Boise River rafters will see slightly high summer flows Wednesday

ImageThe Boise River will be running slightly higher than it normally runs in the summer, and will still be pretty chilly Wednesday when the tubing and rafting season begins.

The flow is expected to be 1,700 cfs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. The flow is slightly higher than the normal summer flows of 1,000 to 1,500 cfs. The river temperature Monday near the Broadway Bridge was 50 degrees.

The Barber Park Tubing and Raft Rental will open at noon Wednesday. Barber Park is a Ada County park but the concession is operated by Epley's Whitewater Rafting Company.

Barber Park is the start of the traditional Boise River float through town to Ann Morrison Park.(See photo of last season).

Rafters and tubers should be aware that flows higher than 1,500 cfs result in a little higher waves at the diversions, stronger swirlies and a faster current going under brushy banks.

When floating the river, be sure to wear a life jacket and anticipate your moves well ahead of any obstacles, like bridge abutments, brushy banks and islands. It's best to float the river in the center of the river away from the banks. Tricky places to negotiate are the West ParkCenter Bridge, the islands below Broadway Bridge and the islands just above the Ninth Street Bridge.

Because of the cold water, it might be wise to wear a shortie neoprene ski or wakeboarding suit or shortie wetsuit.

Will they all be idiots without protective gear?

Supporting nothing everywhere all day and very well.

Thank you for hollering.

That would be me

I don't generally get a life vest for that trip. I have swam in just about every inch of that river, including Julia Davis and the falls. It might be a bit arrogant, but I feel pretty confident. My kid, on the other hand, is always in a life vest.

Truth is hard to come by
