Virginia Tech would be great opportunity for Broncos; Predicting the WAC; State of Idaho getting love on ESPN
So far, there has been no confirmation from Boise State (or Virginia Tech, for that matter) of a Richmond television station’s report that the Broncos and Hokies will open the 2010 football season at FedEx Field in Washington, D.C.
Boise State spokesman Max Corbet referred calls to athletic director Gene Bleymaier, who is in charge of football scheduling. Bleymaier is out of the office for the week and did not respond to a text message.
Here’s the original story from CBS 6 in Richmond.
My take: This game is a great opportunity for Boise State and the kind of chance the Broncos don't get very often. They'd be playing a highly regarded opponent in an NFL stadium in a large East Coast city with lots of media attention and interest. The game will certainly be televised in a good time slot.
The exposure to college football poll voters will be immense and because the Hokies' program is so well respected, it will be a great chance for the Broncos to prove themselves.
Add in the excitement level for the fan base and the recruiting advantage to be gained from being a part of games like this (and this year's game vs. Oregon) and it's hard to find anything bad to say about the game.
I'll be interested to see what the payout is for Boise State.
• Here’s my predicted WAC football standings. The poll will be released next week at the WAC Football Media Preview in Salt Lake City.
1. Boise State: Is there really any other choice?
2. Nevada: The Wolf Pack offense can be devastating. But is the Nevada defense good enough?
3. Louisiana Tech: I have a lot of respect for what coach Derek Dooley has accomplished down in Ruston — and the best is yet to come.
4. Fresno State: The Bulldogs have a lot of question marks, especially at quarterback.
5. Hawaii: The Warriors are always tough at home, which should keep them in the middle of the WAC.
6. San Jose State: The Spartan defense could be pretty good and never underestimate coach Dick Tomey. I could see San Jose State surprising people this year.
7. Utah State: A new coach hopes to build on the Aggies’ late-season success from 2008.
8. New Mexico State: A new coach, a new offense, a new defense. Same results?
9. Idaho: The Vandals were outscored 513 to 235 last season and turned the ball over 32 times. They play New Mexico State in Las Cruces this year.
Offensive player of the year: Colin Kaepernick, Nevada.
This is a stats-driven award, and Kapernick is going to put up some very gaudy statistics with his run-pass abilities. An improved Boise State rushing attack, while good for the Broncos, might hurt quarterback Kellen Moore's chances of winning the award. I'm sure he'd take a WAC title over the award.
Defensive player of the year: Kyle Wilson, Boise State.
This is usually a hype award — and Wilson enters the year with the most buzz. Wilson's punt return skills will help, too, even if they shouldn't be considered as part of a defensive award. He doesn't have to put up big interception numbers because teams will be loathe to throw at him.
• Boise State defensive tackle Mike Atkinson was arrested Wednesday morning for driving under the influence.
• ESPN’s College Football Live will feature the state of Idaho on Wednesday as it continues its “College Football Live 50 State Tour” celebrating amateur football in every state. Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen, who played college football at Idaho State, will be the guest.
The show airs on ESPN at 1:30 p.m. Idaho will share the episode with Hawaii. ESPN is conducting polls on the best team in the history of the states, the best player and the best coach. As of late Tuesday, the 2006 Boise State team, former Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan and current Boise State coach Chris Petersen were winning the respective fan polls on ESPN.com.

Go Broncos
As much as I loathe to look too far ahead at schedules, this would be another great game for the Broncos to get. VT is always a tough opponent and would be an excellent start to the 2010 football season. If the report is true, then I just don't understand why BSU wouldn't comment on it. This should be something to be excited about.
C'mon Murph...
give the Vandals a break and get them out of the basement....I bet they can at least take NM state.
D.C.!?!
I live in D.C. - make this happen! D.C. is a great sports town.
Murph, you got it right.
No doubt the Vandals are the bottom feeders of the WAC !
Im a die-hard bronco fan but...
i like what coach akey is doin up in vandal country and they can get 2 conference wins maybe 3 and be the 7th best in the WAC. if akey can get the vandals to win 5 games this season i say he gets the WAC coach of the year award hands down.
