Another Weekend Tip: Get a lift to Bald Mountain
Climbing several thousand feet up Bald Mountain at Sun Valley may not be your cup of Gatorade, but there's still a way to see the fabulous sights from the top of that 9,000-foot mountain.
The chairlifts at Sun Valley Resort start running on Baldy at 9 a.m. Saturday. It will be great for hikers and sightseers. I've been up there in the summer. You can ride to the top and hike around at the top elevations and then ride back down. Or, you can hike back down the cat tracks.
Mountain bikes will not be allowed until July 1 because of an agreement with the U.S. Forest Service so that elk are not disturbed in the area.
Lifts that will run daily will be River Run No. 1 and Lookout Express No. 5. Prices, which will remain the same as in the past, are $15 for adults and $7
for children.
All day rides will be $20 for adults and $10 for children.

Elk
Mtn bikes -no.
Screaming kids running around, chairslifts a going, REI warriors abound, but NO mountain bikes. As soon as that chairlift starts up, any nearby elk will be hoofing it at top speed.
Typical for *federal* management.
I would go if bikes were allowed.

See Zimo, I'm sure if it was state or local control, reason would prevail.
Mountain bikers get into elk cover
Most hikers and families don't leave the top of the mountain and ride the chairlift back down instead of taking the five-mile trail down.
Mountain bikers traverse the trails deep in the timber where the elk and calves are.
I'm a mountain biker and love the Bald Mountain trails. But, I'll wait a few more days to let the elk and young move out of the area at their own pace.
Okay Smokey
Most hikers-- so the 'others' taking the trails "deep in the timber" are okay?
Cows and calves don't mind them, eh??
Traversing the trails deep in the timber... "deep in the the timber" Roger?
C'mon give us a break!
Is that the same timber that was BURNED recently?
Check out this video of mtn biking in black timber in the SV area. Watch closely for some Deep Timber Elk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u68iq325GkEI
Hey, I wonder why it's called "Bald Mtn". Maybe half of it is BALD! Nobody is gonna be all Amazon-style and breaking new trail into "deep timber".
Mtn bikes follow the same trails(cat tracks) the hikers do. And IF elk are still there after the noise begins, it's only cuz elk hide really well in the "deep timber" that's why YOU, Roger, can't ever find any during season.
If the USFS knows there are significant calves in the area they are trying to 'protect', then no body should be hiking or biking in the area.
Additionally, I'm sure the Phantom Hill wolf pack has already cleared out any of the slow elk (and missing Sun Valley children) anyway. Maybe the USFS needs to have a meeting with the USFWS.
Neighorhood wolves, okay.
Bicycles, not so much.

But then, I'm no Forest Service District manager. They know best, right?
Oh yeah speaking of smart District managers, please take some pictures of the burnt timber for us and we can see the recovery to date.

Let's keep in mind someone can ride their bike UP the hill and down the hill in that "deep timber" if they have the energy.

Hey, in an ironic related news bit, Ketchum gets a Polish consulate office- PERFECT timing for Zimowsky to make a trip.

Roger, you & Zimo are spending too much time at the watercooler with Barker and not enough in the field! So here's some ref maps to locate all that "deep timber"

You know, you would convince
You know, you would convince more people to think they way you do if you weren't so acid. Plus, calling out the ethnicity of the Statesman staff is really in bad taste. What are you trying to accomplish by doing that anyway..?
Yup
Yeah, I know. But I'm not here to make friends. If I wanted to do that I would spend my surf time on Facebook and Twitter harassing KR.

In the famous words of David Letterman, "Hey it was a joke". And BTW ethnicity is something to celebrate, not shy away from. I do think it's funny that Idaho gets a Polish consulate office.
You keep forgetting Obama is from ILLINOIS!

Supporting nothing everywhere all day and very well.
Thank you for hollering.
Why are you here?
Its hard to tell.
My mother chose to have me and wouldn't have aborted anyway.
Next stupid question, and I don't care whom it was addressed to.
