Bleymaier will pursue 'guarantee' games to boost budget

As Boise State tries to make up for its rising costs and decreasing state support, athletic director Gene Bleymaier plans to become more aggressive in pursuing the big-money “guarantee” road games that he has mostly avoided in recent years.
Bleymaier has openings for such a game in 2010 and 2011. The Broncos already have six home games in 2010 and seven in 2011. Bleymaier said he is looking at options for a 2010 guarantee game.
A guarantee game likely would take Boise State to the central or eastern portion of the country. Those games are hard to find in the Pac-10, Bleymaier said.
“Right now, I’d go where I can make the most money,” he said. “If I can play at home and make that much money, then I’m going to play at home. But it’s difficult to make that much money in our stadium size. … I’ve tried to avoid those (guarantee games). Now they’re much more of a reality going forward.”
In recent years, the Broncos have cashed checks from Washington (2007), Georgia (2005), Arkansas (2002) and South Carolina (2001).
The change to Bleymaier’s scheduling philosophy is just one of several issues we’ll address related to the Broncos’ budget in Wednesday’s edition of the Idaho Statesman.

Just leave it alone, Gene. The collection of old BSU helmets...
in the hall of fame I saw on 7 means more than buying our way to--what?
So do we schedule Florida State or USC or Notre Dame just to say we played them?
Does that raise our stature or esteem?
I don't know where all the armchair quarterbacks came in but I thought the old days weren't THAT awful. We looked forward to playing ISU AND U of I, then Weber State, ecetera. We had fun.
Was it the blue turf notion that cursed it? Rip it out, go on, see. Whatever. I remember BSU when the students had more comraderie in it. It was THEIR game, like it was in high school.
Whatever you did with our team, Gene was the same thing that happened to your college radio stations. Mushed and melonballed like those "HULU" alien folks waiting for dinner.
Who cares about ESPN? Cable weasels.

Bravooooooooo
Thank you Gene! Can't wait to see who we land!
Finally!!!
We're not trying to schedule teams like Florida, USC, and Notre Dame just to say we played them. This is Boise States chance to legitimize the program it has grown into over the last decade. This is a good thing.
It's about time Gene. The team deserves to play better talent and the fans deserves to watch it.
I know the basketball teams isn't as good as football but it would be nice if Gene would schedule some better teams for baskeball team too.
Money Games
Absolutely - Gene should be looking for money games. He should have been doing this before now. How about Notre Dame? Maybe an Oklahoma re-match. Maybe Miami or Florida State or Texas. It could open up some recruiting possibilities too.
Unfortunate
It's unfortunate that BSU's decision to start playing more serious competition is ultimately going to be based on money and not a desire to play the best and prove themselves. It'll make it kind of hard to say, post-big game victory-that BSU wanted to prove themselves, when the truth will actually be that BSU needed some dough and happened to win the game along the way.
Why are you here CCD?
Your post makes sense to nobody but bitter Vandal fans. Using your same line of reasoning, UI shouldn't need to schedule the big-name teams (I enjoyed rooting for them against USC in 2007 btw) because everyone is stiff competition to them. That leaves one thing - they need the money. Maybe that's what college football programs need to improve (a concept evidently lost on our friends up north).
I am an all-Idaho sports fan. But honestly, Vandal fans have a antagonism towards everything Bronco that makes me shake my head and giggle. UI is a fine institution, but too much alcohol must affect a person's ability to reason.
Ontario here, saying BE QUIET!

You can easily say the exact
You can easily say the exact same thing about bronco fans. BTW...I love how every article has at least one post about alcohol. I'm sure the people were there...
C'mon, it happens at almost every university....
When I first read this....
I thought the "guarantee" was for a "win". I thought "Don't schedule more cupcakes!". But, I'm glad I was wrong. We should be scheduling teams from the following conferences: Pac-10, MWC, ACC, Big East, C-USA, and Sunbelt. There are plenty of quality teams from those divisions that can be played. Honestly, I expect at least 3 QUALITY non-WAC opponents (2 of which should be from BCS conferences). Of course, my expectations are higher than most.
I would stay away from the Big 12 and SEC, though. The Broncos are not ready for those conferences, yet. I want to play a team that we actually have a chance of beating. I don't want a cupcake, but I also dont want a "yeah, right" game either. Georgia? Florida? Texas? Oklahoma? We have no chance beat them at this time. We pulled off the victory against Oklahoma once, but only because they underestimated us. We wont get away with that a second time.
Kind of glib
Bleymeier actually makes a good point about Bronco Stadium. It's too small to compel a lot of major programs to take a home-and-home with the Broncos.
And I know I'm in the minority on this point, but I don't think the blue turf helps, either.
Well...
I've said before that the university should have spent the Fiesta Bowl money on expanding the stadium seats. Instead, they spent it on that stupid-looking Sky Club.
Even if you build the other side up, nobody will be happy...
The stadium is landlocked unless you want to move the location way far off. The STADIUM is also not the PLAYERS.
The PLAYERS are the TEAM. As long as they play, we have a team.
That's a major point right there.

Didn't they decide to limit/cut off Hawaii trip for the band?
Or a bowl game or something. Shows where the game ends and the stupid begins.

Its about time.
Now I know I am not the only one that thought it was funny that it took a financial crisis for BSU to schedule some tougher OOC games. When are we ever going to hear that BSU plays one of the tougher non conference schedules in the country? Most likely never, but it is getting old hearing year in and year out just how cupcake BSU's OOC schedule is.
Its about time BSU ordered some fries with their weak sauce.
WE HAVE A WINNAH!

Don't get let your eyes get too big
There won't be a lot of Floridas, Texases, or Ohio States in those "money games." There may occaisionally be a big-timer like that, but expect more games along the lines of Texas A&M or Mississippi. But hey, after years of Wyoming, Cal-Davis, and Bowling Green, I'd gladly take one mid-level Big 12 or ACC team per year.
Bronco "Nation"
Not all Bronco fans live in Boise. I relish opportunities to watch live Bronco games when they travel east.
I think there are going to
I think there are going to be a lot of disappointed donkeys when they see what happens when you play real teams. An 0-12 Washington could beat you. Oregon definitely will. BSU isn't the caliber of team that all the fans envision it to be. Yes you look good against UI and Weber state, but you couldn't even take TCU? Good luck with USC. They need a good warm up. If by chance gene can borrow someone's cajones and accidentally schedules USC, I'll bet any donkey that the BSU USC final spread would be more than the USC UI spread. 38-10 was our final...
I'll take that bet, but only
I'll take that bet, but only if BSU gets to play the same team as your Vandals (meaning 3rd and 4th stringers). I agree, there are a lot of Bronco (not donkey) fans that are over confident, but I think you Vandals also may under estimate them as well. I for one will not be disappointed no matter what. I'm just excited to see them play some better teams. They can't expect to improve as a program without playing some tougher teams, even if they have to take a few lumps along the way. How will they know where they really need to improve if they don't test themselves. Oh, and btw TCU was a very good team that played a great game and losing to them by a point or two was nothing to be ashamed of. I'm certain the spread against UI would have been much larger.
Maybe he's just going to fix them or something. King Nothing.
