Jana Kemp's independent governor's campaign: a statement on the direction of the Idaho GOP?
Jana Kemp is one of those politicians the Idaho GOP hardliners call a RINO — a "Republican In Name Only."
Kemp doesn't even call herself a Republican these days. The former one-term legislator is running for governor as an independent.
When a moderate such as Kemp decides she is better off as an independent, I think that says something about the direction and the orthodoxy of the Idaho Republican Party.
Kemp served only two years in the Idaho House of Representatives, from 2004 to 2006, but that was enough time to demonstrate her independent streak within a generally conservative 57-member GOP caucus. She was one of just five House Republicans to oppose a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage — a popular issue with the hardliners. When then-Gov. Jim Risch railroaded an ill-conceived plan to shift public school funding from the property tax to the sales tax, Kemp was one of only 11 House Republicans to vote no.
These votes may have rankled some of her House GOP colleagues, but they put Kemp in line with her moderate legislative district, which includes Garden City and Northwest Boise. Indeed, Kemp may have been too Republican for her district; she lost in November 2006 to Democrat Les Bock, who now serves in the state Senate.
With apologies to Han Solo, let's talk about the odds. One legislative term, and one unsuccessful re-election bid, doesn't bode well for a run for statewide office. Kemp is a long shot candidate, and acknowledges as much. In an interview with Betsy Russell of the Spokane Spokesman-Review, she likens her campaign to Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, a 50-1 shot, and the Fiesta Bowl-winning Boise State Broncos.
She's a long shot, and as veteran political observer Randy Stapilus accurately notes, long shots seldom win. That's why they're long shots.
But Kemp's odds aren't any worse running as an independent. She avoids a GOP primary that would be unwinnable — whether or not Gov. Butch Otter seeks re-election, and whether or not GOP hardliners prevail in their efforts to establish a "RINO-proof" closed party primary. It also allows her to take her promise of "collaborative problem-solving leadership" to a statewide general election audience.
Running as an independent is an unorthodox strategy, but it isn't a foolish one. And it is, ultimately, the result of just one politician's election calculus.
Beyond the niceties about collaboration and governing in the best interests of all Idahoans, let's connect a few dots.
Kemp, a former Republican office-holder, has decided she is better off leaving the party to strike out her own. In the inevitable Twitterization of Idaho elections, Kemp's Twitter page goes by the handle "TheresAChoice."
By running as an independent — and listing education, "entrepreneurial economic development" and sustainable energy as her priorities — Kemp at least implies that those platforms don't fit under the current GOP tent. She implies that the Republican Party is squeezing out moderates who take middle-of-the-road positions.
If she can convince some independent-minded Idahoans to think likewise, this could be troubling for the GOP.

The Idaho Republican Party is certainly disenfranchising a lot of voters. I think it's mostly due to the devout religious part of the party- that is, the LDS cadre and the Christian Coalition types that think, "my way is the only way". And they all act like sheep instead of thoughtful voters.
Shoot, Gov. Otter used to be Libertarian, so maybe Kemp will come back in the folds of the Republican party when she gets reminded of our wonderful "two party system". ;-)
Educated people not wanted
Thanks to the Southern Strategy, lawyers, bankers, doctors, business owners and other educated people have been leaving the Republican party in droves. No wonder, when the party vilifies educated people every chance it gets. Even Republican officeholders with college educations do it! What's going to be left, some angry white dudes with more tattoos than teeth? Those people aren't going to lift a finger or a dime to get Republicans elected; they're just into the posturing.
They are not getting another penny of mine...
as long as Denney is Speaker, Moyle is Majority Leader and Norm Semanko is GOP Chairman. I agree with udapimp about too much influence by religion. I don't need the GOP to watch out for my morals or family values or whether my children should be at home instead of pre-school. Weren't they supposed to be about less government interference in my life?
It's 2009! Who has PENNIES???

Clarification
Kevin,
Thanks for the link. However, a clarification. As I said, I was running for the other seat, not Jana Kemp's. My opponent in 2004 was my friend, Tom LeClaire, not Jana Kemp. She ran for Seat B, I ran for Seat A.

Richert wrong again
Richert has really missed the mark on Kemp. 1. Richert lays out how she voted more in line with her district than her party, then explains that her district then voted her out. What's with that? 2. His whole RINO logic is clueless. Under the current primary system ANYONE can seek the Republican Party nomination. If they can convince enough Democrats, Republicans and anyone else willing to privatively choose to vote in the Republican primary, to vote for them, they are the Party nominee. 3. Just because Kemp chooses a particular set of issues doesn't mean a thing in regard to how a particular political party will address those issues. To suggest otherwise is just silly. The bottom line is Kemp does not have enough support to win a nomination in a political party so she is choosing to be an independent. Just like Mr. Prolife. She will get about the same amount of votes as well.
If they haven't managed to fix that...
Perhaps they need more new employees than McDonalds.

Repubs today are as toxic as a hot intern at a cocktail party.
They will be back as the country swings back to fiscal conservency, if not the country is in ruin. Cal, Jersey, NY, and Mich. and other tax heavy states are a disaster. A ton of votes out there. The 2010 bloodbath in congress will be epic, rivaling 1994. The way back is through small business incentives, smaller gvt, and jobs. Its almost too simple. Oh yeah, I love Jesus, but leave him out of this.
My old GF's daughter married Jesus, he's a swell fella and daddy
