Athlon ranks Boise State No. 12

Athlon Sports announced Wednesday that Boise State will be ranked No. 12 in its preseason magazines. Read the announcement here.

The magazines go on sale June 2. One version features Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore on the cover. Check it out here.

For what it's worth, Athlon has been ranked as the most accurate preseason magazine over the past three seasons.

"Boise State has some holes to fill, but the return of quarterback Kellen Moore and three starters on the offensive line gives us every reason to believe the offense will be explosive once again," Athlon Sports managing editor Mitch Light said in a press release. "The most underrated part of this program has been its defense; last year, the Broncos only gave up more than 17 points twice. If the defense can approach that level once again, Boise State should be in the hunt for another BCS bowl."

Athlon also named cornerback Kyle Wilson a third-team All-American.

A third team all-american??

A third team all-american?? Didn't the mistakesman say he was a 1st round draft pick? hahahaha.

Given that...

...there are 25 players per All-American team (1st, 2nd, 3rd), and around 1/3 of those are not Seniors, that means that there are roughly 50 Seniors on the 3 teams. Given that there are 32 picks per round, yes, that equates to a 1st or 2nd round draft pick. Keep in mind, also, that not everyone who makes All-American will be drafted (at all), and not everyone who gets drafted in the first two rounds makes an All-American list.

Dumb Vandal

Third team means the top 5 or 6 cornerbacks in the country. Learn simple math Vandal boy.

he will

COTvandal-He will be a first round draft pick if he continues to play like he did last year. He runs a sub 4.4 40 yard dash and is considered to be a solid corner and also a great punt returner. Sounds like he's also gonna get some reps at receiver too. When BSU plays UofI this year just pay attention to the guy picking off your qb about 2-3 times that game. That'll be him...

CotVandal

Any idea where your Vandals are ranked this year.. Did they make last place again?

Snubbed Again

12 - give me a break. I hope the team takes offense to this and proves we are a top 5 team.

vANALCOT

It wasn't the Statesman....it was USA Today that said it and the Statesman re-printed it.

Like most vANALS, you come with half the story and virtually zero credibility.

JOKE

Pre-season rankings mean nothing. Does anyone really believe BSU is better than all but 11 teams? NO WAY. Once again, BSU's schedule is a joke, in conference and out. That's the only reason they're ranked.

Joke-Agree

I agree w/ gkmaximus. WAC is the only reason BSU is ranked #12. Put them in a more elite conference and they are just a middle of the conference team at best. BSU would be lucky to win half their games in the Pac-10. Save the, "We beat Oregon and OSU" argument. Playing a higher caliber team once a year versus week in and week out are two entirely different animal's.

You forgot OU

You forgot OU

Give them

a couple of years with the additional money and better recruits that would come with a better conference and see what happens. Saying they would be middle of the conference is pure speculation. It's also what was said when they moved to the Big Sky, Big West and WAC conferences. How'd that work out?

By the way, it's "animals" - no apostrophe.

3rd Team All American?

Don't forget Kyle Wilson already is a 2nd team All American on the S.I. and Sporting News 2008 All American teams. The talent is there, no question.

But, Fiesta Bowl aside, there's still some work to do before people accept BSU as a legit BCS Bowl contender while playing a WAC schedule.

Louisville - Loss
Boston College - Loss
Oklahoma - Win
East Carolina - Loss
TCU - Loss

True, but

Louisville - lost by 4 to #9 team in the country, went down to the final play
BC - lost by 6 to #21 team in the country, went down to the final play
ECU - lost by 3 on last play of the game
TCU - lost by one to #7 team in the country, went down to the final play.

It's not like they haven't been competitive in these games. One play in any of the four losses - or the one win - and the outcome would have been different. Had they been blown out in these bowl games (a la Zabransky's meltdown at Georgia) then you would have a legitimate argument.

Agree

As in true blue spirit BSU fought all the way to the end on all games. Win or lose all those games were exciting till the last seconds. Some games were hard to stomach and left an ache in my heart for those guys on the field.
L-Bowl: I watched the cardinals beat Boise while drinking at Old Chicago downtown Boise then took off to SunValley to celebrate new years.
Hu-Bowl: In the stands as Boise almost came from behind against the eagles till Z threw that pick at the goal line then was booed when he received the MVP award. I wasn't booing.
Ha-Bowl: Watched the Pirates beat Boise while in Corvallis seeing my family for the holidays hearing my grandpa tell me those Boise boys sure don't stand a chance against eastern kids.
F-Bowl: Reveled in the Sooner victory after visiting my wife's relatives in Alabama hearing them tell me Boise doesn't stand a chance against the big boys. If I didn't spend the money to go to Ala. I would have been at that game. That would've been a road trip to remember. Celebrate new years in Vegas with a cousin, see BSU beat the Sooners and drive home with enough adrenalin that my hangover would seem like a trophy Elk on opening day.
P- Bowl: Spent the day in beautiful McCall boarding the slopes to get rid of some calories before the TCU game which was replenished with a six pack of Black Butte. The game left me sick, no it wasn't the beer and brats, it was the single point loss that made me upchuck.
Here's to another great season and more great memories of BSU football.

Hey! Nobody cares about football in the summer!

If they did it would be played in INDOOR STADIUMS...

Oh crap. I'll get back to you on that.

Question

Who the Hell is Athlon? I looked at the page and seriously who cares. It is like being ranked by Eastbay.com. Pre-Season Ranks mean nothing anyway.

Just a small point on that: They moved to the Wac and still have a Strength of schedule in the 100's so that move is not a big deal at all. If they stayed in the Sunbelt their strength of schedule would not be that much worse if at all. Also ask yourself this... how many college kids actually would want to go to Boise for their college experience, especially if they could pick a school in a bigger city, better facilities and a better chance of playing pro ball. No matter what conference bsu is in they will always have a very hard time getting big time players here, which is sad and it is the truth.

