The leader of Idaho's celebrity wolf pack killed by a car

The alpha male of the celebrity wolf pack, the Phantom Hill Pack, was hit by a car and killed last weekend the Mountain Express reports.

The pack which this spring wandered through Elkhorn neighborhoods and killed elk in people’s back yards, became one of the state’s best known wolf packs two years ago. It’s movements were followed closely by wolf lovers, Idaho Department of Fish and Game officials and ranchers alike.

The death of the alpha male by auto is the inevitable outcome of wolves that live around humans. Fish and Game tried to haze them away from the Ketchum-Sun Valley area. But the pack, which at set up its territory just north of town, called the Wood River Valley home.

It had deeper ties to the community than many seasonal residents. That its members had become celebrities in a town full of celebrities has become ironic. Ketchum prides itself on leaving its celebrities alone but it could not leave the Phantom Pack alone.

If they did, the wolves would likely have begun eating people’s dogs. They were already considered a threat to the flocks of surrounding ranchers.

An environmental group is spending thousands of dollars to keep the wolves and the sheep separated. Imagine the costs to provide that service statewide to ranchers whose herds and flocks are not threatened by celebrity wolves.

Expect an update on the situation on Entertainment Tonight. We’ll know the Phantom Pack has arrived when it gets an invitation to the Allen and Co. conference at Sun Valley next month along side Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and Tom Hanks.

Defenders of Wolves or Sun Valley

Wolves have been traveling thru Salmon since the recovery started killing dogs and wild game and livestock but now they are in Sun Valley and fish and game and the feds and defenders of wildlife are on the move. You dont suppose all those Billionares who fund enviromental groups are more important than the other parts of the state. I thought thats where their donations were to go I guess sunvalley is not part of the recovery area or part of the wild anymore. Cant wait to see pictures of a wolf pack chasing Tom Hanks jet down the runway.Trap them and drop them off at Carol Kings if she will unlock her gate.

So sad

Butch didn't get to kill the first wolf.
Let me guess, it was a KIA car that did the Killed in action?

Somebosy here always swore they'd...and they missed the chance?

Just as well.

Goodnight, James Dean.

Celebrity Pack

milburnschmidt - the wolves have been running around in rural towns on the west side of the Frank too. You tell a familiar story. The wolves are habituated and not afraid of people. I guess only the celebrity pack makes the news when they kill an elk in someones yard. Folks have lost several horses and dogs the last few years in this area. Hikers have been stalked, campers surrounded by sniffing and howling at night. Not a word of that makes the news.

Someone tell Ms. Stone that "clapping your hands" doesn't make Mr. Wolf "go away" and let go of your dog.

Don't get me wrong, I believe wolves belong in the wilderness - just NOT in our towns.
