Atkinson suspended three games; Kirby Moore has fractured foot; Silsby out for year

By Chadd Cripe

Boise State freshman defensive tackle Michael Atkinson has been suspended for at least three games, coach Chris Petersen said Wednesday.

Atkinson was arrested earlier this month on a DUI charge after a car accident. He also was charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Atkinson will miss games against Oregon, Miami (Ohio) and Fresno State. Atkinson likely will be limited early in fall camp by an ankle injury (unrelated to the accident) as well.

“He’s got some things to do along with being suspended,” Petersen said. “If he takes care of what he needs to take care of for the team, for us, for the university, then we’ll get him back after that.”

— Freshman wide receiver Kirby Moore has a fractured foot and is week to week. He likely won’t be ready to go for the Oregon game.

— Senior fullback Andy Silsby, who tore an ACL in a softball game, will be out for the year. He will help coach. That leaves the Broncos with just four seniors.

— Offensive lineman Garrett Pendergast, who had arthroscopic knee surgery, will be limited early in camp, Petersen said.

— Capital High offensive lineman Bryant Thomas will be the Broncos’ only grayshirt out of this year’s recruiting class. He will join the Broncos in the winter, using one of the five or six scholarships the Broncos have available for the 2010 recruiting class.

— Former Oregon player Damon Griffin has joined the Boise State staff as the defensive graduate assistant. Griffin played for the Ducks under Petersen.

It's an appropriate suspension for Atkinson. Hopefully his absence doesn't cost us a game and he can stud up from this point on off-the-field and on it.

SAY IT AIN'T SO KIRBY!!! This may lead to a redshirt year rather than playing. I think if we see him after his foot heals then it means HE'S READY and we'll see good things by the end of the year, as in he may become the #2 guy.

I hope that goofy-aZZ softball game at Memorial Stadium was worth losing a senior player.......enough with the low budget, off season events like that one.

Just to clarify, Silsby was not injured in the charity game. It was a different softball game.

3 games

3 games for DUI and leaving the scene? Pretty light if you ask me.

Yeah, I'm with you on this

Yeah, I'm with you on this one. Wide receiver Titus Young was suspended last year shortly after being cited for an alcoholic beverage violation by police--nothing involving a vehicle. Not sure what other "violation of team rules" occurred--the reason Coach Pete noted for the suspension, but Young was certainly gone longer than 3 games. The DUI is bad enough but then leaving the scene also? 3 games?? You gotta be kidding!!!

3 games by thesavior?

Savior said, "Pretty light if you ask me." Yeah, you be right, some teams he'd be gone; but not at Oregon, those guys hardly ever miss a game when punished (the star players anyway). As for Coach Pete a three game suspension is a warning, next time won't be as sweet. And for a stud like Bacon missing out on Oregon and Fresno is a huge penalty. That's OK Michael take it out on Tulsa, Bowling Green, and Nevada