I'm angry that they think we are RANK.

Another Small Point

In response the the post above titled "Question," I have another question for you.

You say: "...how many college kids actually would want to go to Boise for their college experience, especially if they could pick a school in a bigger city."

Well, here's my question for you: Ever been to Norman, Oklahoma? How 'bout Morgantown, West Virginia? I could throw in just about every single town in the Big 12 (excepting Austin) too, but you get my point. The size and vibrancy of the city have nothing to do with its athletic programs. BSU has a lot of problems to deal with, you're right; but, the city of Boise is not one of them.

Boise City is HIP, DAD! It jives, it thrives, so ALIVE!

Don't forget it or I'll tell you again.

RE: Another Small Point

I have not been to those towns, and no doubt the towns may be small. However they do have a true college campus not a bunch of strip malls strung together with a bsu sign on them (Might be a bit harsh :-) ) I would suggest that with those schools you are right the size and vibrancy of the city does not have anything to do with the athletic programs, they are established and have been for a very long time, however for bsu it has a lot to do with it. I live in Boise, and love it, however it is not the town for a college experience. There is truly something special about a college town. The above mentioned schools have college towns and that is why the experience in those towns will be and is different. I went to school in a small town with a large school and the experience was awesome because it was a college town. You may agree with me that Boise is not a college town and does not have a college setting. When ever I am on the bsu campus for any type of game the experience that I have is the same as a Community College. Yes I know it was at one time, and I do not care. The point is that bsu will continue to have a very hard time moving forward with athletics because they are held back by the facilities and yes even the town its self. That is my humble opinion.

Ranking

We are never going to be taken seriously as an NCAA division one sports team as long as we play on that stupid blue turf. People in Boise think the turf is cute. It makes us look like a joke! Perception means a lot and that stuff hurts our image.

The turf has got to go if we are too earn the respect of the rest of the college football fraternity brothers. I'd like to know what idiot made the decision to use a gimmick to get attention. Whom ever it was succeeded in getting the attention but now its just a laughable distraction to what is otherwise a respectable football program.

Too bad the big shoots at BSU have not recognized this. They're so wrapped up in bleeding blue they don't see the way we look to the rest of the schools. Smurf-turf! Even my 6 year old laughs at it!

If you like the new Uni's I will laugh at You!

BSU has earmed its place

During the past five or ten years Boise State has earned a place in the College Football world. Your victory over Oregon last year is certainly one to be proud of, non-conference foes simply don't win in Autzen Stadium....yours was only the second since Mike Bellotti became head coach. And, of course, the victory over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl was huge.

But, to be honest, I don't think the Broncs could handle the same type of schedule played by either OU or UO. Would you honestly want to play a schedule full of Texas, Okie State, Missouri, Nebraska or USC, UCLA, California, Arizona State? No? I didn't think so. And more honesty: BSU wouldn't even be considered for membership in either the Big-XII or PAC-10,especially the PAC-10.

There's a lot more to membership in a BCS conference than a competetive football team. Does BSU qualify as a 'Research University'? Does BSU have a Law School, Medical School or Dental School? Does BSU award PhDs? Those qualifications are met by all PAC-10 schools and I'm pretty sure by all the Big-XII schools. Plus, conference members are expected to field competetive teams in at least 18 sports, divided between men and women.

It has taken Oregon about twenty years to become a legitimate and consistent top-25 team and gain the national respect that comes with it. Oregon's athletic budget is over $65million and the Athletic Department is completely self-sufficient, IOW no state funds, they actually make money for the University.

We Duck fans can realistically begin every season thinking this might be the year we get a crystal football; we have the resources (now) to recruit nationwide and Oregon can play with anyone in the country from any conference in any game and their schedule reflects it. After playing you guys in Boise, the Ducks play Purdue (from the Big-10/11) and Utah before playing every other team in the PAC-10. Would any BSU fan with any sense at all want to swap schedules? BSU should concentrate on dominating the WAC, winning some high-profile OOC games and then let the chips fall where they may. You will get your share of good bowl games, everybody loves the underdog.

But remember this; the Broncos have made a name for themselves --the Smurf Turf might even have something to do with that:)-- And they certainly aren't going to sneak up on anyone any more. I know for a fact that the Ducks have tons of respect for them and are working really hard this summer getting ready for their trip to Boise, they know that BSU is a damned good team and there is a certain 'revenge' factor. The winner of the game will be firmly planted in the top-10 and will have a leg up on any post-season hopes.

I'm looking forward to the game, I like Boise---it reminds me a lot of Portland thirty or forty years ago and it seems to be controlling its growth in a very Portland-like manner. So good luck to the Broncs when the Ducks come to town, I think they're gonna need it. Beware of angry Ducks.

What does curriculum have to do with a playoff series???

If fact, what does the NCAA have to do with that either?

The NCAA doesn't dictate the nature of ranking or post season play other than insuring fair play and the health and eligibility of the participants.

Furthermore, no requirements are incumbent on any participating school on what types of programs are offered, outside of federal requirements such as Title IX (and others). Academic fairness and honesty are paramount by all means and the NCAA, being the representative of the member schools as a regulatory body and a protector of post-secondary education as a consequence and companion to the promotion of sport, does not make distinctions such as you suggest to qualify such matters in general.

An education in any form, when effective to the students, is a correct and proper education. Gentrifying and McDonaldizing are not useful comparison.

This writer suggests handily that Eugene is 1-2 days drive from Boise (if you are indeed there) and the opportunity to return for further education, or even to pursue an online education abound for you at this time.

Giving is gracious, getting is golden. Au revoir, mon ami.
