Password, please. Or, what emoticon best describes crummy HR policy? UPDATED: 10:52 p.m.
UPDATE: Thanks for the heads up, Sharon.
Looks like Bozeman has reversed this policy, according to this broadcast report.
Updated resume? Check.
Glowing reference from high school chemistry teacher? Check.
Twitter password? WTH?
At City Hall in Bozeman, Mont., that's all part of the job screening process. Unbelievable.
Applicants must fill out a form listing "any and all, current personal or business websites, web pages or memberships on any Internet-based chat rooms, social clubs or forums, to include, but not limited to: Facebook, Google, Yahoo, YouTube.com, MySpace, etc.” The form has space where an applicant is supposed to write down passwords.
The, using the term advisedly, logic here is that this enables City Hall to gauge the moral character of an applicant.
Sharon Fisher at NewWest.Net does a fine job of listing the flaws in this ridiculous idea. It violates the applicant's privacy — and the privacy of anyone who is an applicant's Facebook "friend." It asks applicants to violate Internet user agreements by sharing passwords. It suggests a certain social media illiteracy; for instance, City Hall could set up its own Facebook account and ask a job to sign on as a "friend" (thus allowing the city to visit the applicant's Facebook page).
And, of course, it seems like an identity theft problem waiting to happen. But if an applicant relinquishes his or her identity by divulging a password, can that identity really be "stolen?"
Perhaps this is a roundabout and cunning aptitude test. Any applicant foolish enough to share a password is immediately out of the running.
I'm really trying to give Bozeman the benefit of the doubt. Can't you tell?

Boseman Liberals
Does this surprise you KR?
There are more liberals like you (although apparently moderate on this issue) moving into the conservative strongholds like Idaho and Montana.
Boulder CO, Bozeman MT, and Boise ID, it just continues on (To connect two current stories, I'll note Western Watershed Project also has an office in Bozeman- it's the liberal mindset).
This is just another canary in the cave on the erosion of your individual privacy and freedoms. Obviously it wasn't just one person who came up with that crazy Consent Form.
The problem is, THIS and similar things creates a "culture of acceptance".
Each little piece of sand doesn't seem like much but it continues to build and before you know it you have an ugly pile of sand. Privacy, press, religion, gun rights, access to public land, private ownership,,, and people just accept it...
At the current rate, KR, some day you will have to run everything you write past a 'committee' for approval. Then you'll ask yourself, "What happened to the freedom of press", and you'll wonder when the erosion all started.
No, you can't carry a gun, don't say God in school, take your clothes off to board a plane... and give us your passwords to get a job.
You are questioning it now, but you are just one person, KR, the masses don't THINK about such things, they just accept it.
My guess is, with time, you'll accept it too because your liberal writing is one piece of sand.
WTH, Udapimp?
What in the world does this issue have to do with liberals and conservatives, Im a liberal and this Bozeman idea makes me spit mad. No way, theres no way I would do it and it is not only stupid but likely againstthe constitituion.
Theshoes off plane thing - of course stupid and also not political. Don't want to take your guns away, just make some better laws about assault weapons and background checks. Support 2nd amendment. I'm a liberal. Don't make assumptions about what liberal means.
Background checks
You believe owning a gun requires a background check.
Read the Bozeman Consent form- it's just a "background check" form. It clearly states that. So why does it make you spitin mad?
A background check is okay to buy a gun, but not to work for the great city of Bozeman?
***
Blackfeet,
I don't have to make assumptions about what liberal means, YOU just confirmed it.
You believe it's okay to have "background checks" - that's what Bozeman is doing.
And the stupid never stops...
Try fiber, might clear out your brain.
Wow
That's some grade A paranoia, udapimp.
Paranoia...your just being generous.
Ignorance, which leads to the inability to see complex situations in other than a right/wrong, us/them, all/nothing manner is really the problem. Just sheer ignorance.
Yep...
Spot on, poet!
An SRS-type messaging system with a FAIL WHALE and viruses!
That's what you need on your city computers!
Well, it's getting to be a chore having hunches and being right so often...
OH. WELL.

Unbelievable?
From the newwest.net site: "...city attorney Greg Sullivan said this was required to ensure employees will protect the public trust. He also added that no applicant had removed their name from consideration due to the requirement.
****
See, KR, people are used to such intrusions.
Even your readers here, so far have little to say about the invasion of privacy. Instead they fail to connect the dots, use paranoia and ignornance to desribe the opposition to such policies, and even jump on the bandwagon in apparent support of it.
The city attorney (an attorney, a student of the law) even says it's "required" to protect the public trust. Public trust of who?
And yet no applicant withdrew from their application.
There is already a "culture of acceptance" to that which you, KR, think is "unbelievable" as a "foolish" and "ridiculous idea".
The stupid is strong with this one...
No one here advocated it.
Reading for comprehension is apparently a lost art...
Poetry
Oh so Poet, you are against it.
See I couldn't tell by your silence on the topic and I must have been distracted by the arrows you are throwing. I feel better now-- it must have been the fiber I had for lunch- for a bit there I just thought it was too complex of an issue for you to wrap your prose around.
Here is my opinion: The Bozeman policy is as stupid and inane
as your first post.
A rose by any other name.
At least we have an agreement. The policy is "stupid".
That's very thoughtful and insightful of you on such a complex issue. I'm proud of you!
Mother of Pearl!!!
You guys read this on the Moon?

City Leaders
Bozeman's site says the 5 city commissioners are nonpolitical- no party affiliation (kinda like Mayor Bieter I suppose).
Here are their profiles, you can evaluate that accordingly:

Hey Kev -- What's the problem ....
This is right in line with your "bigger gov't knows best" ideology. Aren't we supposed to be happy to turn over more decision making authority to gov't entities? I think we've been told its our patriotic duty! Get your head in the game Kev! Never question authority -- or something like that.
According to your tag, just bomb it.

a commenter to the story
says that the city has now dropped the requirement. I haven't checked this.
thanks for the shout-out!
Roaches
Oops, you shined the light on us and our wrongful ways.
We'll "reverse our policy".
****
When you turn on the lights, roaches run and hide. But they're still there in the cracks and crevices of your home, waiting for you to turn out the lights again.
One roach, then two roaches, then they breed, waiting for you turn out your lights. (Gee, I could make a POEM out of this stuff).
If the Orkin man doesn't sue you ;-)

She called me last night and said she was being watched.
I told her she was an idiot to drop her name and password. Now everybody knows about her revolutionary past. She told me it was only a job application.
So much for the afterglow...

Afterglow? get real.
She's much more of an important of an asset to the underground to be connected to the likes of me. A stautueques redhead like her would be spotted from a mile away. She's probably in Bueneos Aries tonight, posing as a brunette singing in a night club.
