Laura Bush comes West for a river trip
Former First Lady Laura Bush is floating down the Rogue River in Oregon.
Mrs. Bush is on a four-day, 40-mile float through one of the lower 48 states' wildest rivers, similar to our own Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Unlike the Salmon, she isn’t sleeping on the ground.
The area has five lodges that boaters get to stay after an exciting day on the water.
Mrs. Bush is with a group of friends known as the “Midland Five,” women who all grew up in Midland, Texas, who get together for a vacation annually, said Brad Niva, owner of Rogue River Wilderness Adventures.
“Two of the ladies have done this trip before,” Niva said.
“They were really excited,” Niva said. “They’ve done the Grand Canyon together, the Yampa and now the Rogue. It seems like they focus on national parks.”
The crew is expected to visit Crater Lake National Park before they’re done.
Her father in law, former President George Bush, a devoted fisherman, floated the Rogue while vice president. He also floated the Middle Fork and the Clark’s Fork in Wyoming.
