even be D-1, your team is a joke.

Lose- Maybe someone can help me recall. 4TH string, injured, officials, lack of motivation, something like this.

Please don't forget that the

Please don't forget that the Blue Turf confused them so much they did not know ground from sky and they crashed and burned like a bunch of "wild ducks" ho - ho.

Ummmmm that game was played

Ummmmm that game was played at Autzen Stadium.
And they(Oregon) had a nice little rally going when the clock expired...kinda like BSU against Boston College.

Anyone notice the cover?

Ducks may be on it but BSU is ranked ahead of them..... Yay for the 11-1 Ducks!

Politics may have played a part there

I mean, you can't really have a non-BCS team on the cover of SI, even if they were higher ranked.

How can you justify a mid-major top 10?

You can't. Unless they have an extremely tough schedule, They should be no higher than 15. I don't care how "good" they are...if they schedule Patsy's then they have all season to build that ranking. You're taking away a BCS birth for an actual deserving team.

Seriously, it's getting old

Every powerhouse plays a few patsies. Let's look at "powerhouse" opponents for this next season:

USC - San Jose St
Alanama - North Texas, Florida International
Florida - Charleston Southern, Troy, Florida International
Georgia - Tennessee Tech
Oklahoma - Idaho St
Texas - Louisiana Monroe, Wyoming, Central Florida
Ohio St - Toledo
Penn St - Akron, Temple

Even the Pac-10 has its scrub teams. Well, see how much bragging Oregon does when it has a 4 loss season (Boise, Utah, Cal, USC).

Seriously, it's getting old...

Yeah, like associating your team with actual powerhouses that have credibility every year for the conference they play in...nobody else in the college football community puts BSU in the powerhouse category...only those hatched out of irrigated yellow potato fields in Idaho...lol. I think what you're trying to say here is that several mid-majors and a few WAC teams, just not Boise State, are willing to play against excellent programs--even if it's only for a pay day (i.e. VT next year). Those four teams that oregon plays say more about it's program and season than every school you played last year and this year combined. Want respect...it'll take more than week one..lol. You'll see...

You can't compare conference schedules

Comparing a PAC-10 schedule to a WAC schedule is stupid. You give yourselves credit for playing 9 BCS teams every season compared to Boise State's 1 BCS team. Well, of course you place more BCS teams every season, you are in a friggin' BCS conference! Even Baylor and Kentucky are BCS teams, but they suck as bad as Washington and UCLA.

But, that's the point. I expect to hear BCS-elitists say crap about Boise regardless of who they play, because of their in-conference schedule which cant be helped. Let's say Boise scheduled Baylor, Washington St and Kentucky. Do those 3 BCS teams make the SOS better, even though they've all sucked for a couple years? No, Boise would still hear "aw, your schedule was weak". Well, I would rather see Boise State play only Oregon and a few decent non-BCS teams in a season than play 3 bottom-dwellers from BCS conferences.

My comparison was to show that even the "big" schools play their patsies. Look at the two teams that played in the NC last season. What do their non-conference schedules look like? Do they go after other "big" schools? No, they play cupcakes. I'm really sure Idaho State has a good chance to beat Oklahoma this year.

Oregon

I don't see Oregon on your "patsy" list...because we play a real schedule this year. The SEC always schedules a bunch of ballerinas. That's right -- SEC is the most overrated conference.

Ya, that's why they werent included.

Oregon has a good schedule this year. But, is it too good? We'll just see.

Of course, this wasn't a complete list. It was just a list of the "powerhouses", of which I do not think Oregon is included in. When they can win their conference at least twice in three years, then I'll consider them a contender. Until then, they are nothing special. They are as irrelevant as Florida St right now. Nobody outside of their town really cares.

Boise State's biggest obstacle isn't Oregon

BSU's biggest obstacle going into this season will be managing the expectations put upon them.

Boise State-Oregon is huge game for both teams, but the Broncos have MUCH more riding on that game. Oregon obviously wants to win, but they're assured that a loss doesn't derail their season. A loss to Boise State doesn't impact Oregon's ability to win a Pac-10 title or get to the Rose Bowl.

Boise State, on the other hand, knows the entire season is riding on this one game. A loss to Oregon virtually knocks them out of the BCS debate--and the coaches and players know it. That's an awful lot of pressure to contend with, and I believe Boise State's ability to diffuse that pressure will ultimately determine the game.

That's actually a pretty cool cover

BSU better have some magic left in the tank because they are definitely going to need it to get past the Ducks. This is one Vandal fan that will be at the game rooting for BSU, but anyone on this board that thinks a pre-season ranking means anything, or that the game will be anything less that 4 quarters of brutal war (especially after the cheap shot in the last game), ought to move out of the orange and blue room in their mom's basement, shave off the mullet, and lay off the hooch for a while.

I hate to agree with a

I hate to agree with a Vandal - but well stated. Should be a great match up.

The unis look like some wacked out sci-fi sports movie anyhow.

I actually like the unis, BTW. The black is much better that green (no offense to Pack fans). We'll see first hand what Phil Knight's money can buy in a few weeks.

OK

the black uni's look good but what's up with the wings on the shoulder pads. Maybe Boise should put horse shoes on their shoulder pads cause that's what they'll do to Oregon, horse kick their Arsenic and watch Oregon fly away with their little shoulder pad wings.

I read it was a team preference and carried over this year.

I can't decide whose uniforms are worse . . .

Boise State's or Oregon's. They're both really hideous.

You'd likely howl louder if they didn't wear any.

