A backpacking clinic for women is planned at 7 p.m. July 1 at REI, 8300 W. Emerald in Boise. It's just in time for the start of the high-country backpacking season. (By the way, we will have a high-country recreation report for the July 4 weekend in July 2's Idaho Outdoors.)

Back to the clinic. REI expert and avid backpacker Bev Helton will present the essentials of backpacking, camping and backcountry safety. She will talk about choosing a backpack, proper clothing and footwear selection, necessary gear for a successful backcountry trip, and how to plan a weekend or weeklong trip with an emphasis on women-specific gear and planning essentials.
