Boise State freshman defensive tackle Michael Atkinson has been suspended for at least three games, coach Chris Petersen said Wednesday.
Atkinson was arrested earlier this month on a DUI charge after a car accident. He also was charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Both charges are misdemeanors.
Atkinson will miss games against Oregon, Miami (Ohio) and Fresno State. Atkinson likely will be limited early in fall camp by an ankle injury (unrelated to the accident) as well.
“He’s got some things to do along with being suspended,” Petersen said. “If he takes care of what he needs to take care of for the team, for us, for the university, then we’ll get him back after that.”
— Freshman wide receiver Kirby Moore has a fractured foot and is week to week. He likely won’t be ready to go for the Oregon game.
— Senior fullback Andy Silsby, who tore an ACL in a softball game, will be out for the year. He will help coach. That leaves the Broncos with just four seniors.
— Offensive lineman Garrett Pendergast, who had arthroscopic knee surgery, will be limited early in camp, Petersen said.
— Capital High offensive lineman Bryant Thomas will be the Broncos’ only grayshirt out of this year’s recruiting class. He will join the Broncos in the winter, using one of the five or six scholarships the Broncos have available for the 2010 recruiting class.
— Former Oregon player Damon Griffin has joined the Boise State staff as the defensive graduate assistant. Griffin played for the Ducks under Petersen.