Ranked

BSU is ranked because of the conference they play in. Enough with the Blue field already. How sweet would natural grass be, University of Montana can pull it off.

The blue field is an icon

Lots of teams (college and professional) have their icons. Wrigley Field has the ivey-covered wall. The RedSox stadium has the Big Green Monster. Well, Boise State has a blue field. Many years ago, college football fans never knew anything about Boise State's football team EXCEPT that they played on a blue field.

Not every team can get away with it. Oregon would have to chose between green (regular grass) or yellow (dead grass). Would you want to play on a red USC or Fresno St field? No. Teams couldnt use gold, as it would make the field just look weird. No team could use blue, as it would just be copying Boise State. Maybe Florida or Tennessee could use Orange, but that may be hard on the eyes. Hm, not sure what other colors would work. Purple for TCU?

So, the field for Boise State gives the university their icon. And, it has worked for the past 23 yrs. AND, it looks good! Why should Boise State go back to a green field and become just like every other team? This gives them their own personality, and the Bronco Nation loves it.

Ha....

It most certainly doesn't look good. It looks ridiculous! A lot worse than the Duck uniforms..thats for sure.

Ducks play the uniform angle to get recruits the legit way. BSU uses their smurf turf to give their team an unfair advantage. I think that's BS..and thats why I will never have respect for the Donkeys. Regardless of winning or losing.

Oh...a lot of other reasons too.

As shown a while back, YES, their are OTHER blue fields in US

Really?

I didn't know that. Well, they say imitation is the greatest form of flattery. So, who else has a blue field?

I think some college in Ohio at least, I don't have a link but..

That person Googled "blue turf", I would think.

Blue and Orange Broncos

Yeah, that's a real original idea. Wait...isn't there a blue and orange Bronco team in Denver?

Actually, it was original

Boise State (1932) was established well before the Denver Broncos (1960). So, apparently the NFL team copied the university, in mascot as well as colors. Did any pro team copy the University of Oregon? Maybe the NFL's Mighty Ducks. Oh wait, that was from a kids movie!

Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, since founding...

in 1962.

We have a mascot that runs all over the campus hill.

I thought Oregon fans weren't concerned about Boise State

Yet, most of those involved in this on-line survey think it's their most important game:

http://www.addictedtoquack.com/2009/8/9/982838/biggest-game-of-the-year

Reading the comments, they don't seem as confident (or angry) as those commenting in these Statesman forums.

Yeah...thats the difference between UO and Donkeys.

We can talk among ourselves and actually be intelligent and rational in our debate. BSU on the other hand is just delusional...thinking theey're the best at everything when they barely beat a frosh WR playing QB last year. I can really say you have a horrible fan base from what I've heard and seen. Actually the worst I've seen. I never get into it unless someone is completely ignorant and I've seen one rational BSU fan out of 50+

Biggest game of the season? My arse. We just want to smack you in the jaw for some revenge. Id rather win this game more than any other one thats not the Civil War..but the biggest game is always USC and OSU.

Here's to hoping at least one BSU fan can put up a rational debate thats somewhat intelligent! I've been waiting but it's hard to find. I'm definitely not holding my breath.

I am quite concerned

I've seen enough BSU games to give them respect. We will take care of USC...they don't know how to win on the road in Oregon. Fact=they haven't won in Corvallis or Eugene in 5 years, but BSU came to town and accomplished a rare feat last year.

Thx

4 being intelligent with your posts. I respect that unlike some other duck fans that are posting on the statesman. This will be a great game and may the best prepared team win. Last year I think it was BSU, cheap shots or not. Hope the Ducks new coach is ready for a very well coached and prepared BSU team. Good luck Ducks. I'm a fan of both teams. My Dad's a Duck but I'm a Bronco. I think he's going to loose $50 more bucks.

Utah State?

CNNSI predicted that Utah State would play in a bowl game this season.

Wow

You should stop reading that website. I'm from Logan, and I say 4-8 is the best case scenario for USU.

is it "Quack" or "Crack" Head?

So while you're on the subject of having some "intelligent" debate I'd love to see your logic and/or proof behind the blue field giving BSU an advantage. It's not that we haven't heard this crap before, it's just still as stupid as it ever has been.

It beats having a leaky septic tank out there.

Sept. 3

Any real football fan has to love what BSU did to Mobilehoma at the Fiesta Bowl. Huge numbers of duck fans love BSU because of great tradition and spirit. Got tickets and am looking forward to visiting the field. However I hate any cheap shots on either side of the ball. Seen to many great players done from it. No whining but both shots were uncalled for and a number of post all over the west not just oregon comment on BSU "cheap shots".
Just cinch the chin straps on quit talking smack and play hard and clean and whoever wins it will be a great game. If Oregon is in sync with the spread you will be treated to a thing of beauty.

Best college football game ever

Fiesta Bowl, BSU over Oklahomer.

It's no Icon

Are you kidding me. Aunt Ester claims that the blue smurf pee grass is in the same convo as the ivy at Wrigley or the wall at Fenway.

Get real Lamont. Unlike astroturf and other artificial surfaces all you get from the pee is...well you smell like pee.

Google it moron. Anyone who has ever played in that stadium comes away with a punch line, it's a joke, a highschool stadium.

Now Autzen Stadium is an icon, practically a National Treasure. Just listen to the Game Day crew after any of their many visits. They can't get enough. In fact, Autzen has made the top 20 places to watch a sporting event list that ESPN does for their mag, as well as SI's version many times.

Get real Rollo, blue turf and cowpies = a field of bad dreams.

As he shakes his head and laughs again at the absurdity of BJC fans.
